Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
This shot is a mid length
shot. It allows the audience
to establish the lead singer.
We have used graffiti for the
background as it is the theme we have continuously used in our music video and ancillary task.
Typically the alternative rock genre features the
band in the music video. The band often directly addresses the camera and uses a lot
of lip syncing.
We also thought by positioning the lead singer in front of the graffiti, which reads ‘No talent’ , adds a ironic aspect to the shot. We found from our research that the band ‘Fall Out Boy’ tend not to take themselves seriously in their music videos.
This shot also allows the audience to see the band members costumes. The hoodies create the sense
of rebellion which is a common theme amongst the alternative rock genre and also fits well with the
theme of graffiti.
This clip shows all of the band
members on a platform with their
instruments, appearing to be
singing live.
We used this shot to establish the location. The
alternative rock genre often tends to take place in an obscure location, this is
generally because they want to appear edgier.
This shot focuses on the graffiti.
It fits with the alternative rock genre and also establishes an iconography for
the band.
The digipak and the magazine advert both heavily feature graffiti
which was important as it relates with the music video and the audience are able to associate
the video with the ancillary texts.
The particular motif we used in both the music
video and ancillary task was graffiti.
We used an overlay of clips to create a
distorted effect.
This shot shows that we are
conforming to the conventions of the
alternative rock genre.
This shot is a close up of a
band members instrument.
Within the rock genre, there is often several shots of the bands instruments,
bringing the talent to the audiences attention. Therefore we have used a lot of close up shots within our video. This also
advertises the bands talent to the audience which will help to also promote any live
shows or concerts the hold.
We followed the conventions of the alternative
rock genre quite closely for our
magazine advert. We used
the contrast between the
light and dark of the wall to mimic
the title. We found that ‘Fall Out Boy’ rarely
feature themselves on
the advert so we used the theme of graffiti instead as it fits with the
bands conventional
look.
We found during research that almost all artists have the same image on both the magazine
advert and digipak . This is so the audience is able to easily identify the bands brand.
This shot shows the lead singer under a bridge. We
used natural lighting strategically to create a
silhouette effect.
The lighting in this varies from dark to a brighter and more natural light. This is used to help reflect the mood and tone of the
lyrics.
This shot shows the band participating in a flower fight. When researching we found
a video, 30 seconds to mars- up in the air, which featured a coloured flower
fight.
We found that it looked really effective and fight
with the aspect of creating a fun feel to
the video. Therefore we decided to incorporate it
into our own video.
We have used the same colours through
the digipak. The colours are consistent with the magazine advert and the music video; the
colour was taken from the graffiti in the music
video.
We used individual shots of the band members, as well as a group shot. These are often
used on digipak’s so the audience can picture who
the band is.
The font we have used on the album is also used on the magazine advert to establish the bands
brand. The font used is styled like writing that you may see at a carnival. We used it because it is fun
and mirrors the video videos theme of the boys ‘messing around’.
We used this low angle
shot to add variety to the shot styles in
the video.
This mid shot shows the
whole band in a conventional ‘boy band’
stance.
We found that many videos used a variety of camera angles to keep the audience
interested throughout the video.
According to Andrew Goodwin this shot is mostly
used to ‘sell the artist’. It promotes the band as a whole from the use of
central framing .
We used natural lighting for this shot. We found
this challenged the conventions of the genre
as many videos are lit artificially.
