Bitte anschnallen! – Was ist ein Virtuose?

Was ist ein Virtuose? Ein Musiker, der sich insgeheim wünscht, schneller als alle anderen spielen zu können – und das ohne vernünftigen Grund.

Natürlich ist die Wahrheit ein bisschen komplizierter. Ein wahrer Virtuose treibt zugegebenermaßen das Tempo zwar gern auf die Spitze, aber seine wahre Kunst ist die Fähigkeit, das Publikum von der ersten bis zur letzten Note in seinen Bann zu ziehen – egal ob er schnell oder langsam spielt.

Bekannte Virtuosenstücke zu spielen kann allerdings ziemlich einschüchternd sein: Man wird schnell mit vielen anderen Musikern verglichen und oft stehen statt der eigenen Leistung die Fehler im Mittelpunkt. Nicht selten sieht man sich selbst in genau diesem Licht.

Diese Situation hat mich dazu angeregt, meine eigenen Virtuosenstücke zu kom-ponieren – so konnte ich in Konzerten auch meine eigenen Fehler machen, ohne ständigen Vergleichen ausgesetzt zu sein. Denn wer kann sich schon ein Urteil darüber erlauben, wie ich meine eigenen Stücke darbiete? Mein Wunsch ist es, dass du diese Stücke ganz nach deinen persönlichen Vorstellungen interpretierst und sie dir so „zu eigen“ machst. Scheue dich dabei auch nicht, Änderungen vorzunehmen, egal ob diese die Rhythmik, Artikulation oder sogar die Noten oder die Form betreffen. Ich bin fest davon überzeugt, dass jeder wahre Virtuose sich ein Stück immer zu eigen macht – und genau das wünsche ich mir von dir, wenn du diese Stücke spielst. Und habe keine Sorge, dass du dabei etwas „vermasseln“ könntest, sondern mache das einfach zum Teil deiner persönlichen Interpretation. Meiner Ansicht nach gibt es keine Fehler, sondern nur Gelegenheiten! Bei einigen Stücken habe ich mich dafür entschieden, moderne Virtuosentechniken für die Violine einzubauen, wie den sogenannten „Chop“ – eine perkussive Spielweise, deren Ausführung du dir auf YouTube oder einer meiner Aufnahmen anhören kannst. Ich habe die vorliegenden Stücke bei orlando records auf CD eingespielt, um zu zei-gen, wie sie meiner Vorstellung nach klingen sollen – du kannst diese Aufnahmen aber auch einfach ignorieren.

What is a virtuoso? A musician with the secret desire to play things faster than anyone else for absolutely no reason.

Of course it is a little more complex than that. What drives a true virtuoso is partly the thrill of speed for one thing, but also having the ability to pull the audience in and make them hang onto your every note, be it fast or slow.

However, playing well-known virtuoso works can be quite intimidating. One is easily compared to so many others and judged by one’s mistakes rather than virtues, not least of all – by oneself.

The solution for me was to write my own virtuoso pieces so that in performance, I could make my own mistakes without anyone judging me. After all, they are my own pieces! What I would love, most of all, is if you could make these works ‘your own pieces’. Feel free to alter them in any way, be it the rhythm, articulation or even the notes and form.

It’s my belief that every true virtuoso makes a piece his or her own – and that is precisely the way to go when using this book. Above all, feel free to ‘screw up’ and make that part of your interpretation. There are no mistakes – only opportunities!

In some pieces I have also chosen to add more modern forms of virtuosity in the form of percussive violin playing, using a so-called ‘chop’. The way to perform that can be easily looked up online, on YouTube or heard on my recording.

I have recorded these pieces on CD (orlando records) to show how I imagine they should sound but please feel free to ignore these recordings if you would rather.

Qu’est-ce qu’un virtuose ? Un musicien qui couve, sans raison aucune, le secret désir de jouer plus vite que tous les autres. Bien sûr, c’est un peu plus compliqué que ça. Les vrais virtuoses sont mus en partie par l’ivresse de la vitesse, mais aussi par l’envie de captiver le public, de le voir suspendu à chaque note – qu’elle soit rapide ou lente. Or, les œuvres virtuoses connues ont quelque chose d’intimidant. On se retrouve facilement comparé à tous ceux qui les ont jouées avant, et jugé sur ses fautes plutôt que sur ses qualités, surtout … par soi-même. La solution, pour moi, a consisté à écrire mes propres pièces virtuoses. En concert, je peux me tromper sans que personne ne me juge, puisque ce sont mes pièces à moi ! Et ce qui me ferait le plus plaisir, ce serait qu’elles deviennent « vos pièces à vous ». Vous êtes parfaitement libres de les modifier, que ce soit sur le plan du rythme, de l’articulation ou même des notes et de la forme. Je suis convaincu que tous les vrais virtuoses s’approprient les œuvres qu’ils jouent. C’est justement ainsi qu’il faut prendre ce recueil. Surtout, n’ayez pas peur de vous « planter » et d’intégrer l’erreur à votre interprétation. Il n’y a pas de fautes, que des occasions ! J’ai aussi choisi d’utiliser dans certaines pièces une forme de virtuosité plus moderne : une technique de violon percussive, appelée « chop ». Vous en trouverez facilement des exemples en ligne, sur YouTube, ou en écoutant mes enregistrements. J’ai enregistré ces pièces sur CD, chez orlando records, pour montrer comment elles devraient sonner selon moi. Surtout, n’hésitez pas à ne pas vous en inspirer.
