FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS
A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPTER’S CHAIR
The Central Florida Chapter Officers and Committee Chairs have been hard at work throughout the first
four months of our fiscal year working to accomplish the goals that we have set forth as a Chapter and improve
the benefits available to our members.
In September, the Chapter welcomed our 2013- 2014 FICPA Chair, Ken Strauss along with Rivers Buford,
the Governmental Affairs Director and Justin Thames, the Governmental Affairs Manager, who together
provided an insightful legislative update as well as an overview of some new benefits available to FICPA
members, including the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation and Insurance Exchange.
Our annual FICPA Student Field Day event was held in October and welcomed over eighty college
students from various Universities across the state. These students were able to spend the day with several
Central Florida CPA firms and private businesses to learn about the profession. The FICPA was also able to award

six scholarships to deserving accounting students to complete their degrees or further their accounting
education. This successful event wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of Ashley Vance, our
Accounting Careers Chair, and the local firms and businesses that took the time out their busy day to support the
Chapter and the future of the profession, for which we thank all of you.
We are looking forward to several upcoming Chapter events including our annual “Play for Charity Day”
organized by Tarsha Jacobs and her dedicated “Special Projects” Committee. This event will take place on
Saturday November 16th at Lake Claire Park on the UCF Campus. Chapter members along with UCF students will
have the opportunity to show off their sports skills and enjoy some comradery, all while donating to worthy
organizations. Also, beginning in late November, Kirsten Burbridge and the YCPA Committee will begin their
annual Toys for Tots Drive, which collects hundreds of toys for deserving children in the Central Florida Area.
If you are interested in attending any of these events or becoming more active in the Central Florida Chapter,
please visit our website (www.centralfloridaficpa.com) or contact a Chapter Officer. We are looking forward
to wrapping up a successful first half of our year and we hope that you can join us!

Blankner School middle school student Wesley Huddleston, left, listens as FICPA volunteer Linda Howard
gives a lesson on financial literacy on October 10, 2013.
Jacob Langston, Orlando Sentinel – October 9, 2013
Linda Howard, pictured above, has visited Boone High School and Blankner K-8 schools in an effort
to increase the financial literacy of the next generation of students. During the lecture, she discussed family
budgeting and practical application of financial concepts. The end message: learn to manage your expenses
or face potential financial distress.
There will be a total of 5 modules, and the efforts of the taskforce have been recognized in several
articles published by the Orlando Sentinel.

FICPA FIELD DAY
The Central Florida Chapter of the FICPA hosted its annual Student Field Day on October 25, 2013. The
event allows students the unique opportunity to get an inside look at the firms as well as a real world feel of the
accounting industry. The event once again proved to be a success providing over 80 students the opportunity to
visit the offices of Central Florida accounting firms.
The day began with students and firms meeting at the Crowne Plaza downtown for breakfast and
pairing for the morning session. Students were then transported to their morning firm where they spent roughly
two hours learning about the firm and different aspects of the profession. Everyone came back to the Crowne
Plaza for a luncheon where this year’s guest speaker was Sara Brady, President/CEO of Sara Brady Public
Relations, Inc. Scholarships were also awarded on behalf of the FICPA Educational Foundation to Adrianna
Campbell, Lauren Tindel, Marc Yeager, Sierra Adams, Artus Nemati, and Aaron Blades. After the luncheon
students were paired with a different firm where they were transported to and spent the afternoon.
This event would not be possible without the generous support of our local firms. We would like to
thank the following participating firms: Averett Warmus Durkee, BKHM, CPA, Borcheck & Gase, Carr, Riggs &
Ingram, Cherry Bekaert LLP, Geller Ragans, Glickstein Lavel Carris, Moore Stephens Lovelace,
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Vestal & Wiler, and Verizon.
For more information on the event please contact Ashley Vance, [email protected].
