ARTISTS’ FELLOWSHIP, INC. 47 Fifth Avenue • New York, NY 10003 Dear Friends and Colleagues, As we embark on our 153rd year of the Artists' Fellowship, I am honored to take the reins from our beloved former President, Babette Bloch, who after eight years of service in this capacity, has decided to step down. We owe a tremendous debt to Babette for her leadership and uncompromised vision that has led the Fellowship to the strongest point in its remarkable history. Fortunately for us, she will remain on the board as a trustee and advisor continuing her family's enduring support. As my tenure begins as President, I am delighted to report that our endowment continues to maintain strength with the total value of our investments up in the last fiscal year thanks to our devoted 2009-honored treasurer Pamela Singleton. Under her careful stewardship Pam keeps us within the guidelines; a particularly difficult feat during these recessionary times. We want to thank Babette for orchestrating a much-needed renovation of our office space at the Salmagundi Club. With the help of Pam Singleton, Naomi Campbell and craftsman extraordinaire James Von Ottenritter, we now have a beautiful and functional office. Responding to a barrage of requests each month, I want to thank our incomparable board of trustees for their rectitude and compassion in navigating through these meetings. In addition, I personally appreciate their support and guidance as well as their insights to maintain the strength of the Fellowship. This past year the Fellowship has benefited from the generosity of Michael Gormley, editor of American Artist/Artist Daily, who arranged for Nelson Shanks to demonstrate at the National Arts Club in conjunction with the Weekend with the Masters in New York City. Member Dianne Bernhard was the subject with the proceeds benefiting the Fellowship. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for the generosity of spirit exhibited by these individuals. Last year we helped 70 artists during times of crisis by providing them with aid. As we look towards the future, our mission remains steadfast as a place for artists to turn in times of emergency or hardship. In light of this, I am often amazed by how few artists know about the good work that we do. We rely on you to maintain your membership and help us reach our goal of continuing to spread the word among friends and colleagues about the importance of supporting the Fellowship. I personally urge each and every one of you to bring in one new member this year by downloading a membership application www.artistsfellowship.org and sending it to a friend. Just as important if you have an artist friend in need, please direct them to us; we are here to serve our community of artists. Finally, please come and help us celebrate as we will honor Knox Martin and Storm King Art Center at the Annual Awards Dinner at the Manhattan Penthouse on October 24th, 2012. newsletterThe Artists’ Fellowship honors one of the world’s most celebrated open-

air sculpture parks, Storm King Art Center, at our October 24, 2012Annual Awards Dinner. The Storm King Art Center is arguably the

godfather of the modern sculpture park movement. As the second oldestAmerican sculpture park (after Brookgreen Gardens), Storm King was the firstto provide a pastoral landscape to view important post-war American sculpture.

Storm King was founded by the late Ralph E. Ogden and H. Peter Stern.Established first to display Hudson River School painting, by 1961 the founderswere committed to modern sculpture. A major 1966 purchase from the estate ofsculptor David Smith was followed by acquisition of the works of other modernmasters including Alexander Calder, Mark di Suvero, Henry Moore, LouiseNevelson, and Isamu Noguchi. Storm King’s proximity to New York City madeit a point of destination for the sculpture world’s cognoscenti, eventually helpingto spawn public and private sculpture gardens around the globe.

The Fellowship will be pleased to welcome H. Peter Stern’s son, John P.Stern, who served as a long-time trustee of Storm King, and has been Presidentand CEO of Storm King Art Center since 2008. He oversees all aspects of theArt Center, with a focus on ensuring its vital future.

Also honored will be David R. Collens, who joined Storm King Art Centeras curator in 1974, and has served as Director and Curator since 1976. In thiscapacity he is responsible for Storm King’s permanent collection of more than100 works, in addition to coordinating the maintenance of its natural landscape. He plans and manages the installation of sculpture, organizes special exhibitions, and supervises sculpture conservation. Much of his work entails working closelywith artists and their representatives.

Storm King has always been uniquely concerned with how sculpture inter-acts with the sculpture park’s magnificent landscapes. The collection is sited on500 fabulous acres with pristine panoramic views throughout.

Legendary Director of the National Gallery and long time board member ofStorm King, J. CarterBrown paid Storm Kingthe ultimate compli-ment some years ago.According to Brown,“There is no questionthat among sculptureparks of the world,Storm King is king.”

For nearly 60 years, Knox Martin hasproduced a singular visual languagewith roots in both the old Masters and

that great upheaval in mid-20th-centuryAmerican Art known as Abstract Expressionism.

Martin came of age as an artist in the 1950’s, alongside some of theleading lights of that era, such a Jackson Pollock and Willem deKooning. But he has at intervals in his career wrestled with the ghostsof the Western tradition, most recently in a series of unframed draw-ings called “Caprichos” in honor of the fever-dream etchings of Goya.

A geometric abstractionist, Knox Martin has been active in NewYork City notably at the forefront of the muralist movement, including a huge 1970 mural painted on the wall of the BayviewCorrectional Facility on West 19th Street.

Martin’s work has been in exhibitions in the last decade at theJanos Gat Gallery, ACA Galleries, National Academy of Design, ArtStudents’ League, Woodward Gallery and Salander-O’Reilly Galleriesin New York.

Martin taught at Yale Graduate School of the Arts, first as visitingcritic in art and then as Professor of Art. He also taught at New YorkUniversity, the University of Minnesota, and the International Schoolof Art in Umbria, Italy.

According to Ira Goldberg, the Executive Director of the ArtStudents League and one of our AF Trustees, “Knox Martin is one ofour most esteemed teachers we have. He’s taught at the league for 40

years and continues tooffer students greatincites through hisMaster Classes.”

Knox comes froma long tradition ofgreat teachers. Histeacher Will Barnetwas also a recipient ofthis medal in 1978 andis on our board ofAdvisors.

Guests were led into the magical dining areafor the delicious dinner with breathtaking viewsof the city. President Babette Bloch spoke to theaudience of 175 members, colleagues andfriends to once again share the mission of theArtists’ Fellowship and thanked everyone fortheir support. Ira Goldberg spoke of the hard-ship encountered by the artists who seek aid cit-ing medical issues, fires, eviction and the feelingof “swimming upstream alone” while encourag-

ing the crowd to offer continued supportthrough their auction purchases. Ira also readpoignant excerpts from aid recipients’ thank youletters sent to the board which acknowledgedthe hope as well as credibility the aid provided.

The awards presented were to honor thesculptor Stanley Bleifeld with the BenjaminWest Clinedinst Award and The StobartFoundation and John Stobart, its founder, withthe Gari Melchers Memorial Award. Havingspoken to Bleifeld earlier in the year, Babetteconveyed his delight in this recognition from hiscolleagues. Sadly, Bleifeld passed away prior tothe awards dinner. In attendance was hiswidow, Naomi (Nicky) Bleifeld, who graciously

accepted the award on his behalf. StanleyBleifeld was President of the National SculptureSociety for three years and remained connectedfor 24 years. Speaking about her experience asthe Director of the National Sculpture Society,Gwen Pier recalled a recurring theme in “howmany regarded Bleifeld as their best friend.”Nicky shared how honored she felt to receivethis award for her husband and referred to himas “a generous fountain of knowledge.” Shespoke of Bleifeld as someone who “opened upnew worlds and possibilities” for the work of hismany students and had enriched their lives. Hisworks were described as “approachable, veryhuman” which led his good friend BurtSilverman to say that Bleifeld’s “strength in hishumanity speaks to his humanity.”

John Stobart our other honoree, was intro-duced by Don Demers. In attendance wasAlastair Dacey, a beneficiary of a StobartFoundation grant, who eloquently discussed hisexperience while conveying his gratitude toStobart. Stobart acknowledged being over-whelmed by the award and shared with theaudience his tumultuous background; a less-than illustrious academic career followed bynine years of schooling at the Royal Academy ofArt in London. Although he was never pre-

pared to be an entrepeneur, his career beganwhen he arrived in New York in 1970. Stobartachieved tremendous success with the KennedyGallery and later sold prints of his paintingsthat were acquired by private collectors.

Stobart’s astonishment in his success moti-vated him to form the Stobart Foundation tohelp students at the critical time between leav-ing art school and launching their careers.

The evening sparkled with many illustriousguests including past honorees, advisors andfriends including Will and Elena Barnet,Everett Raymond and Peggy Kinstler, MarcMellon, Dianne and Van Bernhard, DanielGreene, Nelson Shanks and Michael Gormley. We also wish to extend our thanks to boardmember Ira Goldberg for soliciting the artistswho donated their work and organizing thatportion of the event. Special thanks to EdithRae Brown, dinner chairwoman, who organizedand coordinated the dinner along with NaomiCampbell, our administratve director. We wantto express a heartfelt thank our to our verygenerous donors Jack Richeson & Company,Capital Bank, Frank and Rita Castagna and ananonymous donor for their sponsorship of theevent. The silent auction and donations fromguests will go towards the Fellowship endow-ment.

Our next awards dinner will be held onOctober 24, 2012 at the Manhattan Penthousewhere we will honor Knox Martin and StormKing Art Center. Please join us for anotherspectacular evening and continue your supportfor our community of artists.

Another delightful evening of celebration for the Artists’ Fellowship, Inc.occurred at the Manhattan Penthouse in September in New York City.Festively attired guests arrived to enjoy a lavish cocktail hour

punctuated by a silent auction of paintings and prints donated by renownedartists. Those who arrived early had the chance to choose from a diverse arrayof artwork, a rare opportunity indeed. We are very grateful to the artists who sograciously donated their work to benefit the endowment: Perry Alley, WillBarnet, Robert Baxter, Timothy Clark, Mary Beth McKenzie, Sharon Sprung,John Stobart, Gary Sussman, Costa Vavagiakis and John Varriano.
