A Message from Our Pastor… Dear Friends,

Having entered into the great Season of Easter, where we celebrate the transformative and life-giving power

of God at work in the Risen Jesus, the archdiocesan “Be Missionary Disciples” pastoral planning process now

takes another step forward in the ongoing effort of transforming and renewing the life of our local Church as

a spiritual community of missionary disciples of the Lord Jesus.

Back in October, we shared with you a proposal from Archbishop Lori about how parishes throughout the

Archdiocese would be configured into arrangements that will be known as “Pastorates.” Please recall that a

“Pastorate” is a single parish or more than one parish working together and led by a single Pastor.

We then provided opportunities for everyone to provide feedback on the proposal. This feedback was then

shared with the Archbishop’s planning team. Following upon this extensive process of consultation and dis-

cernment of this proposal, a determination of what this configuration will look like has now been completed.

With the configuration determined, the next step in the plan calls for the “activation” of these various Pastor-

ates over time (i.e. not all the Pastorates will take effect at the same time). “Activation” of a Pastorate begins

when the Pastor for the Pastorate is named. This, in turn, begins the formal planning process for that Pastor-

ate.

Our parish participation in the archdiocesan planning process includes the following points:

the creation of a Pastorate that will include the Parishes of Saint Ann, Hagerstown; Saint Mary, Hager-

stown; and Saint Michael, Clear Spring

it is anticipated that our Pastorate will be “activated” in Phase 3 of the process (2020-2022)

in the meantime, we will have the opportunity to delve more deeply into the notions of “missionary disci-

pleship” and “missionary conversion” toward the development of a very strong spiritual foundation in

preparation for the more specific and concrete Pastorate design process that will eventually take place

a team of Archdiocesan staff will provide facilitation, guidance and support once our Pastorate planning

process begins

A special section featuring this most recent update about the “Be Missionary Disciples” pastoral planning

process is included in the May edition of The Catholic Review, mailed to all households. There are a few cop-

ies available here in church for those who are not registered on that mailing list. Please also see http://

bemissionarydisciples.org.

Please know how fortunate we both are to be serving in these vibrant parish communities as your respective

pastors. We look forward to working together with each of you throughout the coming months as we will

have opportunities to give careful consideration to discussing and understanding how we will continue our

participation in the parish planning process. This is a process which – like the Season of Easter – will surely

lead us to encounter in a new way the transformative and life-giving power of God at work in the Risen Jesus

among us!

May the Lord bless our efforts as we seek to discern and heed the promptings of the Holy Spirit and strive to

become more authentic disciples of Christ who lead others to a renewed encounter with Jesus and the Church!

Have a great week – alleluia!

The Sacrament of Baptism Baptism is God's most beautiful and magnificent gift…. We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, gar-ment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God's Lordship. St. Mary’s offers the gift of baptism on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at 12:30pm. Baptism Class is scheduled the fir st Sunday of each month in the Conference Room of the Parish Center from 12:30 to 1:30pm. It is very important that babies be baptized as soon as possible and preferably within six weeks of birth. Therefore, Fr. Cibelli is offering this sacrament more often. A good precedence would be, as soon as par-ents begin to announce their pregnancy, to call and schedule their baptism agenda shortly after. Please keep in mind, Mass attendance is a require-ment for the Sacrament of Baptism to occur. Call the Parish Office 301-739-0390 ext. 110, Paula will assist you.

The hosts and the wine being used for the month of April have been donated by the

St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Confirmation Candidates will attend a Day of Prayer at Seton Shr ine on Friday, May 5, to prepare for the reception of Confirmation. All Candidates are to meet in the Parish Center at 8:00AM. We will return to St. Mary at 4:00PM.

Rehearsal for the Eucharist Celebration will be held in the church on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 6:30PM. All First Communicants are urged to attend.

First Communion

Eucharistic Celebration for the First Communion class will be held on Sunday, May 7, at 1:00 PM in the church. Details of meeting place for the procession will be mailed to all parents.

ASK THE PRIEST

Father,

1.) I was asked about limbo. I haven’t heard “limbo” mentioned since I was in grade

school….Can you explain limbo and who goes there?

2.) Do babies from abortions and miscarriages all go to heaven?

The Council of Trent (session 6: ch. 4) concluded that “the justification of the sinner. .

. cannot be effected except through the laver of regeneration [i.e. baptism] or the DESIRE

for it.” Therefore, it is the hope of the Church that children who have not yet reached the

age of reason may still experience the salvation of Jesus by a DESIRE for it.

In 2005, a Vatican Theological Commission issued the following statement. “It is

clear that the traditional teaching on this topic has concentrated on the theory of limbo, un-

derstood as a state which includes the souls of infants who die subject to original sin and

without baptism, and who, therefore, neither merit the beatific vision, nor yet are subjected

to any punishment, because they are not guilty of any personal sin. This theory, elaborated

by theologians beginning in the Middle Ages, never entered into the dogmatic definitions of

the Magisterium, even if that same Magisterium did at times mention the theory in its ordi-

nary teaching up until the Second Vatican Council. It remains therefore a possible theologi-

cal hypothesis. However, in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992), the theory of lim-

bo is not mentioned. Rather, the Catechism teaches that infants who die without baptism are

entrusted by the Church to the mercy of God, as is shown in the specific funeral rite for such

children. The principle that God desires the salvation of all people gives rise to the hope that

there is a path to salvation for infants who die without baptism (cf. CCC, 1261), and there-

fore also to the theological desire to find a coherent and logical connection between the di-

verse affirmations of the Catholic faith: the universal salvific will of God; the unicity of the

mediation of Christ; the necessity of baptism for salvation; the universal action of grace in

relation to the sacraments; the link between original sin and the deprivation of the beatific

vision; the creation of man “in Christ”.

The conclusion of this study is that there are theological and liturgical reasons to hope

that infants who die without baptism may be saved and brought into eternal happiness, even

if there is not an explicit teaching on this question found in Revelation. However, none of

the considerations proposed in this text to motivate a new approach to the question may be

used to negate the necessity of baptism, nor to delay the conferral of the sacrament. Rather,

there are reasons to hope that God will save these infants precisely because it was not possi-

ble to do for them that what would have been most desirable— to baptize them in the faith

of the Church and incorporate them visibly into the Body of Christ.

“Ask The Priest” is a continuing feature of the Bulletin. If you have a question regarding the Catholic faith, please place your question in the box on the back table.

SCHOOL NEWS

"Be Still and Know that I am God" Please consider joining us at St. James in Boonsboro for our monthly prayer service in the style of the Taize community on Friday, April 28, at 7:00. This candlelit service is intended to help us calm the distractions in our minds so we can listen to the Holy Spirit in the quiet of our hearts. We will sit in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament and hear passages of scripture from the coming Sunday's Mass. We sing a simple repeti-tive song (just listening is okay too!), we keep ourselves in silence for a period, and we offer intentions. It's a powerful way to pray corporately and privately at the same time. Please call Barbara at 703-297-5571 with any questions.

20th, 10:00AM-3:00PM. St. Peter Church, Hancock. This retreat will be based upon Fr. Jack

Lombardi’s upcoming book, “ Thirty-Three Breaths: A Little Book on Meditation”. This in-

inward prayer, and scripture-based prayer. Lunch is included as well as meditation card, excerpts

from Fr. Jack’s “Little Book,” a coupon for future free book; spiritual guide-handouts, Q & A
