Don’t “Fall” VictimTo Seasonal Changes

Fall is the time of year that isnotoriously known for viral illnesslike the flu causing upperrespiratory disorders and diseases.Ever wonder why that is? Well, let’s take a look.

From summer to fall, weexperience climatic changes in theweather. These changes basicallyinvolve temperatures going fromwarmer to cooler. There issignificant change in barometric(air) pressure during this timeperiod.

Changes in air pressure, especially rather quick changes, can affect your body. The mostobvious of these are the discomfortor even pain you feel in your earswhen your gain or lose altituderather quickly, such as in anaircraft, or even a fast elevator thatgoes up or down several floors.

Air pressure changes can alsoaffect our bodies in other ways.Because our body is composed of alarge amount of fluids and twomajor gases (oxygen and carbondioxide), we are also affected bychanges in our environment. These changes can be eitherbeneficial or detrimental to ourhealth.

In the Eastern holistic healingarts, we deal with seasonal changesby using the theory of the “5

Elements.” This theory is basedon natural elements of the earthand their characteristic relationshipwith nature. Because we are partof nature, they affect us as well.

This theory states that theseelements can exist in a“constructive cycle” or“destructive cycle.” Based on thecycle of the relationship betweenthese elements, one can determinehow to harmoniously move fromone season to another in a healthymanner.

HEALTH TIPS:

CONTROLLING STRESS

Stress has been and continues tobe one of the most commonunderlying causes of diseases, disorders and health care issues.

As devastating as it maybecome when out of control, it isas easily placed under control bysimple and easy lifestyle changes.Yet, people find it increasinglydifficult to manage stresseffectively.

There are basically only three(3) ways to manage stress:

1 - Remove the thing that isstressing you;

2 - Remove yourself from thething that is stressing you;

3 - Change your response to thething that is stressing you.

While the first and secondoptions may not always be feasibleor practical, the third option isalways applicable for anyone.

Unchecked stress can lead tofear, anger, suffering, and distressthat can lead to disease. Diseasecan create more stress and thecycle continues.

Although the third option is themost likely option to select, it’s notan easy method to enact. There aremany reasons and “excuses” thatmay obscure an individual fromfinding success with this option.

Nonetheless, there are methodsof enacting the third option with alittle assistance from the experts inthe field of health care. Exercise, relaxation, meditation and evenhypnosis can assist one in

changing their response to stressfactors and gaining control again.

The next time that you seestress in you’re life starting to getout of control, consider these threeways of managing it. If you findthat stress is already a major factorin your life, consider seekingassistance in getting it undercontrol.

Be happy and successful. Livea long and healthy life.

HEALTHY FOODSCOLUMN

WEEDS OR HERBS?by Emily Williams

Americans are obsessed withlawns. Look on the shelves ingarden stores. Weed-N-Feed,Weed-B-Gone and Weed Not arejust a few of the weed killers foryour perfect lawn. At my newresidence, Chem/Lawn comesseveral times a year to rid ourlawns of dandelions, chickweed, etc. Sadly, we are dandelion freeand I wonder how long it will bebefore we are “people” and“animal free,” too! When theChem Lawn truck comes, I want torun to the next county for thechemicals being sprayed knock mefor a loop.

At our old residence, we notonly had an abundance ofdandelions but a treasure cove ofherbs that grow naturally and costnothing. Most lawn fanatics detestplantain but think twice beforedestroying this beneficial herb. Itcan do things grass can’t. Crushthe leaves and apply to areasdamaged by burns, stings andpoisonous bites.

Chickweed is another herbuprooted by gardeners. It, too, is ahome remedy for cuts, etc. Add toyour swabs.

My old lawn was full of whiteclover and violets. AmericanIndians made a tea fromcloverleaves for colds and coughs.Europeans made a flower tea forrheumatism and gout. The cloverflowers also attract honeybees.Right now our honeybees need allthe help they can get. Both leavesand flowers of violets can be addedto swabs. Old herbal books claimthat the flowers and leaves areantiseptic and can benefit highly-strung patients.

Look and see what you mighthave growing in your lawn. Youmaybe surprised at the benefitssome of these lawn herbs/weedscan provide.

CHANGE!by Nina J. Simmons

It is inevitable. As time goesby, we are constantly evolving justas everything around us.

This is especially true of theaging process. The painfulrealization that my body had beencompletely taken over witharthritis was a rude awakening forme. The damage to my joints wasundeniable. However, I wasdetermined to continue living anindependent life. The process todate (it has been four and a halfyears) has been physical therapy, water therapy, medications, chiropractic, etc. It was (and is)Tai Chi that has sustained me. Iam able to maintain a good qualityof life with considerably less paindespite three joint replacements inthree years.

It is that fusion of mind, bodyand spirit that gives me the willand balance to continue. Itseemed at one point that therepetition of the choreography wasjust tedious movement, but once Iconnected my breath andmeditation with the movement, Ifound my balance. I am now able

to focus and stay in the moment. This is crucial to my well being.

I will continue to be challengedby arthritis but I’m confident thatwith my Tai Chi classes, beginningwith Wu Ji and ending with theCleansing, I Will RemainIndependent and Enjoy a GoodQuality of Life!

If you suffer from chronic pain, try TAI CHI!

TAI CHI ON TUESDAYSby Lynn Kosek-Walker

The QBS Tai Chi class onTuesday mornings at theWillingboro Senior Center is morethan great exercise, it isinspirational. My husband ShifuJonathan Walker leads the classalong with the help of his groupleaders Angie Moffitt, GuyCornish, and Pat Lindsey Harvey. Ifirst began volunteering as a groupleader about two months ago afterbeing laid-off from my job.

The class has a strong coregroup of students who havestudied Tai Chi with Shifu Walkerfor nearly ten years. The class isalso the largest in our school and atone point had as many as 100people in it. While the class size isnow much smaller, new studentscontinue to join each month anddiscover the benefits that Tai Chican bring to improving theirhealth.

Shifu Walker is an inspiringteacher (That’s one of the reasonsthat I first fell in love with him!)and his students are truly amazing. Each week they walk in the doorwith smiles on their faces, ready topractice Tai Chi to receive itsbenefits. Their enthusiasm issurprising when you realize theadversity many have encountered. Some have overcome the pain ofjoint replacements. Others battlearthritis, cancer, high bloodpressure or diabetes. Whatevertheir difficulty may be, thesepeople are true achievers whowould rather take action than

simply accept the challenges oflife.

Rich Spangler uses a walkerwith a built in seat to assist himwhen he does Tai Chi. Hisdedication encourages me andreveals both the power of this artto improve health and the strengthof will that can be necessary toovercome adversity.

Couples, Walter & CarolitaLindsey and Curtis & GwenEdwards are advanced Tai Chistudents who know the majority ofthe first section of the Tai Chiform. They persevere through thechallenging postures with acheerful never-give-up attitude.

Renee Cote is also one of thesenior students who doesn’t let thedifficulties of life stop her. Shekeeps track of her progress in theclasses and can tell you, to the day,how long she has studied Tai Chi.

When I walk in the door onTuesday mornings and seeeveryone in this class I am trulyinspired. They are living proof ofwhat Tai Chi can do for anyonewho really cares about their healthand makes the effort to learn thishealing art.

Are you ready to see what TaiChi can do for you? Sign up for afree class by calling 609-915-3435and join us. We’ll greet you with asmile.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT?

Pain is a part of life. The originof the word dates back to 1250-1300. Regardless of who you are, what age you are, where you live, work or play, you most likely haveexperienced pain in your lifetime.

Pain can be physical sufferingor distress due to injury, illness orthe like. It can be a distressingsensation in a particular part ofyour body. It can be mental oremotional suffering or torment.Pain can be many different thingsto different people but it’s always atraumatic experience.

When painful or traumaticexperience occurs, it often leaves a“signature or impression” on thebrain. This signature orpsychological footprint can affectactions and/or reactions to futureencounters of that particularexperience. A physiologicalexample would be if an individualwere injured in an automobileaccident and thereafter finds italmost impossible or very difficultto travel in an automobile again.Vehicular travel now becomesvery stressful because of the pastexperience.

There are various methods inwhich to deal with pain.Meditation, breathing techniques, distraction, pharmacology, biofeedback and hypnotherapy arejust a few of these methods.

It really doesn’t make muchdifference which method youchoose as long as you choose onethat best fits you. Understandingpain, its effects and outcome canonly help to increase yourcomprehension of pain and how todeal with it in a healthy manner.

The next time you experiencepain in your life, look at it throughdifferent eyes with an optimisticview knowing that you canmanage pain no matter what itssource or effect.

All that you have to do is askfor help!

Does That Make Sense?Paperback, by Shifu Jonathan B. Walker, PhD

$19.95

Excerpt:“Most people can’t define success for themselves because they are looking in thewrong place for it. We generally have our sights set on the success that someoneelse has achieved and want it for our own”. . . . . “We each have a gift. All that youhave to do is identify what your gift is”. . . . . “Once you’ve identified your gift, youneed to capitalize on it”. . . . . “Does that make sense?”

DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? is a no-frills, thought provoking, interactive, bookthat is compact, direct and to the point. It illustrates how people can empowerthemselves to achieve any goal that they desire and obtain success in life.

It is the result of years of personal research that Shifu Walker has compiledthrough teaching scenarios at schools, colleges, community centers, and businessesin public and private presentations. While consulting with his fellow colleaguesaround the world, he discovered common denominators that are stumbling blocksto achieving success in one’s life. His personal life experiences also played a rolein revealing these same obstacles.

Unlike most self-help books, “Does That Make Sense?” depicts how you can findsuccess based on your strengths not the strengths of the author. It is a book thatanyone can pick up, read and find a path to success in their life based on what theywant.

With highlights on simplicity, this book “packs a punch” and “drives home” theimportant aspects for self-empowerment!
