*MAY ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT
Saturday, May 11th, *6:00 pm in the Cantina
“Marriage Italian Style”
Marcello Mastroianni co-stars as the irrepressibly carnal businessman Domenico, who discovers Loren's Filumena as a young prostitute and keeps her as his mistress and confidante. When he
chooses to marry a young cashier instead of her, Filumena is furious, and resorts to a series of wild and hilarious ruses to win back his hand. One of the most famous, and funniest, Italian comedies of all time, MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE received nominations for Best Foreign Language Film, and
Best Actress for Sophia Loren, at the Academy Awards.
Movie is subtitled in English. Donations accepted to defray cost of DVDs.
*Please note that we’ll be showing the movie in the DaVinci Room in Blu-Ray High Definition. We’ll be serving complimentary homemade pizza and salad and desserts prior to the movie.
This will the last movie until after the summer season. Look for some alternate entertainment presentations in future Newsletters.

Everything you need to know about the Sanremo Music Festival, Italy's answer to Eurovision
Sanremo is a key date in Italy's cultural calendar.
The March and April issues of the Newsletter provided us with some interesting facts about the Sanremo Music Festival. Here are two more:
...And it's responsible for 'Volare'
Over the years, the Sanremo Festival has catapulted plenty of singers to international fame, including Andrea Bocelli and Laura Pausini. But perhaps the most famous product of the festival is 'Volare', the 1958 winner and probably the best-known Italian song in the globe. But despite its notoriety, few people know that the song's real name is actually 'Nel blu dipinto di blu'.
Big artists and newcomers
Those are the two categories in the competition, with established artists and unsigned names, though in the past there have been two extra categories - Groups and Classics. This year there will be 20 artists competing for the big prize, alongside eight newbies. However, for the first 20 years it was held, each song was sung by two different artists, to emphasize that this was a song competition rather than a prize for the best performer.
The song titles from newcomers this year include two titles all Italian-learners will be familiar with: 'Il congiuntivo' (the subjunctive) and 'Come stai' (how are you).
Watch for more interesting Sanremo facts in subsequent Newsletters.
101 Reasons to be Proud Your Italian
Reason # 5 CONVIVIO
There is no exact English language translation for the Italian word convivio . “Conviviality” might be a cognate, but that
word just doesn't’ quite do it. Convivio is a distinctly Italian kind of hospitality centered around the enjoyment of good
food, good wine, family, and friends. A familiar scene in so many films with Italian subject matter will show a large group
of people sitting around a long table, talking and gesturing passionately as they pass dishes to one another, pour wine,
and break bread.
In our family, someone always began holiday meals by spilling a few drops of wine on the pristine white linen tablecloth
as he said, “Buon’ apetitio..” They did this to make guests feel at home and not worry about making a mess. Naturally,
Nonna was none too thrilled with the traditions, but the gesture is the essence of convivio.
When people are entertained in your home, the most important thing is that they feel relaxed and enjoy themselves.
Convivio has nothing to do with elegant tablecloths, fine china, sterling silverware, crystal glasses, and the like. It has
everything to do with taking pleasure in good conversation, enjoying a long, lingering, wonderful meal, and being
surrounded by people you love and care for. It is the very antithesis of “fast food,” a sad American innovation that
unfortunately has slowly made some inroads in Italy, although the resistance to it there remains strong.
The word is derived from the Latin very convivere, which means to live together, but the Italian sense of it means
specifically to eat together and to do it with great enjoyment and pleasure. Italians generally make wonderful hosts - one
of the reasons, perhaps, that so many of them have thrived in the restaurant business, where convivio is essential to
success. People don’t return to restaurants in which they don’t feel comfortable.
But convivio has less to do with restaurants than it does with carrying on a tradition of hospitality at home. If you want to
experience it, invite the people you love best over to dinner one night and spend the time with them enjoying their
company, the abundant food you have prepared for the occasion, some fine Italian wine, and all the laughter, good talk,
warmth, and love that the evening generates. You’ll want to do it again and again. And tell your friends to watch out -
because convivio is contagious.
Fact - The name for Italy comes from the Greek "Italos", a
legendary king.
Fact - Lilies are the national flower of Italy.
Fact - Italy is actually called the Italian Republic.
Fact - Italy has 50 Unesco World
Heritage Sites, the most of any country in the world.
Fact - Italy is the fourth most visited country in the world.
Fact - Italy is the world's largest
exporter of wine.
