As for me, I need to believe the Gos-pel more, the true Gospel, the Easter Gospel. And one way I can do that is to believe other rival gospels less or even to give them up altogether. The word Gospel means “good news”; probably everybody knows that (just like everybody knows how much money you can save on car insurance

with just fifteen minutes of your time!).

Yes, the Gospel is God’s good news, and indeed it is good. But it is not the only thing out there that is touted as good news. That’s what I mean by other, rival gospels. The mar-ketplace is filled with self-help material: some of the rival gospels say that you can find happiness by getting thinner, or more fit, or richer, or more popular, or more sexy. The media is filled with rival gospels; some say that you should always keep your religion to yourself; others say that there is secret power inside you that you should tap into; others say that everything has to be fair and that you should fight for your fair share of whatever it is; others say that pleas-ure is the prize most to be sought out. Culture is filled with rival gospels. An innocent conversation with a neighbor or golf buddy over a cup of coffee can become an unexpected confrontation with a rival gospel. “This life is all there is;” “It’s better to take care of yourself and not worry about others;” “Don’t trust anybody, only yourself.” We some-how find ourselves on the nodding end of such conversa-tions, not even realizing what we are agreeing with.

The two consequences that I’m concerned about in my own life are these. One, I’m concerned that by believing false, rival gospels I become influenced by the spirits that are behind them. Two, I’m concerned that by believing false, rival gospels I am less influenced by the Holy Spirit. In other words, my concern is that all gospels (true or not) are spiritual in nature, and that whichever I believe in either drags me back into the domain of darkness that I’ve been saved from or more firmly plants me in the kingdom of the dear Son of God (Co. 1:13). What I mean to say is that it is all a form of spiritual warfare.

What about you, do you need to believe the Gospel more? Do you desire to be more firmly planted in the kingdom of the dear Son of God? I recommend that you take stock of what you believe. Easter is Gospel truth. “Christ Jesus came to save sinners, of whom I am chief” (I Tim. 1:15). That’s a Gospel packed with power. Believe it.

Blessings,

CPC Interim Senior Pastor

PST Updates | Session Report

WELCOME PASTOR JAKE GOD HAS LED US TO OUR SHEPHERD Submitted by Elder Larry Kurtz

God has led Covenant Presbyterian Church to its new Shepherd! At last, after almost a year, we have voted on a new Senior Pastor to lead CPC! The journey began months before he will actually arrive at CPC. The PST (Pastoral Search Team) was led to Pastor Jake McCall by the Holy Spirit.

On Sunday, February 22, 2015, CPC had the great opportunity to listen to Pastor Jake McCall preach a spirit-led, heart-felt, well-received sermon. Following the worship service, a congregational meeting was held and a vote was tallied. With great anticipa-tion, CPC members approved and the congrega-tion welcomed Pastor Jake McCall to shepherd the flock. The vote was practically unanimous , with 98% in favor of him becoming the new Senior Pastor. Jake graciously accepted with his beautiful and supportive family by his side, wife Alana and children, Ellie, Sam Jake and Elisa.

Pastor Jake has notified his present church, Grace Fellowship Church in Clanton, Alabama, of his calling to our flock. It is antici-pated that he will join us permanently in June.

Let us remember to keep Grace Fellowship in our prayers as they begin their journey to

find a new leader and Senior Pastor. We are thankful to them for supporting Pastor Jake and his family as he responds to his new calling in California.

Let us continue to pray that Pastor Jake and his family will have safe travels to Orange, CA and that the transition will be a smooth and memorable experience. We wait with eager hearts for the day we can welcome him to our worship service weekly and work along side him to further God’s Kingdom.

The entire PST wants to thank every member of Covenant for their patience and prayers for the past year. The PST prayer group that met every time we met was most helpful and appreciated. It has been a real pleasure serving you.

Welcome Pastor Jake & and family!!!

We are awaiting you!!

Dear CPC Church Family,

Our weekend of February 20-22, 2015 will always be one of the most memo-rable weekends of our lives. Even after being confident that I was being called to be your next Senior Pastor, I could have never prepared myself for the warmth, passion, and energy that I experienced when our family got to spend that weekend with you. That type of overwhelming affirmation will remain with me as I engage in the rewarding and challenging call as Senior Pastor of our Church.

I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know some key things that the Lord used in guiding me to Covenant Presbyterian to be your Pastor.

First, I truly believe that this is a unique opportunity for strategic ministry. Soon after I got connected with this possibil-ity, I realized that Covenant is in a providential position to impact multiple cities, neighborhoods, age groups, and people groups, which all find them-selves within minutes of the campus. This strategic position is enhanced as I consider the opportunities that are available through Covenant Christian School and many other happenings on campus that provide access to families within the community. This, of course, was wise planning by Covenant’s founding members and leaders (many of whom are reading this) and I’m cer-tain that God granted that wisdom and has purposed for it to have a present and future impact.

Second, as I got to know and hear from the PST, the Session, and the Staff,

it became clear that there is a healthy anticipation for a new season of ministry and I was assured that this expanded throughout the congrega-tion. Thus, I believe that this kind of anticipation provides fertile ground for the casting and implementation of a new and particular vision and mission for Covenant Presbyterian Church. And as the Church continues to corporately pursue God’s particular vision, I believe that the Holy Spirit will strategically use us in new ways for the glory of Christ. Third, I have been very encouraged and impacted by the commitments, faith-fulness, and boldness that reside in the history of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

This is no small matter because I believe God longs to honor and sustain a local church that has built herself on the foundation of Christ alone. I read with intrigue, Dr. Didier’s “Hang on to Your Heritage” and have asked count-less questions to many long-time mem-bers and the more I hear, the more I want to be a part of the Christ-centered work that was started here so many years ago. I believe that your history can be a fuel of sorts for how we look to proclaim the name of Christ and love our neighbors in 2015 and the years to come.

And finally, I am sure that God, by His Spirit, has brought me to you. Alana and I have seen one door open after another as we have walked towards you and just to be sure, there were times that we would close a door that was opened only to have God, by His grace, swing it open again. Often dur-ing this process, I would tell God that I needed clear answers and His patient help and each time He responded with clarity and His guiding hand. This was necessary for Alana and me to find our-selves here; God knew it was necessary and He was faithful. These are all things that give me great excitement and hope for what’s to come. I hope it does for you too. Grace and Peace.

Your Servant Pastor,

Jake

senior pastor, jake mccall

FROM A PASTOR’S HEART A bit more about Jake:

Jake McCall was born in

Tallahassee, FL, October 10, 1979. On February 9, 2008, he married Alana Johnson and soon began a family of their own. His children include Ellianna (5), Samuel Jake (3) and Elisa Joy (2).

Jake became a believer at Auburn University through the ministry of Dr. Peter Doyle of Trin-ity Pres in Opelika, AL. During that time, he sensed an increasing call to ministry.

He was ordained at the South-west Alabama Presbytery of the PCA (conferred prior to his com-pleting MDiv so he could pastor Grace Fellowship Church in 2010.)

He sensed affirmation of God’s call through a variety of life events: initial ministry experi-ences, marriage to Alana, his seminary training, business ex-perience, and mentorship, espe-cially the Grace Fellowship Eld-ers.

Vision for Ministry

Pastor Jake seeks revival and renewal in the Church that not only impacts the congregation in new and real ways, but carries outward to the community and internationally as well. He prays for his church to be a place of humble people who are desper-ate for the glory of God and the love of Christ.

He hopes to accomplish this vi-sion by teaching the truth of God’s Word, being in constant and fervent prayer for influence of His Spirit, and extending the mercy of God to the least and the lost.

APRIL 9 | Catherine Gudvangen 11:30am | St. Andrew’s Hall

“The Reality of Reality TV and the Truth in Advertising”

As a television producer, director, writer and story editor, Catherine Gudvangen has spent her career behind the veil of what’s real and what’s true … at least as the world wants to see it. She has written and produced reality shows for MTV, FX and Spike TV, and national commercials for clients includ-ing Fantastic Sam's, Oroweat, AAA, Farmers & Merchants Bank, WD-40, MagnaFlow and Royal Purple Synthetic Motor Oil. At one of the top direct-response marketing firms in the country, she has writ-

ten, produced and directed advertising campaigns for international brands and Fortune 500 companies and has met some interesting celebrities along the way. Catherine (who is a worship leader at CovP) will share what it takes to produce a television show or commercial, how she answers her most frequently asked question (“so, what exactly does a pro-ducer do?”), how she balances her life behind the lens with her life at home with her husband Tom and their blended family, and how we can all learn how to balance the reality and truth of today’s media with the reality and truth found in God’s Word.

APRIL 16 | Dr. Jean Wilcox Hibben 11:30am | St. Andrew’s Hall

“Bringing Your Civil War Ancestor Back to Life through Songs and Stories of the War of Rebellion

Bring a friend and enjoy our informative and vivacious speaker, Dr. Jean Wilcox Hibben, PhD, MA, CG, as she presents her ad-aptation of “Bringing Your Civil War Ancestor Back to Life: Songs and Stories of the War of Rebellion.” The four years of the Civil War are examined through the songs of the times and a narrative that ties the use of music to the events during the conflict, both on the battlefield and on the home-front.

Jean has been playing guitar for about 50 years, learning a vari-ety of other folk instruments along the way. Jean is a Board

Certified genealogist with a master’s degree in speech communication and doc-torate in folklore. She is a native of Chicago and a retired college professor. She is presently Director of the Corona Family History Center and a Board Member of the Association of Professional Genealogist as well as Past-President of the Southern California Chapter. She served as lead researcher on the PBS television program Genealogy Roadshow in 2013.

The Country Store will be open where you can visit with your friends while choosing a book to take home to read. Also you will enjoy looking at the lovely jewelry, pretty napkins and greeting cards for all occasions.

A delicious lunch will be served and reservations may be made at the Women’s Fellowship table on the patio between worship services on

Sundays, March 29, April 5 and 12. ($5 due at that time)

Childcare will be provided by request. Please bring a sack lunch for your child.

MARCH 19 | Anita Price 11:30am | St. Andrew’s Hall

“A Walk in the Footsteps of the First Californians”

Join us as we turn back in time to the year 1615, and learn what life was like on the land where our church campus is to-day. Our knowledgeable speaker on the subject is Anita Price, a Covenant member and also a Docent at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.

Through artifacts and vessels, Anita will enlighten us with the experience of a close-up look at the pre-Columbian people who lived right here on the land where we worship today.

Spring Fling Brunch

Saturday, May 16 10am | St. Andrew’s Hall

(doors open at 9:30) The Women’s Fellowship is again spon-soring their annual Spring Fling Brunch. Mark your calendars now to save the date for this exciting and fun day.

The morning will begin with a delicious brunch, and of course an opportunity to take a chance on winning one of the many lovely Opportunity Baskets.

Then by popular request, we will again have the wonderful, musical talent en-tertainment of Kathy Gipson, Crystal Cooper, Stephanie Getz, and Kathy’s daughter, Amanda Kate Ferris.

Kathy plays the piano and composes the music; Crystal is a soprano soloist, as is Amanda Kate, and Stephanie plays the flute and piccolo. They will be playing beautiful, toe-tapping patri-otic music that we all love, and also many favorite songs from the wonderful music of the 1940’s era.

Also, a children’s choir drawn from our own Covenant School students in second through fifth grade will begin the program by entertaining us with an international song of love and longing. What a treat it will be to listen to the sweet voices and see the cute smiles of these darling children.

My Testimony of Praise - Betty Shattuck

I want to thank the many loving people who have transported me to and from Cove-nant for six weeks in order for me to work as church administrator. I have certainly felt loved and supported by the Covenant congregation. I also want to share with you some of the truths God has taught me through this experience after I broke my ankle.

I know the Lord allowed this accident for a reason – a reason I may never entirely know, but I choose to trust that His will, His love, care, mercy, blessings and healings will be accomplished. I do know that “All things work together for good to those who are called according to God’s purposes.”

I can choose to thank, praise and glorify the Lord even in hard times and circum-stances that I may not like. In 31 Days of Praise, Ruth Myers has been a real inspira-tion to me. Let me share a fragment of page 49 with you: “With You (God), nothing is accidental, nothing is incidental, and no experience is wasted…every trial that You allow to happen is a platform on which You reveal Yourself, showing Your love and power, both to me and to others looking on…You hold the future and You will always be with me, even to my old age…and through eternity.”

Isaiah 46:4 (NLB): “I will be your God throughout your lifetime – until your hair is white with age. I made you and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.”

Dear Covenant Family,

I would like to express my thanks to so many of you who have been so suppor-tive to my family for the past eight years…

My amazing mother passed away almost eight years ago… you were there in at-tendance, prayers, support, love and care. My grandmother passed away al-most four years ago… you were there once again. My precious father passed away three weeks ago and you have been there still… I feel overwhelmed by the amount of love I have received from you in the way of cards, thoughts, prayers, hugs and words of encourage-ment.

I was speaking to a loving COVP member about feeling like an “orphan” and she said that I have so many “parents” here at COVP to mentor me and give me the support I need to get through. She was right… in spades!

I feel so blessed to be a part of such a

steadfast prayer group, loving congrega-tion, supporting staff, caring ministry and genuine church family. Words aren’t enough to thank you for helping me through these tough times and re-joicing for the release of my loved ones to be with the Lord.

Blessings to you and once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

With tons of love,

Tricia Davies

Dear Covenant,

I am glad to be a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. People are very car-ing. I want to thank everyone for your prayers. The operation on my eyelids was a success!

Darlene Paul
