“A Matter of Treasure” A Generosity Quest 2015
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rest destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break
in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21
What possesses you? Are you possessed by a passion to accomplish the word of God? Are you possessed by a vision to make disciples for Jesus Christ? Are you possessed by the Holy Spirit, recognizing that your talents and resources are but gifts entrusted to you for God’s glory? Or are you possessed by the pursuit of glory for self? Could it be that you are possessed by the acquisition and accumulation of things – money and material possessions? The 2016 Mission and Ministry (operating and capital budget) for First United Methodist Church reflects a passion for being possessed by God – his vision, his ministry, his glory! This budget sustains the mission – to make disciples for Jesus Christ. This budget is an investment in eternal things. Yes, God blesses us with mate-rial provision, but he also entrusts to us the resources needed to touch lives with compassion and enlighten lives with the Good News of Jesus Christ. This year’s generosity theme is founded on Jesus’ call to treasure that which is most important and to invest our treasure in that which serves God. Our budget projections represent an opportunity for us to respond in faithfulness and joy. Our Generosity Emphasis will run from October 25 to November 22. Where shall your treasure be? In your account? Or in the work of God? Begin praying that God would inspire us all to “lay up treasures in heaven” and that our hearts would be united in loving and serving God in the world.
MAGNIFY Our new youth program for Middle School Youth kicked off Sunday, September 20, with 17 middle schoolers. We enjoyed fellowship and dinner, then went to the Middle School room on the 3rd floor for orientation and group building fun! Counselors are: Nickie Eagle, Cheryl Bomar, Powell & Mary Lynne Osteen . . . and parents. We plan weekly faith-engaging programs, mission projects, retreats and outings – all middle school youth are welcome!
SHACK ATTACK 2015! Magnify & Amplify
On Sunday afternoon, September 13, six boats launched from Morehead City carrying about 50 youth and adults for an afternoon of fun, fellowship, food and faith at Shackleford. Together we cele-brated the start of a new year of ministry for both middle and high schoolers. Waylon Bell, Coordina-tor of Youth Outreach, led us in devotions by the waters’ edge – we are here to become followers of Christ! All youth are welcome to join us!

Our Youth will host entertainment in the Fellowship Hall and a free hot dog supper will be served beginning at 5 pm. GET ANIMATED! Young Adult Small Group (The 35 and under crowd)
Do you ever feel frustrated by life? Ever wish that you had a space to talk about your faith, and ask some of those big questions? Want do get energized and animated about your faith? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions,
then we have a great small group for you! It is called the Animate series, and it is designed to get us talk-ing about our faith, practices, and the Bible, and give us a safe place to do it! Starting in October, Pastor Jason will begin this young adult small group on Monday nights at 7 pm. It will be held at the Church Campus (room a219), and will run for at least seven weeks. Each night, we will have child care (if need-ed) and snacks. If you are interested, please call the church office. or e-mail Pastor Jason [email protected].
MORE SMALL GROUPS COMING!
Our mission as Christians is to make disciples of Je-sus Christ for the transformation of the world. One of the main ways that we do this is through small groups. As Christians and Methodists this is in our very DNA. We are always trying to grow our Small Group culture. Starting in January, we will be rolling out a new way of doing small groups. This will be an open access method of doing small groups, with unlimited possibilities! Basically, we will be allowing anybody to start a small group around any topic that you are passionate about. And we will train you on how to make it a Church small group. If you enjoy playing golf, we can make that into a small group. If you are passionate about serv-ing at Martha’s Mission, we can make that into a small group. Whenever you are doing something that you are passionate about, we believe that you will be much more successful than if you are trying to be like someone else, in a small group environ-ment. All of our small groups will meet regularly and will have some aspect of worship, prayer, or Bi-ble study, each time they meet. Other than that, the possibilities about how they meet are up to you! If you have an idea about a small group you would like to host, or team with someone to host, please call the Church office, or e-mail Pastor Jason ([email protected]). Also, if you are already in a type of small group, and you are willing to invite others to join it for the glory of God and the growth of God’s church, please let us know. We plan to roll out a catalogue of Small Groups at the beginning of the 2016 year. We look forward to your participation and also the gifts you will bring to the ministry!
We are well into our second week of youth, and have already made some wonderful memories. Our Kick Off at the Cape turned into Shack Attack, due to winds, and was a truly memorable time with great friends and family. For our second meeting some of the leaders took on the youth in our “Minute to Win It” game; the leaders came in at a very close second place! Our first trip is fast upon us, as we will travel to Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, NC November 13-15 for Pilgrimage. This is a life-changing week-end event filled with amazing artists, thought pro-voking speakers, and inspiring youth leadership—all sharing moving stories and experiences that reveal the transforming love of Christ. Sponsored by the North Carolina United Methodist Conference, this weekend is for students of all denominations looking for a weekend worship experience that calls every-one to a new or stronger faith in Jesus, challenging everyone to share God’s love in word and action.

Each school year FUMC is the base camp to provide weekend food for school children whose primary source of food is the school lunch program. Backpack Blessings was started in Au-gust 2011 serving 12 fully qualified children at Morehead Pri-mary and Elementary Schools.

“A MATTER OF TREASURE”
A Generosity Quest October 25 Kick Off Sunday November 4 Begin circulating the treasure chests with pledge cards November 22 Consecration Sunday
Look for Your Treasure Chest! Beginning Wednesday November 4, treasure chests will begin circulating along neighborhood routes stopping at each house of a First United Methodist Church member or constituent. In each treasure chest you will find a pledge card marked with your name for the 2016 Mission and Ministry Budget (operating) and Capital Needs (facilities and equip-ment). Please pray that God would lead you to “lay up treasures in heaven” and make a pledge for the work of God through First UMC. It’s easy – just complete your Card, seal it in the envelope provided; then return your envelope to the treasure chest and immediately carry the chest to the next house on the route. If we are prepared and act promptly, the chests can complete the route in less than two weeks! Thanks for your faithful response and participation.
FLU SHOTS Kristen Hill, pharmacist at Walmart, will offer a Flu Shot Clinic at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, Oc-tober 17, from 10 am -2 pm in the Church Parlor (second floor at the elevator). For those with Medicare or Tricare, there is no charge. All others may receive flu shots for $25, cash or check. (If you prefer to use other insurance carriers, please visit your physician or a local pharmacy including Walmart.) Kristen is the wife of Chuck Hill who is the grandson of The Rev AP Hill who served as pastor here at First UMC, 1968-1973. Thanks Kristen for offering this service to our members and friends!
The United Methodist Men will be hosting a fundraising lunch following the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, October 11. Proceeds will be distributed to church mission related programs and local charities including Methodist Home For Children, Martha’s Mission and others. Check the bulletin for additional details.
To FUMC Scholarship Committee:
Thank you so much for the generous scholarship that you gave to me. Without that money, I would not have had the financial resources to attend my college of choice. I am very grateful and feel very loved by the wonderful people on this commit-tee. This money will not be a waste as I plan to use my talents to better serve our Lord in teaching. Thank you again for the reward and God bless.
Sincerely, Jacob Smith
Dear Friends at FUMC,
Thank you so much for the nice bookmark and card for my graduation from NC State in May. I am putting the bookmark to good use in my Bible! I also wanted to thank you for all of the thoughtful cards and gifts throughout my college career, and especially for the prayers that came with them. I always enjoy returning home to FUMC and seeing kind, familiar faces.
Sincerely, Laura Saleeby
Greetings.
While on vacation, I attended church with the McCulloughs. I wanted to thank you for your warm welcome and the gifts of information and loaf of bread.
Yours Sincerely, Barbara
Dear Church Family and FUMC Scholarship Committee,
Thank you so much for awarding me the Jacquelyn G. Eure Scholarship and for the Senior brunch, the handmade pillow, and the “Financial Success” book.
It means so much to me to be supported by my church family! I hope that as I transition into this new phase in my life at East Carolina University that you will keep me in your thoughts and prayers.
Love, Abigail Prosser 519 Greene Hall, ECU Greenville, NC 27834
We certainly enjoyed worshipping with all of you Sunday. The “semons” in all the humns are wonderful and your membership very friendly. I especially liked “Passing of the Peace” before the prelude. Hope we can come again! John and Shirley Kennedy PS Thanks for the bread—mmmmm good!
Thank you for everything you do! It means so much to us that you took time to provide lunches for the military and our regu-lar construction volunteers who are helping us build Habitat homes for families in need of adequate housing. We are so blessed to have your support in our housing mis-sion, and ask that you continue to embrace the vision of
“A world where everyone has a decent place to live.”
In Partnership, Kris Durham, Executive Director Habitat for Humanity
MEMORIALS AND HONORARIUMS
Thank you for remembering your church and its special minis-tries through your generous donations. Gifts given in honor or in memory of persons who are special to you are a wonderful way to show your appreciation for someone. Often if a ministry has been especially meaningful to a person, designating a mon-etary gift to the ministry enables it to continue and be important to others. As you read these names, you might say a prayer for their fami-lies and for the ministry the gift will support.

Letters to Our Church Family
Good Stewardship requires us to think of the future. Have your estate plan prepared now and express your good stewardship in ways that will bless your family and your church. “Later” can be too late. Don’t delay having your will drawn. Make sure your estate plans are in place so that your wishes will be carried out to benefit your family. Gifts you plan for your church through your will can help your church continue to minister and serve.
CHRISTMAS IN CRISIS ADVENT DEVOTIONAL
Once again, our church will put together an in-house advent devotional. These daily devotions during the ad-vent season include reflections on scripture, prayers, memories, poems, stories, and so much more. If you are interested in contributing an entry or would like to receive more information, please contact Dega Lancaster or Grace Mason. Entry deadline is Friday, October 30, 2015, to allow time for editing and publication. Feel free to email your entries to Dega or Grace. You may drop them by the church office attention: advent devotional, too. Dega 241-0764 [email protected] Grace 241-2539 [email protected]
