Educational Program Objectives The purpose of this project is to provide a performing arts addition with flexible multipurpose learning spaces that can be combined into a single large performance space. The building will be in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and will provide the required teaching spaces and support spaces for the school programs. The chorale and instrumental music rooms will be designed as add-alternates. The following are some of the key elements of the project design:
• The flexible 425 seat performance space will have theatrical lighting, sound system, sprung wood floor and be acoustically designed for multiple performance types.
• When not in performance mode, the theater is divided with acoustical operable partitions and seats retract to provide three to four multipurpose performance/learning spaces.
• The chorale and instrumental music rooms are acoustically designed and isolated. • Natural daylighting maximized for student and staff occupied spaces. • The addition is sited along the main corridor of the existing school and placed out front to announce the defining purpose of a
creative and performing arts school. • The addition is connected to a small portion of the existing school to minimize impact to school operations during construction. • The exterior design clearly identifies the addition as a performance space.

Site Design Site Features: A. Mario Loiederman Middle School is situated on a 17.08 acre site at 12701 Goodhill Road in Silver Spring, Maryland. The school property is bounded on the south by Weller Road, on the west by Goodhill Road, on the north by Dean Road and on the east by Weller Road Elementary School. The student drop-off, service and parking area are located off an entrance drive from Weller Road. The bus loop is accessed from Goodhill Road. The bus loop and student drop-off are currently and will remain separated. The portable classrooms will be relocated because their existing locations conflict with the area of the proposed addition. Six new ADA parking spaces will be provided along the entrance drive adjacent to the new Performance Arts addition entry.

Building Design General Description: The proposed addition is a tall one-story, steel framed structure with brick and metal panel veneer over concrete masonry exterior walls. The addition is located on the south face of the existing school, near the entrance to the site. The addition is connected by corridors to the two ends of the existing music wing. The new building contains a performance space, dressing rooms, set construction room, box office, lobby, several multipurpose performance rooms, storage and an office. Two multipurpose performance rooms contain retractable seating and are separated with operable acoustic partitions. When the partitions retract a large single performance space seating 425 spectators is created. Technology/ Audio-Visual Systems: The music rooms, designed as add-alternates, will contain a teaching wall typical to classrooms. They will include an interactive teaching monitor networked to the teacher’s computer and a multimedia station. Students will have the ability to connect to a wireless network available throughout the Performing Arts addition. The performance space will have dimmable theatrical lighting, a sound system and projection system.

Sustainability The proposed project will be designed and constructed with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. Architecture and engineering systems will align with Montgomery County Public Schools sustainability principles to ensure long term operational effectiveness. The project will meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. The new facility will also be in compliance with the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IGCC).
Key Features related to the sustainability include the following:
• Stormwater: Managing stormwater to reduce runoff quantity and to improve quality. • Using highly reflective roof surfaces to reduce the heat island effect and heat gain to the building. • Water Conservation: Installing water-conserving, low-flow plumbing fixtures. • Energy Conservation: Optimizing energy performance by providing an energy efficient building envelope, lighting systems, and
heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. • Construction Waste Management: Diverting construction waste from landfills and recycling the materials. • Indoor Air Quality: Following an indoor air quality management plan and utilizing low-emitting building materials. • Thermal Comfort: Providing a high level of occupant control over individual lighting and thermal comfort to provide a better
indoor environment. • Regional and Recycled Materials: Utilizing construction materials that are manufactured from recycled products and that are
regionally manufactured. • Implementing a Green Housekeeping plan. • Minimizing background noise level from HVAC systems in performance and learning spaces and control reverberation time
with sufficient sound absorptive materials.
