Crowdculture.se A market place for participatory culture

What would the financial system for cultural productions look

like, if we were to create it today?

Crowdculture.se establishes an accessible digital infrastructure for micro financing of cultural productions. This is a financial model that supports cultural innovation and market development of Sweden's cultural life. In it’s form, Crowdculture.se provides a market place for an alternative and personally engaging cultural economy, that today has no counterpart- a similar micro-financing project with a cultural focus suitable for Scandinavian conditions is missing. At Crowdculture.se cultural producers, financiers and consumers can contribute to the realization of projects that fall outside the cultural establishment's immediate taste, and thus stimulate the growth of a more vibrant cultural life as well in the city, as on the web.

A vibrant cultural repertoire requires parallel infrastructures!

The project Crowdculture.se was created as an attempt to fill the hole the dysfunctional market economy with it's inherent logic has left in today's cultural arena. This is a time when most other markets daily develop new ways to utilize crowd sourcing and user-generated knowledge as a support, in order to secure that their products correlate with the market's actual demands. A need that reveals itself, and which the project Crowdculture aims to meet, is an open platform that allows the cultural public to engage in the micro-financing of a thriving cultural scene in their own city, accessible and open for new cultural productions. Crowculture.se invites the culture economy to open up for all the possibilities the internet is offering, and secures that that a rich cultural life not merely excist for, but also because of, the incredible users!

Crowdculture.se is a growing community for cultural producers and their audiences.

The community Crowdculture.se serves as meeting place for cultural producers, financiers, consumers and institutions. The platform allows producers, which may be an individual idea agent, as well as a more established ensemble, group or association, to share a project description of the production which they wish to realize. All suggested productions together form a sort of ”production library”. Another group of members on the platform are the Cultural consumers. Each active member is paying a small monthly fee that gets lavrege by an investment by the local govenrnment. In exchange to the investment the participant

governs a vote that she can place on the production in the library she would like to see realized. This vote is an investment right, as the vote carries a certain value per second. The value is determined by the platforms over all economy, divided by the amount of active users and seconds, in a real-time calculated economical flow. A production receives a sum of money equivalent to the added value of the votes she gets in each counted second. When a production has received the number of votes over time that is need for realization, the money is paid to the producer, so that her production can be implemented within a desired or appropriate institution. In this way, the platform provides the financial tools that enable both cultural innovation, market development of Sweden's cultural landscape and the opening of the institutional arena for others than those who currently work within them.

The system enables a cost effective distribution of cultural resources and also offers

the city audience a democratic range of cultural alternatives.

• Crowdculture.se is using the Internet's potential to delegate the decision-making of cultural financing to those who actually consume the cultural productions. • Crowdculture.se allows all the city's consumers of cultural productions to contribute to the realization of projects that fall outside the cultural establishment's immediate taste, and thus contribute to a more diverse cultural life in the city!

Calculations:

The economic model is best suited for the financing of projects with a budget ranging from € 100 - € 1500 . Two sample calculations on how fast a project can be realized within the system: • The Blue Theatre is seeking co-funding for a theatre production. The have applied for € 2000, which will be used for building the scenography. If they receive an average of 60 votes, it takes them 65 days to reach the requested amount. • Marion is a dancer and have had contact with a cellist from Norway. Along with a well- known animator they are now looking for € 8000 o be able to produce a dance film and publish it on a Web Gallery. They get 450 votes and it takes them 35 days before they can start the project.

The project is run by Fabel Communications in cooperation with selected experts.

Crowdculture.se is initiated by Fabel Communication situated in Stockholm. It is realized in collaboration with, among others, SICS (Swedish Institute of Computer Science) and expertise within law, mathematics and co-creational culture. In the year 09/10 we work to create a basic model of the economic structure and interaction design. The project has received economical support by the fund for Innovative Culture and VINNOVA (The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems). During the test phase in 2010, the project will focus on production within "performance art".
