FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH DECEMBER 17, 2014 WINCHESTER, VA.
VOL. 75 NO. 12
A Loving & Caring Church Transforming God’s Vision Into Action
The angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary, “a virgin pledged to be married to a man
named Joseph, a descendant of David,” is at the heart of Luke’s beautiful
Christmas story. Mary was told she would conceive and bear a son to be named
Jesus who would “save His people from their sin.”
An innocent teenager, the peasant girl couldn't understand the angel’s announcement and said, “How can this be?”
Luke seconds Gabriel's response and Mary’s acceptance by faith of that which she could not yet comprehend. “I am the
Lord’s servant,” Mary said. “May it be to me as you have said.”
Mary was “highly favored” by God and given the opportunity to participate in the redemption of His people. But
her “favored” status also placed her under a cloud of suspicion and must have raised serious questions in Joseph's mind. The
looks and whispers of the neighbors in Nazareth were no doubt painfully real as the months of her pregnancy passed. Then
in Bethlehem, circumstances necessitated her delivery in a stable-cave where she “gave birth to her firstborn, a son…” The
journey to Egypt was necessary to save Jesus’ life from Herod, who was furious because he had been deceived. The family
later returned to Nazareth where Mary, Joseph and Jesus remained until Jesus began His public ministry.
Mary’s call from God had both special privilege and responsibility. She often pondered the events surrounding
Jesus’ birth, “wondering what they meant,” and the words of Simeon to her when Jesus was presented in the temple, “a
sword will pierce your heart.” She never understood the seemingly strange thoughts and actions of her Messiah-Son until
after His death and resurrection.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, dramatically illustrates in her life the paradox of blessedness. She stands apart from all
other women in giving birth to Jesus our Savior. She has been memorialized in art, music and literature, and rightly so. But
the other side of the paradox is that she was involved in much suffering and pain that she otherwise would have been spared.
Her “blessedness” was both her cause of suffering and her crown of joy.
William Barclay in his commentary on this passage in Luke has observed: “It is the paradox of blessedness that it
confers on a person at one and the same time the greatest joy in all the world and the greatest task in all the world.” A gifted
preacher in another time expressed the same insight with the words, “Jesus Christ came not to make life easy, but to make
men (persons) great.”
The clear teaching of Biblical faith is that true blessedness is always a paradox. To be chosen by God means to be
favored for service in His kingdom and to make the necessary commitments and sacrifices on which that service is depend-
ent. This Christmas, may we hear and heed the angelic message given to Mary long ago: “There is nothing that God cannot
do.” From the One who issues the call also comes the strength to fulfill it.
Special Christmas blessings to each of you! -George Fletcher

A Memorandum from the Stewardship and Finance Committee
To First Baptist Church Members:
The Stewardship and Finance Committee believes that you, as a member of our Church, would
want to know about the possibility of a projected shortfall for 2014. Based on the year-to-date
financials through October 2014, and projecting the same rate of revenue and expenses for the
rest of the year, our Church would have a deficit of $47,677.
Based on past experience, we realize that the rates are unlikely to continue at the same pace. Indeed,
December has usually been a time of increased giving by members of our Church. However, with a
possible shortfall as large as projected, December giving may not otherwise be adequate to cover a deficit of
this size.
The Church budget was honed to rational and non-exorbitant operating expenses. We believe that the budget
was structured fairly and conservatively for the benefits of our many First Baptist-Christian
responsibilities.
Please pray for guidance about what part you can play in helping our Church meet our expenses for the year.
You could give a “Fifty-Third Sunday” donation; that is, an “Extra Week Challenge” to give one extra
offering equal to your normal weekly giving. Or you might be led to provide a “Harvest Offering:” a special
gift over and above your regular giving. Perhaps your Sunday School class might give an amount. Any
donated amount should be contributed prior to the end of 2014.
The Stewardship and Finance Committee would appreciate any prayers, suggestions, or donations. Feel free
to contact one of the members of the committee if you would like to discuss this matter further: Jim
Calloway, Richard Edwards, John Riley, Elaine MacIsaac, Gary Sibert, or Gene Comstock.
Thank You!

Can you believe 2014 is nearly over? This year has been a year of many changes. Exciting things are happening. Our
new water system building is coming along. The building structure has been erected, the tanks have been set in and the
trusses and decking have been placed. It is wonderful to see the progress.
Jeff and I would like to extend a special thank you to the HRR Committee. There is a lot of work to do and with their
commitment, we have begun checking items off. We are excited to see what the New Year is going to bring and
committed to making it another great year.
Our family wishes you all a Very Merry Christmas! In this season, remember that the greatest gift has already been given to
you!
In His Service,
Jeff, Melissa, Cody and Kristy

Winter Bible Study on Jesus Christ
The Life and Teachings of Jesus will be the focus of the Thursday Morning Bible Study this winter. Written by
John Stott, one of the most beloved and respected Bible teachers of the last half century, this study is designed to
explore the Christ of the New Testament. Participants will discover Him as the proper object of worship, witness,
and hope. The 13-session study will meet from 10:00 to 11:30 each Thursday, beginning January 8th, in the lower
auditorium. Participants will be asked to pay $3.00 for the study guide. To pre-register, please call the church
office (662-5367) or study leader Bob Stainback (722-2006) by Friday, January 2nd.
Church members needing firewood can
call HRR Caretakers, Jeff and Melissa
Engler at (540) 662-9004, to request
location and permission to cut
wood. Please leave the ash trees at the
Ridge in order to control the Asian Long
Horned beetle or White Spotted Sawyer bugs at a
central location.
The policy is to cut one load for the retreat and two
loads for yourself. Please leave the HRR load at the
wood pile in front of the tractor shed, unless the
caretakers request otherwise. Any questions can be
addressed to Jim Christiansen (540) 667-3873.
Please be careful out there.
First Baptist is hosting a Blood Drive
sponsored by the Red Cross on Friday,
January 16th, 2015 in the CEB. Put that
date on your calendar and plan to
sign-up and be a donor. We need at
least 25 - 30 donors. All blood types
are needed. Each donation helps to save
three lives. The total time required is
one hour. Sign-up sheets are in the
New Narthex or you may call the
church office.
Need to e-mail a FBC Staff
member? Recently with the ‘new’ website we have
also assigned new e-mail addresses for

Online Tithing and Giving
-Do you ever forget your offering envelope or leave your checkbook at home?
-Do you ever miss a week of giving because of illness or absence?
-Does the offertory take you by surprise…every week?
Because we know that it can be hard to remember to give, and in an effort to make contributions easier
and more convenient, First Baptist began offering safe and secure electronic giving through our website
in December. Many of you have indicated interest in this option, but we would like to provide more details
as you decide whether online giving is right for you.
-Online giving can be used to make a one-time gift if you have missed a Sunday, or can be used to set up
automatic, regular contributions.
-You must designate your gifts by using a drop-down box in the online menu. The first option is Budget
giving.
-If you choose, you can continue to receive offering envelopes or you can discontinue your envelopes by
contacting the church office.
-Our online giving is safe and secure using a payment partner, Vanco Services. You may setup an online
account and begin to give at your convenience. The link and more information is located on the church
website at: fbcwinc.org.
-If you would like to use online giving, but feel that you would also like to place something in the offering
plate, we have placed laminated ‘markers’ in the pews that may be placed in the offering plate to indi-
cate that you gave online.
More questions? We are happy to help. Please contact the Church Office at 540-662-5367 or via email:
Tie Publication Schedule
We are continuing with a monthly publication schedule of the TIE which significantly reduces communication costs. The website and online cal-
endar will continually be updated and bulletin announce-ments will be updated each week. Each Tie will be a calendar Tie for the subsequent month and will be published later in the month. February Calendar Tie — January 21st.
A REMINDER FOR CONTRIBUTIONS IN 2014
Offering envelopes and other contributions need to be into the
Church Office by
December 31st to receive credit for them on your 2014
Statement. Please be faithful to your commitment to the
ministries of First Baptist Church.
Thank you for your support for the 2014 Church Budget.

Family New Year’s resolutions! New Year’s resolutions tend to be
written by one person. It becomes a list of individual goals that fall
by the wayside before January is up. Try making a New Year’s
resolution list with your family! It does not need to be long or fancy,
keep it simple! You might make a goal of having a family game
night once a month or bake special treats for your neighbors and
teachers. Maybe visit an elderly family member one extra time!
Work together to maintain your home & create an atmosphere you
can all enjoy. Do what works for your family!
The school-agers who participated in the Thanksgiving
dinner did a wonderful job, making us all smile!
All of our Christmas pageant participants did a
fantastic job at the pageant Dec. 10th! They adapted
well when things did not go according to plan and
most importantly they all had fun!
Thanks to Santa Claus for coming to our Christmas
party, you made our day!
