Winter in Wisconsin is the perfect time to enjoy the warmth of an

indoor museum visit. We have received nothing but praise for our

current special exhibit Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of

Egypt. I recommend you visit soon, because you’ll want to visit again

before this spectacular exhibit leaves Milwaukee.

In this issue of Wings, read more about the “Incomparable Cleopatra”

from MPM’s curator and Egyptologist, Carter Lupton. Also, learn

about MPM’s very own Cleopatra coin and our original production

Cleopatra’s Universe.

In this issue we also acknowledge the museum’s donors for the

2010–2011 fiscal year. I cannot emphasize enough how appreciative

we are for this generous support which enables us to educate, explore,

discover and preserve the world and its people. Thank you.

You may have recently read about the MPM board approving an option

to purchase the former Discovery World building in the museum

complex. As we move to acquire funding to move forward with this

purchase, we are researching the best use of this space that will allow

MPM to offer more to our community. I will provide updates as these

plans develop.

I hope to see many of you at our annual Food & Froth Fest presented

by the Friends of the Museum on February 18th. This event is always a

community favorite and tickets sell out quickly.

Wishing you and your families a very happy and healthy 2012,

Jay Williams

This bronze coin depicting Cleopatra VII, part of MPM’s numismatics collection (NM 16360/20290), was minted in Alexandria during her reign (51–30 BC). The obverse shows the queen in profile, her hair in the Classical “melon” style, so-called because of the rows resembling a melon’s sections, with a bun in back and the royal diadem or ribbon.

Admittedly not beautiful, with thin lips, a prominent chin and even more prominent nose, was this depiction even realistic? Some have argued that the intent may have been to deliberately depict more masculine features, reminiscent not only of her male Ptolemaic predecessors, but possibly also of Alexander the Great and Marc Antony.

True portrait or not, this definitely is Cleopatra; the reverse, in Greek, reads CLEOPATRA BASILEUS (Cleopatra – Ruler or Monarch). It also has the Greek letter pi (p), behind the eagle, indicating it has a denomination of 80 drachmas; coins identical in weight and design but with the Greek muon (m) were valued at just 40 drachmas. There is a similar coin in the Cleopatra exhibition.

larger than a U.S. quarter.

Beautiful? In the two millennia since she lived, Cleopatra has been interpreted time and time again, usually as a beautiful voluptuary. Her depiction as an alluring, but immoral woman who had woven spells to captivate the hearts of mature, married Roman statesmen, was first started by Octavian, the heir to Julius Caesar, to offer a rationale for warring on Mark Antony. Never mind that both Caesar and Antony were notorious ladies’ men long before either met Cleopatra, and remained so all their lives. Still, the image has thus evolved, through statuary and painting, that this seductress was incomparably beautiful, and she is regularly portrayed by glamorous actresses–Sarah Bernhardt, Claudette Colbert, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, and, possibly before long, Angelina Jolie. But was she truly that beautiful?

Despite many photographs of Greco-Roman style busts and Egyptian style statues identified as Cleopatra in recent books, there are no unequivocal depictions of the queen except on her coins, which contain her name (see article on page 3). A small handful of busts from Rome are identified as Cleopatra based on broad similarities in hairstyle and facial features to the coin portraits. Several Egyptian statues have recently been attributed because of a triple uraeus (cobra head) thought by some to be exclusive to this queen. But none of either type of sculpture actually name her.

Incomparable Cleopatraby Carter Lupton Head of the MPM Anthropology & History Section

was she gorgeous or plain? was she white or black? Two of the most often posed questions about cleopatra, the last queen of egypt, both deal with her physical appearance. and since her body has yet to be recovered and/or identified, we may never have definitive answers.

Beguiling?Ancient literary sources, virtually all Roman, and all written decades to centuries after her death, indicate a definite element of beauty, but often suggest her features alone were not incomparable. The fascination she had for men like Caesar and Antony is described as resulting from her personality – her voice, wit, charm and intelligence.

but until we find her remains, no one will know for certain.

egyptian? As for Cleopatra’s ethnicity, she, like all members of her Ptolemaic dynasty, was of Macedonian stock, from north of Greece proper. She was a queen of Egypt, but she was not Egyptian. Her mother’s and one grandmother’s identities are not known for certain, but they were also likely to be of Macedonian descent, given the Ptolemies’ proclivity for brother-sister marriage. Even if one or both were possibly Egyptian (which in itself does not equate with “black” as it is used today), her overall make-up would have been mixed Mediterranean. She likely wouldn’t resemble Oprah Winfrey any more than she would Liz Taylor, nor be as attractive, to our eyes.

The Making of Cleopatra’s UniverseDaniel M. Soref Planetarium Director Bob Bonadurer talks about MPM’s original production.

7

Why create a film about Cleopatra? We have had a lot of success with IMAX and planetarium shows that correlate with our major traveling exhibitions. Once I learned that Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt was on our exhibition schedule, I looked for what was out there. There were no IMAX films on Cleopatra.

What was your inspiration behind Cleopatra’s Universe? I’m a teacher at heart and I wanted to share the knowledge I learned from my research on Cleopatra. I wanted the viewer to be immersed in her time and place – to see a studious and curious young woman and an intelligent ruler, and to experience her conflicts and her place in Egyptian history.

What was the process for creating Cleopatra’s Universe? After getting approval to proceed, I read as much as I could about Cleopatra, and as I read I brainstormed ideas for scenes in the film. Using animated maps was one of the first ideas, because I thought it important to Cleopatra’s story that it be based on Alexander the Great and his empire. An easy way to convey all that information is in an animated map. I kept developing ideas and scenes as I read and explored Cleopatra’s story. Planetarium producer Matt Wooten and I created illustrations of these scenes. Then, we shifted around the boxes with these illustrations to create the flow of a story. We began working with the animators as soon as we decided on a particular scene. In fact, the entire film was created visually before the final script was written and recorded.

How and where was the show produced? Cleopatra’s Universe is an animated film that incorporates live actors. Three quarters of the animation was done by a company in the Netherlands that we’ve worked with before. Matt Wooten and our Planetarium interns created the rest. Matt was also our sound engineer and we

recorded the narration in Milwaukee. We wanted a female voice to tell Cleopatra’s

story, and after listening to various voices, we selected Marge Pitrof, news director at WUWM.

We filmed live actors in the Netherlands and Milwaukee. The adult Cleopatra

is a professional actress from the Netherlands. Viewers can see

MPM Botany Curator Neil Luebke and Joe Nelson, former MPM educator, playing Romans in the film. History Curator Carter Lupton appears as himself.
