News from the Career RoomNetworking is a skill that, like any other needs to be developed. In today’s competitive job market having a solid network of friends, neighbors, parents and your parents friends helping you look for either a part time after school job, that summer job your parents tell you to get, or after graduation, finding that “first” professional job has never been harder. I have taken excerpts from the below article to gear it towards high school students.

NETWORKING- Kelly EggersThe Wall Street Journal Digital Network

Have a Solid Introduction

As most know, first impressions count heavily. Make sure your attire, atti-tude and overall appearance are the best possible before introducing your-self to someone.

Spend More Time Listening Than Talking

In this case, the old adage is true: People were given two ears and one mouth, and you should use them proportionately. "Just like in the dating world, you should spend more time listening to and understanding the per-son in front of you than talking about yourself," says Mark Jeffries, a busi-ness communications consultant and author of What's Up With Your Hand-shake?. "Once you have truly understood what drives this person, then you can introduce yourself and tell your own stories in a way that best fits their specific needs."

Avoid Being Socially Inept

You should maintain some normal social constructs, such as where you direct your eyes and how closely you stand to people. Looking from some-one's eyes to the middle of their forehead is professional, versus a more social gaze of eyes-to-mouth, says Goman. You should also try to keep an arm's length away from anyone you're talking to, says Misner.

Follow Up and Through

Perhaps the "Cardinal Rule" of networking is that once you've planted the seeds of a new relationship, you must follow up to maintain it. Whether it's a business referral, job lead, or a professional connection, get in touch – within 24 hours – to say you enjoyed meeting them.

"No one owes you anything, so you need to be as ingratiating as you can," says Glickman. People who have taken the time to speak with you and pro-vide you with connections or guidance deserve a thank you. "Assume that you can learn from everyone. They might not be the right person, but they might know someone who you might want to be in touch with."

It's also critical to reach out to anyone a connection refers you to. "People hate it when they give someone a referral and the person never bothers to follow up on it," says Misner. If you don't, it makes two parties look bad, he says – you, since you didn't follow through on a potential lead, and the per-son who referred you, since they recommended you as a reliable resource. Always be sure to thank your network and keep in touch!

If they have not already created an ac-count with PARCHMENT, please have them do so. A final transcript will be sent to the college your student has chosen to attend.Their transcript cannot be sent without a PARCHMENT account. www.parchment.com

LAST WEEK FOR SENIORSThe last full day of school for seniors will be Tuesday May 31st.

There will be a half day for seniors only on Wednesday June 1st, hours 1-3. The Senior Picnic will begin at 11:00 a.m.on this half-day at Jaycee Park. If you would like to help out at the picnic or contribute food, please contact Margaret Burchi at [email protected]

REHEARSAL/CAP AND GOWN DISTRIBUTIONThe graduation process begins with a mandatory rehearsal for all those participating in the graduation cere-mony at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7th in the gymnasium. Caps and gowns will be distributed only to those students who have no academic or fi-nancial obligations and if your student has turned in their Senior Exit Survey. Seniors and their parents should check with Mrs. Sparbeck in the Guidance Office for fine obligations.

National Honor Society: If your student is an NHS member and has met the service point requirement, then your student has the honor of wearing an NHS collar. Please have your student pick up their col-lar when they receive their cap and gown at the NHS table. Please bring $3 dollars, in exact change. The collars must be turned in at the end of the graduation ceremony. The cost covers cleaning charges.

HONORS AND COMMENCEMENT ATTIRECommencement is a very impor-tant, dignified ceremony. To insure the dignity of the occasion for every-one, any student who is improperly dressed or who is under the influ-ence of alcohol or any illegal sub-stance will be removed from the lineup prior to the ceremony.

Everyone is encouraged to dress for the occasion for both the Hon-ors Convocation and Commence-ment. Athens students have be-come known for the pride they show in themselves and their school. Let’s continue this demonstration of pride. Because the gowns become wrinkled when boxed for delivery, graduates are urged to iron and hang the gown prior to wearing it. Pins, flowers, etc.

1. Students are in Grade 11 or Grade 12.

2. Students can qualify for dual enrollment by taking one of the following assessments: pSAT, pLAN, or ACT. The following table shows the complete list of scores that qualify students for dual enrollment:

State endorsement is not required in any specific area for this participation.

3. Students must be enrolled in both the school district and postsecondary institution dur-ing the local school district’s regular academic year and must be enrolled in at least one high school class.

4. The district must not offer the college courses. An exception to this could occur if the local board of education determines that a scheduling conflict exists, which is beyond the student’s control.

5. The college courses cannot be a hobby, craft, or recreation course, or in the subject areas of physical education, theology, divinity, or religious education.

6. School districts are required to pay the lesser of:

a. The actual charge for tuition, mandatory course fees, materials fees and registration fees; or

b. The state portion of the students' foundation allowance, adjusted to the proportion of the school year they attend the postsecondary institution.

Families who qualify for the National Free and Reduced Lunch Program can indicate financial need within the online registration and a portion of your fees will be waived. Your request will be reviewed and you will receive an e-mail reply with your total cost which will allow you to complete your registration. COACH'S CORNER

2016 Meeting Dates

First Monday of the month

Held in the TACC @ 7 pm

Spring Update for MembersIn this issue, we spoke with the boys’ varsity lacrosse coach Justin Suarez.March is a key month for our mem-

bers. It’s time to take care of those last details to qualify your student athlete for scholarships and grants. Have you accumulated eight points by volunteering at the concession stand? If not, this is the month to step behind the counter and it couldn’t come at a better time. While many members realize the conces-sion stand needs people during the fall, typically the spring season finds us scrambling to cover all the shifts.

In addtion to eight volunteer hours, parents must attend a meeting in the first and second semester. The meeting on March 7 is the last one before applicatons are due. March 31 is the last day to acculumulate points. Applications are due April 1, 2016.

It Takes a Team! Get involved. Sign-up at: http://athensathleticboosters.org/sign-up

The boosters’ goal is to support athletics at Athens, so every year, money is allocated for each sporting activity. In addition, there are funds set aside to support enhancements to the athletic program. A coach only needs to download a request form from the boosters’ site, complete it and submit it to Mr. Dowd. The web site also lists the guidelines for approved expendi-tures. The budget planning begins in August and that is the best month to request additional funds. Fortunately, more coaches are stepping forward to request funds, don’t be left out, put in your request now!

What are you looking forward to this season?

The boys have put in a lot of practice since last season, and I’m looking for-ward to continue working with them. I love the first day of spring practice, always bursting at the seams with en-thusiasm and optimism!

>Are there key players that we should watch for?

Junior attackman and two time all-state selection, Jake Lining should be in line for another great season. De-fensemen Nick Hayden, Mitchell Gor-ski, and midfielder Elliot Gorski will be back for their third year on varsity. De-fenseman A.J. Shaw and goalie Max Cavallier will be back building on last year’s great season.

>What is your feeling about the com-petition?

Our league, the OAA, is always tough, with perennial top 20 teams Birming-ham, Clarkston, Troy, and Bloomfield. Haslett-Williamston, DeLaSalle, and Northville are all very good programs as well.

>Do lacrosse skills transfer well into well into other sports?

Most of our team plays more than one sport. Lacrosse skills align well with football, soccer, basketball, and hockey – all use teamwork, field/ice awareness, understand angles and le-verage, and develop fine motor skills.
