ADITYA RISTIANANG, K2211001 How to Teach Speaking Using World
Style Debate.First Consultant: Prof. Dr. H. Joko Nurkamto, M.Pd. Second
Consultant : Drs. Siswantoro, M.Hum. Thesis: Surakarta. English Education
Department, Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University, 2016.
The objectives of this research are: (1) to describethe implementation of World
Style debate to teach speaking; and (2) to explain how the World Style debate
improve students’ speaking competence in Senior High School. The research is a
result of library research entitled “How to Teach Speaking Using World Style
Debate”. The data of the research obtained frombooks and scientific journals which
are explained World Style debate or British Parliamentary debate. The research data
were analyzed by using qualitative techniques through critical analysis.
The research findings prove that the World Style debate is useful to
teachspeaking, the benefit of World Style debate is viewed from several dimensions.
First, World Style debate can improve students’ speaking ability, Second, World
Style debate can improve the students’ involvement in learning process, Third, World
Style debate also promote students’ critical thinking skill, Fourth, World Style debate
can increase the motivation and excitement, Fifth, World Style debate can help the
students to improve subject knowledge and easier to understand the material, Sixth,
World Style debate can develop the students’ oral communication skill.
World Style debate is a collaborative teaching strategy that benefits for students
achievement and for students’ interest. As the suggestion, to develop the students’
speaking ability teacher should apply Wolds Style debate as an interesting activity to
teach speaking skill.

Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University, 2016.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) untuk mendeskripsikan implementasi debate
World Style untuk mengajarke mampuan berbicara; dan (2)untuk menjelaskan
bagaimana debate World Style meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa Sekolah
Menengah Atas. Penenlitian ini adalah hasil dari kajian pustaka berjudul “How to
Teach Speaking Using World Style Debate”. Data dari penelitian ini didapat dari
beberapa buku dan referensi-referensi ilmiah yang menjelaskan tentang debat World
Style atau debat British Parliamentary, data dianalisa menggunakan tehnik kualitatif
melalui analisis kritis.
Penelitian mendapatkan bahwa debat World Style bermanfaat untuk mengajar
kemampuan berbicara, manfaat tersebut dilihat dari beberapa aspek. Pertama, debat
dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicarasiswa, kedua, debat dapat meningkatkan
keterlibatan siswa dalam proses pembelajaran, ketiga debat juga meningkatkan
kemampuan berfirkir kritis, keempat, deba tmeningkatkan motivasi dan keaktifan
siswa dalam mengikuti proses pembelajaran, kelima, debat membantu siswa untuk
mengembangkan pengetahuan dan mempermudah untuk mengerti materi belajar,
keenam, debat dapat mengembangkan kemampuan berkomunikasi secara langsung.
Debat World Style adalah strategi pembelajaran kolaboratif yang bermanfaat untuk
prestasi dan minatsiswa. Sebagai saran, untuk mengembangkan kemampua
nberbicarasiswa, guru diharapkan menerapkan debat World Style secara menarik
untuk mengajarkan kemampuan berbicara.
