The building is currently undergoing a full, sympathetic refurbishment to provide one of central London’s truly rare opportunities.

The Old Sessions House which is set on the west side of Clerkenwell Green has stood for 240 years as a London landmark with its bright Portland stone facade, detailed carvings and crown glass windows. The exterior’s original splendour is meticulously being restored and repaired with the guidance of a team of some of the UK’s leading conservation experts. The building was originally built as a public Courthouse and now after over 100 years of being unavailable for public access, this Grade II* listed building is being re-imagined as an all-day destination. A mixture of uses will invite different occupiers to create a dynamic location - a hub for food, drink and recreation for the local businesses, residents as well as becoming an exciting destination for all of London. The main building, directly accessed from two impressive entrances on Clerkenwell Green and one on Clerkenwell Road, includes two magnificent old courtrooms, former judges’ rooms as well as the building’s perhaps most striking feature - the grand central dome modelled after the Pantheon in Rome. This space will play host to a principal tenant, who can create a dynamic headquarters or a members’ club that will be complemented by the unique space and the surrounding neighbourhood.

The ground floor, which once housed prison cells, will be remodelled to host an eclectic mix off food and drink vendors – restaurants, bakeries, bars, delis or markets – businesses that desire an inspiring venue. The 7 entrances with outdoor patios will invite the public and vitalize each side of the surrounding area of the building. On the top floor and roof level, the former Judges’ Dining Room will reopen as an intimate restaurant and wine bar – a place to sip a dark cocktail and catch up with friends against a backdrop the historic, faded grandeur of the Victorian dining room.

All together it will become a building unlike any other, one that combines the allure of the past with the vibrance of contemporary Clerkenwell.

Design & architecture

Many of the building’s historic features are being preserved, and the patina of aged stone and plasterwork is a reminder of the building’s long, storied history. The principal floors stretch over three levels, characterised by a 20 meter-tall grand dome and a main courtroom. The walls that once partitioned the main courtroom have been removed, creating a magnificent space with a 7-meter-high glass screen, 9-meter-high ceilings, a raised viewing gallery and original pine floors.

A second courtroom with 8-meter-high ceilings sits across from the first, the sun shining through its original crown glass windows. Small and medium-sized rooms are mixed in, each with its own personality and historic architectural details.

Old Sessions House is being reimagined as an all-day destination for working,

drinking and dining. A curated mix of people and brands will fill the elegant space – and imbue it with their passion.

The intricate and aged details that fill the halls of Old Sessions House give it a charm unlike any other space. The traditional Georgian and Victorian architecture, and considered details provide a backdrop that makes a sophisticated statement for any business.

The central dome is the centrepiece of the building. Surrounded by stone columns and a sweeping balcony that encircles the space, it embodies the building’s grandeur. The cast iron railings are original, as are the authentic 19th century hallway lanterns and a signature Georgian colour palette of stone and soft grey.

The smaller details have been painstakingly replicated in keeping with the building’s unique opulence. Handmade doors mirror the style of the originals. Custom-made Victorian and Georgian fireplaces dot the space. And touches of antique brass and bronze are used throughout – on hinges, door handles, radiator valves and electrical sockets – showing respect for the building’s character, while using thoroughly modern functionality.

With the kind of traditional craftsmanship embodied by two elegant King George III-style chandeliers that hang in the courtrooms, Old Sessions House is an icon, reimagined for a modern era.

A VILLAGE IN CENTRAL LONDON

Old Sessions House is located at 22 Clerkenwell Green in the heart of Clerkenwell. The area was traditionally associated with breweries, distilleries, the printing industry and highly skilled crafts such as watch and clock making. Currently, with more creative business per square mile than anywhere else in the world, Clerkenwell is London’s hub for creativity with a strong sense of community.

Clerkenwell is certainly one of central London’s most exciting urban villages. Each spring, the neighbourhood hosts Clerkenwell Design Week, a key event in the global design calendar at which brands like Herman Miller, Vitra and Zaha Hadid open their showrooms and exhibit their designs. In 2015, more than 35,000 people attended this three-day festival.

The neighbourhood

Old Sessions House is located around the corner from the exceptionally well-connected Farringdon Station, which will be the flagship for Crossrail opening in 2018. When fully open, an estimated 140 trains per hour will flow through the Farringdon interchange, and it will be the only station through which passengers will be able to access all three networks – making it one of Britain’s busiest train stations.

Crossrail is estimated to bring an additional 1.5 million people within 45 minutes’ commuting distance of London’s key business districts.

Currently, transport links are excellent: Farringdon Station (National Rail, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines), Chancery Lane (Central line) and King’s Cross (National Rail, Eurostar service, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, Circle, Northern, Victoria and Piccadilly lines). The Thameslink rail service provides quick and regular service to Brighton via Gatwick Airport, and Bedford via Luton Airport.

Old Sessions House finished construction in 1779 and opened in 1782 under the name of Middlesex Sessions House as a courthouse. The Palladian-style building was grand, with a façade of solid Portland stone and lonic columns – some of the most expensive materials of the time. For the next 70 years, its coffered dome – built in the style of the Roman Pantheon – saw hundreds of legal cases, and prisoners marched down to the basement cells.

The scene was just as lively outside the building. Literature’s mischievous Oliver Twist was caught and taken to the magistrate in 1837 for the skilful pickpocket work of his friend, the Artful Dodger.

In 1863, Farringdon opened as the terminus of the Metropolitan Railway, the world’s first underground subway, bringing with it a flurry of activity from the other end of the line at Paddington.

And in 1902, Vladimir Lenin and his wife arrived just across the street and made the Edwardian house at 37a Clerkenwell Green the publishing headquarters of the pre-Bolshevik newspaper that would bring Lenin’s ideas to thousands of Russians. Today, the house is the Karl Marx Memorial Library, with Lenin’s original office preserved inside.

HISTORY

In the early 20th century, the court was relocated and in 1931 the building became the headquarters of Avery Scales, a manufacturer of weighing machines. In 1950, the building was included on a national list of buildings of special architectural and historic interest despite the fact that over the next 30 years, Clerkenwell would go through a period of decline. With the lag in traditional industries, the building became a Masonic Lodge—yet its historical significance through this turbulent time did not go unnoticed. In 1994, Old Sessions House became a Grade II* listed building, a designation awarded to less than five per cent of buildings in the UK that pays homage to its unique architecture. And today that grandeur is being reinstated, bringing this storied landmark into a new era.
