Aiming High, Achieving Together Bentworth Road, London W12 7AJ T: 020 8743 2527 Friday 18 th October 2019 A Message from the Head of School It has been such a celebratory week at Ark Bentworth. Our week began with our religious education day and the children learnt about Hinduism (see images on this page). Sama in Year 1 shared information about Diwali and her parents came in to talk to the pupils. Sama’s dad gave the pupils lots of information about Hinduism and answered all of their questions. Ms Peerwani and Shreya in Year 6 showed the children how dandiya sticks are used and Mr Wilson shared his shrine that he uses at home. Thank you to Sama, her parents, Shreya, Ms Peerwani and Mr Wilson! Our next religious education day will be in December and we will be learning about Christianity. I do hope some of our Christian pupils and parents will be willing to come in and share their beliefs and customs. I would like to thank all of the parents, carers and families who came into school this week for our class showcases. We packed into the classrooms to hear about the children’s learning and I do hope you enjoyed it as much as me. It is hard to believe just how much the children have learnt in only a month and a half and I know it meant a lot to them to be able to share it with you. During assembly today we presented badges to our eco committee and our house captains. I feel excited about working closely with them over the next year to improve our school and make a difference in our local community, Finally, I would like to wish Miss Milne the best (see image on this page). Her last day at Ark Bentworth is today and she will be missed. Miss Milne is going to pursue her singing career and I am sure you join with me in wishing her every success. Miss Milne has asked for me to share the following words: A huge thank you to the teachers, parents and children who create the amazing Ark Bentworth community. I have loved every moment of working with the children. This school, and the children in this school, continue to put a smile on my face. Ark Bentworth holds a very special place in my heart and I will keep in touch. I wish you a happy, enjoyable and safe half term break and want to remind you that school resumes on Tuesday 29 th October 2019. With kindest regards Karinne Faddy Attendance Our whole school attendance this week was 96.68% The classes with the highest attendance were Year 6 with 98.97% Year 5 with 98.67% Reception with 98.1% Our 100% attendance winners are Genevieve Francis Chloe Cross

Spooky Circuits - Family Workshop

You will explore the amazing conductive powers of play dough and learn about electrical currents. By using

different types of dough, you will be able to make and take an amazing 3D model that can light up and conduct

electricity. Aimed at 5 – 11 years old.

When: Monday 21st October Slots: 11.00, 12.00 and 14.00.

Make a Skeleton - Family Workshop

You will explore anatomy and skeletons through live demonstrations before making your own model skeleton

to take home. You’ll discover how we use bones to move around and then consider how you might engineer

these different features by making and taking home a model skeleton. Aimed at 7 – 13 year olds.

When: Tuesday 22nd October Slots: 11.00, 12.00 and 14.00.

Halloween Science Show

Join us as we explore spooky science in our first ever Halloween show that will explore a range of science areas

through fun and interactive demonstrations. In this exciting science show at The Invention Rooms, you’ll see

exploding pumpkins, watch fire change colour, hear the story behind the inspiration for Frankenstein and find

out how famous scientist Alessandro Volta first invented the battery. Aimed at 7 – 13 year olds.

When: Tuesday 22nd October Slots: 16.45 – 18.00

Curious Catalysts

From the food we eat to the air we breathe, we all rely on chemical reactions, but some of these reactions need

a helping hand. This is where our researchers look to catalysts, materials that help reactions happen!

In this workshop you will learn about the basics of chemical bonds through some exciting demonstrations

delivered by Imperial researcher Richard Kong, before learning more about Imperial’s work developing new

catalysts and why they are so important. After picking the chemical reaction of your choice (perhaps turning

carbon dioxide into diamonds or breaking down plastic) you will learn about the features of catalysts by

making a catalyst monster. At the end of the workshop, we will look at real catalysts on the large screen and

compare them to our own. Aimed at 7 – 13 year olds.

When: Friday 25th October Slots: 14.00 – 16.00

Writing competition

Pearson Schools are running an international writing competition, ‘My Twist on a Tale’.

Please support your child to write a fairy tale or folk story reimagined as they put a modern

day twist on tales of old and create their own story to reflect their personal interests,

background and experiences.

Your child’s story can celebrate a diverse and modern-day Britain. Whether it is Cinderella

meeting her not-so-evil stepmother, magical smartphones or classroom kingdoms. They

could even create a fable or fairy tale of their very own.

The winners will see their works published as a collection of short stories for all to read. We

hope everyone who takes part enjoys finding their voice, expressing themselves freely and

having fun along the way!

Let’s get writing! The deadline is Tuesday 29th November 2019, not October as

stated in the letter home! Make sure that you stick within 750 words in total. Please

hand the story in to your class teacher.
