A Message from our CEO

Dear Valued Friend, I am happy to introduce our first publica on of "Spotlight" as a tribute to my father's legacy. We have come a long way in 40 years, since the establishment of Seeach Sod in 1971. We owe a great deal of gra tude to the One Above and to his worthy messengers, our generous donors, for helping us become the leading special educa on provider to the religious community in Yerushalayim. We are grateful for all the friendships we have already established, and today, we present you with this magazine in the hopes of spreading our mission even further. We o en get the ques on: Why the name “Seeach Sod”? When my father Rabbi Dov Levy z”l, was trying to come up with a name for his newly formed school over forty years ago, he came home from shul one Shabbos, his face shining, and declared: “I found the right name for this ins tu on: Seeach Sod”. This name was inspired by the words wri en in the tefillah of Keter: “K’noam seeach sod sarfei kodesh” which alludes to the secret u erances of the heavenly angels. “Our ins tu on was established for children who are as pure as angels who never sinned,” explained the legendary founder of Seeach Sod. And indeed, Seeach Sod con nues to explore every possible venue to reveal the secrets - the hidden strengths - of these holy children. We send you this newsle er with the purpose of sharing with you the magic, beauty and fulfillment that is revealed when we expose the latent capabili es of special neshamos.

Wishing you a Chag Kasher V'Samayach,Rabbi Shimon Levy,CEO

Evening of Inspira onOn the evening of January 6th, everyone was ge ng ready for the upcoming snow storm. It was indeed a cold night, yet here at Seeach Sod our "Evening of Inspira on" carried on as planned and our Seeach Sod hall was filled with the warmth of our audience. A endees were truly inspired by the nights' event! The night was filled with ac on with speakers such as Rebbetzin Rivka Bergstein, Rabbi Wi ler Shlita, the CEO of Seeach Sod, Rabbi Shimon Levy, and Rebbetzin Rena Tarshish. Addi onally, a video presenta on was followed by a stunning and professional performance by the young women of Chemdas Seminary with one dance performed by a group of students from Seeach Sod's Junior High School Division – Ma'oz Yerushalayim. The buffet display was simply gorgeous (and delicious!) and each visitor enjoyed the array of delicacies that were served in a most elegant fashion.

Mothers Annual Retreat at Kinar HotelFrom January 18-20, mothers of Seeach Sod members went on an exclusive mother's retreat to the Kinar Hotel up north. These mothers, who greatly appreciated this much deserved vaca on and me - off from taking care of their special needs children, enjoyed their

me immensely. The women were able to let go of their daily responsibili es and relish in a purely fun filled environment! Their days were blended between

me-off to relax, special ac vi es, superb meals and beau ful accommoda ons. The par cipants enjoyed a wonderful performance by Tali Avrahami called "Bli Lachatz", they were deeply touched by the words of Rabbi Gross (father of two daughters who died from the chemical accident in Jerusalem this past year), and they par cipated in a mothers panel discussion where the women shared stories and gave each other strength and support. The trip ended with a stop at the kever of Rabbi Meir Baal Hanes to daven for their precious children. Many of the children stayed in our Respite Center while their mothers were away, making it a busy, but very successful week at Seeach Sod!

Innova ve Interac ve Siddur developed at Seeach SodSeeach Sod staff developed an Interac ve Siddur (prayer book) mainly for our first grade students. The siddur gives these children the opportunity to feel equal to their siblings and friends in regards to their individual ownership of a siddur, as well as being a part of the accustomed “Mesibat Siddur” party.

The siddur was designed for verbal and non-verbal students alike, using three ways of communica on on each page. Each interac ve page includes text, sounds of the words and pictures. The pictures are images the children are familiar with and recognize, including some pictures used from the world renowned PECS system. As the students flip each page, each Tefillah speaks out to them making the experience of davening exci ng and achievable! Each siddur is personalized and custom made for each student's specific capabili es and verbal use. This past year, the students prac ced each day with a giant siddur (similar to their personal siddurs which were not yet acquired), as they became comfortable to its words, sounds and pictures. This of course led to the finale of receiving their own personal Interac ve Siddurs, at the emo onal Siddur Par es this past winter.

Simon Says: iThink iCanOn November 17, Simon, the father of one of our students, ran a half-marathon in Las Vegas together with his dear friend Mr. Abrahams. Together they raised money to buy iPads for his son and his classmates at Beit Metzudot, Seeach Sod's branch for students with severe disorders. Simon explained why he chose iPads as the target goal: “Recent research proves that the applica on of Informa on and Communica ons Technology (ICT) in special ed. classrooms has a significant posi ve impact on: student mo va on, cogni ve s mula on, and basic life skills. That is why I have chosen to dedicate my marathon goal towards iPads, which will open a world of exci ng opportuni es for my son, his friends and their teachers and therapists.”

One of our most major accomplishments the past few months has been hos ng tour groups on the Seeach Sod premises! Rebbetzin Rivka Bergstein, our project co-ordinator, is an incredibly mo vated and highly energe c staff member, infusing visitors with a feeling of awe, inspira on and total astonishment! In the past couple of months, our visitors have included, but are not limited to, the following guests: • Seminaries: Peninim, Machon Rayah, Bnos Sara, Sharfmans, Chemdas, Peninim, Me'ohr, Bilvavi, and Midreshet Rachel• Mrs. Lori Palatnick's JRWP (Jewish Renaissance Women's Program) groups from Los Angeles, Oregon and Hungary. • Go Inspire Groups• Directors from Michlelet Yerushulayim• Rabbi Yehoshua Fass, the CEO of Nefesh B'Nefesh• Mr. Howard Lorch, the CFO of OHEL from NY• Rabbi Eisman, the CEO of SHAI from NJ•Rabbi Aryeh Ginzberg, renowned Rabbi from Cedarhurst, NY. • In addi on, we had a special visit from The Berman High School from Silver Spring, MD. Below is an excerpt from a 12th grader at Berman High School, Shoshi Trombka, who wrote an essay following her meaningful visit to Israel and Seeach Sod.

The Things I carried on The Mission to IsraelFeeling worried, I stare at my overflowing suitcase on the evening of November 18. I had started the night by carrying the empty, yet heavy suitcase up from the basement at 9.5 pounds. A er many tries of tugging and pulling at the zipper, my purple suitcase finally closes. The suitcase was filled with many gi s and "American" requests for friends and family living in Israel. As I put my suitcase on the scale, I look away. My father puts down the suitcase. "You barely made it." I look down at the scale, 49.4 pounds! I took a sigh of relief - a weight had been taken off my shoulders, literally! On Wednesday, November 26, my bus made a stop at, what I would argue, was the best part of The Mission. When bus 4 arrived at Seeach Sod, I was not excited for what would follow. I knew that we were visi ng a facility that provided for those with special needs in the ultra-orthodox community. I expected this visit to be chao c with a side of language barriers. A er we arrived, we heard a presenta on by Rivka, one of the directors, Sarah, another staff member, and a mother whose son benefits from the Yeshiva program for the adult men in Seeach Sod. The girls and boys were split up for the visit. On our way down to visi ng the girls, Sarah addressed the language issue. “This isn't about spoken language, the only language you need to understand is the language of love.”

What happened, was just that. When we entered the room, there were probably over 60 young women in the room and we were to decorate dreidels with them; a project done in an cipa on for chanukah, which would be coming in just three weeks.

I began to work with a young women named Penina* (*name changed). As we decorated the dreidel, I began to spin the dreidel, Penina was taken over by laughter. I then, suspended the dreidel in the air, and spun it from above. Penina thought this was hilarious. As we con nued decora ng the dreidel with gli er and s ckers, Penina kept asking ?ריקודים when is ,מתי dancing? I wasn't sure what kind of dancing she was referring to, but I responded each me with יכולה את ,you should ask your teacher. Finally- ,לשאול את המורה שלךmusic began to play, and all the girls, teachers, and my school mates formed a huge circle and everyone started dancing. I turned to Penina and asked her if she wanted to come dance. She said that she didn't want to. I spent some me trying to convince her to dance with me, but a er a while I decided that I should stop. A er two or three songs I hear !,בנות girls, this is the last song! I returned to ,זה השיר האחרוןPenina and said, "This is the last song, you said that you wanted to dance, and this is the last chance!" She immediately came in and joined the circle. I pulled Penina into the middle and there we were, dancing together, just as she had been talking about the en re morning.

Once again, I took a sigh of relief - a weight had been taken off my shoulders once again, but with a new weight added at the same me. As each physical object was li ed out of my suitcase, an emo onal burden was placed in it. These are ‘burdens’ in the most posi ve sense; my new ‘burdens’ include the struggle I have to maintain the inspira on and keep the perspec ve that I received over The Mission and at Seeach Sod.

7 Steps to CopingBy: Anat Nagar Halevi

Besides my work at Seeach Sod as the director of health administra on, I o en give workshops on coping skills as a cer fied Life Coach. I mainly train women how to overcome challenges and difficul es in life.

I believe strongly everyone is created in tzelem elokim which means Hashem has already ins lled within us the capacity to cope. A main founding principal in this world is that we have already been given the strength and power to overcome anything. From the moment we were born G-d granted us the power to overcome pain. He believes in us, the ques on is do we believe in ourselves? If we have the belief in ourselves, we can overcome anything. We must see our own good points in every event that happens in our lives.

I try to assist women to live with self-assurance in knowing themselves and to have self-understanding of their own strengths. Our goal in life is to find our abili es and then channel them in the right way to live a life full of happiness and fulfillment.

My responsibility is to get people to believe in themselves that they are capable to go within and pull out all the inner tools, and to do it with true inner happiness. It is their responsibility to do the actual work. For that reason, I came up with 7 steps of coping which hase helped women have a map of how to direct themselves through a hardship.

Here are 7 steps to help incorporate these ideas. |1 Admit the challenge head on- What is the reality of the situa on. |2 Create a sentence that is your biased interpreta on of the situa on. |3 Acknowledge the feeling and label the feeling with a descrip ve and detailed word. |4 Decide what your responsibility is in regards to finding a solu on to the problem.

|5 Be realis c with what your abili es are and write down a list of all op ons in regards to the challenge.|6 Take ac on! Do something! Choose one op on from the list and follow through. |7 Do it with complete serenity and inner happiness. Feel comfortable with the decision with no held in buried feeling. If you do not feel totally shalem with your decision, go back to the list of op ons and choose a different op on.

A prac cal example:1. My co-worker le work early and le me with a lot of pressure to finish a project with a deadline. 2. It's not fair. She is so not right to leave early. This isn't proper work ethics. 3. I am feeling deeply frustrated and resen ul. 4. My only responsibility is to finish my part of the project.5. I have op ons. My op ons are:

• Get angry at her and hold it against her tomorrow• Tell the boss what she did• Do her work for her because it needs to get done• Leave work without finishing my job because if she can leave early, I can too• Take a five minute coffee break, sit down at my desk, finish the part of the job that is mine, and then go home a er I am done

6. I choose to take a five minute coffee break, sit down at my desk, finish the part of the job that is mine, and then go home a er I am done.7. I feel good about this decision. I am totally fine with it, feeling inner peace.

With these 7 steps, any challenge can be figured out! With Pesach coming, many challenges arise. Try these seven steps and feel free to send me feedback on this new way of coping at [email protected]. About the author:Anat Nagar Halevi has a MA in Health Administra on. She works at Seeach Sod in the Paramedical Treatments Department. She treats members of Seeach Sod (and their families) with physical, emo onal and physiological support. Translated by: Sarah Nathan

An incredible story of how a disabled young man found meaning in his life through music and a close friendship with legendary Chazzan Chaim Adler

Menachem.Menachem. A young man of stature, depth, self-confidence, ar cula on and poise. He also happens to have CP (Cerebral Palsy) and is blind. However, what is most shocking of all, is that his true nature only revealed itself in the last few years. Un l age 21, Menachem lived in Jerusalem with his parents, and a ended a non-religious school that catered to his physical needs, but not his emo onal ones. At age 21, Menachem joined the family of Seeach Sod and joined the Boys Voca onal Program in Romema. The program is called Ma'as, geared for adults over the age of 21, and it is a place that caters to the daily needs of 330 disabled religious men.

Over the years, Dovid Reicher, one of the directors of the Ma'as program, became the appointed staff member who tunes into the personal needs of each par cipant;

no doubt because of his devo on and love for the adult-workers. His office is covered in pictures of 'his boys', and Dovid is the person that always makes sure that each voca onal worker excels in his own unique way. Rav Rechier no ced immediately, upon Menachem's arrival in 2009, that he was a sad, in midated, reserved, and quiet young man who shared very li le with the guys around him. Dovid took upon himself to try and figure out how to get Menachem out of his shell of shyness and wake him up

from what seemed like a 21 year slumber. Soon a er Menachem joined Seeach Sod, he tragically lost his mother thereby making it a very difficult me for him; especially with the adjustment of star ng a new rou ne where he knew no one.

One Friday morning, a few months a er his arrival, the men were singing Kabalat Shabbat to bring in the spirit of Shabbat, and the Ma'as men were taking turns singing with the microphone. Dovid suddenly handed the microphone to Menachem who, to everyone's surprise, started singing. The en re room fell quiet in shock! Menachem had a golden voice; a truly rich, Chazzan-like voice that permeated the air with depth and invigora on. A er his short but outstanding performance, Dovid approached Menachem and asked if he enjoyed singing. His reply, as if he had been wai ng all his life to be asked this ques on, was a fervent 'Yes'. In fact, as it turned out, his father was a Chazzan and Menachem loved singing Chazzanut, which was a perfect puzzle-piece match for his voice capability. Dovid, thrilled to have found an opening to Menachem's soul, asked if there were any specific singers Menachem looked up to. Once again, Menachem had this answer ready and pre-packaged for delivery: Chaim Adler. Adler is the king of Chazzanut in Israel as well as interna onally and is famous for his voice and powerful Tifilot in the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem.

The Voice that Broke the ShellThe Voice that Broke the ShellThe Voice that Broke the ShellThe Voice that Broke the Shell

Page 13: A Message from our CEO - שיח סוד Message from our CEO ... pictures used from the world renowned PECS system. ... included, but are not limited to, the following guests:Authors:

A er this breakthrough moment, Menachem began his career in Chazzanut. He became the official Chazzan of the Ma'as shul in the morning, he joined the Seeach Sod choir, Pirchei Seeach, who sing publicly at different events in Jerusalem, and he became the official "Kabbalat Shabbat Conductor" on Fridays. With

me, Menachem found himself singing at the Seeach Sod's Annual Simchat Beit Hashuava which hosts 2,000 people each year on the roo ops of Seeach Sod. The audience includes Rabbi Shmuel Orbach, Maran Rishon Litzion Harav Yitzchak Yosef, Rav Azrachi and Rav Finkel from Yishvat Mir; Israeli delegates including the Director of the Ministry of Welfare, the Head of the Ministry of Educa on, and the Head of Shas poli cal Party. Even with all these famous figures a ending, Menachem had no reserva ons on his part. When given a microphone and given the opportunity to sing, nothing held him back. Absolutely nothing.

On August 5th, 2012, Menachem and the Pirchei Seeach Choir sang in front of more than 10,000 men in Binyianei Ha'eumah at the Siyum Hashas where the audience was standing up with streaming tears and applauding the moving scene of six special needs young men sharing their inner voices with the frum world. A er that evening, Menachem told his father that he had never felt anything like that night; the ambiance, the energy, the simcha, the emo ons...it filled him up with a sense of purpose and euphoria to last Menachem many years ahead.

Menachem began making friends and in fact became quite popular. His davening was going well, he worked well in his voca onal job, and he even started giving a sheur each week to the other guys in the Ma'as program. Dovid never did forget Menachem's role model and decided on Chanukah (2012) to take ac on. He called Chaim Adler, explained the situa on and described how much Menachem would appreciate to meet him. Dovid then invited Chaim Adler to join the Seeach Sod men's Chanukah Chagiga. Dovid offered Chazzan Adler a contribu on for his me….but Chazzan Adler wanted nothing. He was simply overwhelmed by the invita on and said it was his privilege, and not

Menachems', to join the celebra on.

This being a very special Chagiga, where Moishy Holzberg (the son of the Kedoshim Gavriel and Rivka Holzberg zt'l from the Mumbia terror a ack in 2008), was joining the Chagiga as a sign of what a true miracle is in our day, there was already an electricity in the air for the upcoming party. However, no one knew of the extra surprise; especially Menachem. At the beginning of the Chagiga, Menachem was called to the stage to sing for all the par cipants, and when he was called up …someone else was called to the stage too. For the first me, Menachem and Chaim Adler met and then sang together, in perfect harmony. Their voices travelled through the open air of the hall where few, but not many, understood the significance of their voices uni ng.

From that day forward, Chaim Adler called his true friend and colleague, "מנחם שלי" - My Menachem. Since that Chanukah celebra on, Menachem has visited Chazzan Adler's home and they have sang together on many occasions. Rav Adler considers Menachem a true friend and even began introducing him to other famous Chazzanim, including Tzodik Greunwald, who has also sang together with Menchem and befriended him.

Menacham has become a different person, and now at the age of 33, is famous in the world of Chazzanut. When Dovid Recheir looks at Menachem today, as does anyone in the Ma'as program, he sees a smart, verbal, outgoing, confident singer who makes friends quickly and is loved by all. In recent years, Menachem has performed in the Knesset, in the Ministry of Health, and at ceremonies for men going into the army אזרחי) ,Most recently, the CEO of Seeach Sod .(שירות Rav Shimon Levy Shlita, married off his first daughter where a grand Seeach Sod Sheva Brachot took place a few days a er the wedding. No doubt it was a privilege and honor for all who joined the Sheva Brachot, to become enlightened by Menachem's magnificent voice and powerful story. His voice indeed broke his shell.
