March 2018 The Walk Way

Happy March! It is time to celebrate the coming for Spring. We also celebrate that we have full teams and pilgrims for the walks to be a go. Praise God!

2 Corinthians 4:17-18

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is un-seen since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

It is often tempting to become so fixed on what is in front of us and what we want that we lose sight of what God has for us. Change is difficult and requires sacrifice and struggle, but God did not intend for us to stay the same and be stagnant. We are called to continually grow and change. I hope never to say I am just like I was ten years ago. I want to be bet-ter than I was ten years ago, constantly growing in my relationship with Jesus, my husband, my children, my church, and my friends. I know as a teacher the school I work for would not be happy if I said I am doing things just the way I did when I started teaching 19 years ago. Growth is good, but it requires work and focus. It also requires change and change is often scary.

When change comes to any life, country, community, or organization there is always adversity and often pain. But growth requires change. If you have ever decided to im-prove your health or get into shape you know how hard change is. In order to lose weight and get into shape one must make some hard decisions. Often the first steps to progress usually include things such as a healthy eating plan, increased exercise, and developing a support system to hold us accountable. The beginning is generally very painful, and sore muscles or food detox will make anyone want to quit. Sometimes you have friends or family who don’t understand why you want to change, and the forces start to work against you. We all know if you stick with it, the payoff is great.

Our pastor once shared with us that we cannot go to God and expect blessings to flow into our hands if we approach him with clenched fists holding on to what we want. We

have to let go and receive His blessings with open hands and open hearts. We need to continually stop ourselves from saying “but God, I want ...or...but God, I think.” We should open our minds and prayerfully consider what God wants for us. When we go to God with humble hearts and open hands He can fill us with blessings beyond our imagi-

nation. It is hard to know what God wants for our Emmaus community when we contin-ue to place our wants and desires first.

We made a call to action for full teams and 15 pilgrims and our community stepped up. What are the next steps for the Eastern Shore Emmaus community? What does God want for us? If we approach Him in the spirit of humility, He is faithful and will show us. Jim and I feel led to fast and pray for our Emmaus community. A Message From Our Spiritual Director

Zechariah 4:6b: Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts. We are confronted by evil, sin, and suffering every day, but sometimes we are simply overwhelmed. The recent shootings in the high school in Florida rudely reminded us of the power of evil in the world, and also challenged us, as the people of God in the world, to confront evil and minister to those who are hurting. Jesus tells us we are salt and light in the world, bearing witness to the saving, healing love of God. How, exactly, do we do that? What is our most effec-tive witness to the world? Sometimes, how we do ministry is just as im-portant as what we do. If we seek to build God’s kingdom while using the means and weapons of the world, we are only serving the god of this world. If our full trust, for example, is in traditional weaponry instead of the armor of God, are we not still serving the god of violence, power and might? Historically, some of our most abysmal failures as witnesses for Christ have come about

by trying to achieve the goals of the kingdom of God while using means and methods of the world. The Crusades of the Middle Ages are a brutal lesson in how not to win people to Christ - by the point of a sword. The above Scripture from Zechariah is, I feel, a timely reminder from God to achieve His victory by using His means: “not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit.”

On Sunday of the Emmaus weekend, the focus is on going into the world to be in minis-try to others who are hurting and in need of God’s love and grace. The means we are to use is the power and fruit of the Spirit. We shape the world, not by traditional power, but by the pow-er of love. Our armaments are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, used in love. That is what has healed and transformed each of us, and is the means by which Christ will transform and heal this world. People are hurting and grieving. They need us to show them a path to the healing love of God. Point to the kingdom of God; minister to them in the power of the spirit; point them to the Prince of Peace, Christ our Lord. De COLORES

Fly With Christ!

We as Christians spend a lot of time wondering and praying about God’s purpose for us. What is our calling? What do you want of me, Jesus? We pray asking God’s plan to be revealed to us.

With the recent passing of the Rev. Billy Graham I’ve reflected on that subject even more, but oddly enough with more clarity. Most of us would not want to have our lives compared to that of Rev. Graham. He was known all over our world for his work for God. He brought countless people to Jesus, he ministered to the needy, he was a spir-itual advisor to presidents. He was a great disciple for Christ. What was his main pur-pose?

In the parable of the lost sheep in Matthew 18:12-14, Jesus tells of a man that leaves ninety-nine sheep that are safely grazing with the flock to go find the one sheep that has wandered off and became lost.

Jesus has commissioned us, Rev. Graham, and the shepherd with the same purpose; to save what is lost. It’s really that simple. To find the lost and bring them to Jesus.

Now, how we accomplish this purpose will look differently for each of us. God has given each of us specific talents and gifts to use for His purpose. God gives us opportunities to bring others to Christ. It is up to each of us to see these opportunities and act on them. For a lot of us this takes us out of our comfort zone. But, if God calls us to it He will see us through it.

We all may not be called to be an evangelist on the level of Rev. Graham. We may be called to be the ‘Billy Graham’ of our community. We may be called to be the ‘Billy Graham’ of our street. We may be called to be the ‘Billy Graham’ at our workplace. We may be asked to be the ‘Billy Graham’ of our family. We may be called to be the ‘Billy Graham’ of our household. We may be called to be the ‘Billy Graham’ of our grocery store.

We are all called to bring the lost to Christ. And each life is important to Christ.

Our next Chrysalis board meeting is Tuesday, March 20th at 7 pm at Mears Memorial UMC in Keller. All are invited to join us to discuss ideas in how to serve our youth.

I was struck by the simple, yet profound nature of the quote above. In it, Martin Luther illustrates what we all as believers know to be true. That prayer is not just a treasured privilege given to us through our relationship with Christ, but it is a crucial practice in maintaining the strength of that relationship. God intends conversa-tion with Him through prayer to be part of our daily lives with Him and He treasures the time that we take to come to Him with the concerns and praises of our hearts. Why? Simply because He so deeply loves us. Just like any relationship based on love, you seek to spend quality time with those that you care about. With these thoughts about prayer in mind, I'd like to invite each of you to join the Em-maus Prayer Team.
