Dear Parents & Guardians,

Hard to believe it is already December. We have lots to celebrate

as we continue to provide not only academic experiences but outside the

classroom educational experiences. We partner with community resources

and grant opportunities:

o Kamehameha Schools supports our Hawaiian Language Program. In addition, our Hawaiian students attend the

extracurricular programs supported by Kamehameha Schools which are held at other locations. We work with

Kamehameha in their efforts to support all students island wide.

o Scientists from University of Hawai`i are partnering with classes of Ms. Waterman’s to expose students to underwater

technology; UH professors of Biology and Marine Science also invited Kaua`i High to be one of 5 high schools state

wide to continue this outreach as part of a new grant application.

o Two teachers recently became Google Level 1 certified after extensive coursework and testing (Leina Kealoha and

Heather Morgado); Our Tech integration Teacher-leader, Elena Kealoha, is already Google Level 2 certified.

o Our Computer Science program has teachers expanding their horizons. Mrs. Aiwohi accepted into an Artificial

Intelligence Explorations Cohort in partnership with General Motors to promote AI. More training planned for the

summer 2019 with UH Maui and Code.org organizations partnership opportunities.

quarter

Greetings Kaua`i High School families and

community,

The school year is progressing rapidly and we are

proud of the student’s hard work thus far. As the

first semester winds down, please encourage

students to be diligent in obtaining the skills and

dispositions for success!

We ask that you continue the conversation about

appropriate use of technology. Teachers utilize a

variety of strategies to limit the use of cell phones

in the classroom. If a cell phone is turned in to the

office, it will be returned to the student the first

time but must be picked up by a parent on the

second offense.

E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used

form of tobacco among teens and incidents

involving e-cigarettes at Kaua`i High are increasing.

Use and/or possession of e-cigarettes are illegal in

Hawai`i for anyone under the age of 21. Vape

mods and pens are also used to inhale derivatives

of marijuana. This is dangerous and is a felony

offense in Hawai`i. We encourage you to educate

yourself and your teen about the dangers of these

products.

Attendance rate and punctuality play a significant

role in academic success. If a student is not

present for at least half of a class period, they will

be marked absent (this is a state rule). During the

school day students are expected to be in their

assigned class and can be arrested for truancy

when out of class without permission. This is a

safety issue that we take seriously at Kaua`i High

and we appreciate your support.

Happy Holidays!
