A Letter From The Editor
By: Ketrin Gavani
The Winter Social has arrived! All of NEHS worked super hard to put such a unique event together. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the Win-ter Social committee met in Ms. McKenna’s room to discuss plans and divide into teams for food, decorations, and games. By November 18, they had all their requests put in place for donations. Thank you to anyone who gave either their time or a donation in supporting this event! NEHS and the Newsletter thank you for being active members! Members still have a lot to look forward to, including the trip to Mag-ic Kingdom in February, the Socks for Dobby fundraiser, the Valen-tines Day activities, and more. At Largo, NEHS likes to keep the same activities each year in order to establish tradition. As a club, NEHS stands out in it’s commitment to tradition and unique surprises, like this very own Newsletter! In order for members to attend the trip to Magic Kingdom, they must turn in $100 by early January to Ms. McKenna. This covers both the ticket cost and the transportation cost (school bus). If you are having financial trouble and cannot pay the $100, there is support available. NEHS wants to provide members who need extra help with an oppor-tunity to gather and establish fundraising ideas. Participation in this will not be required from members, although it would be very benefi-cial to those who want to go but cannot afford it. More information for that will come at a later time. In the meantime, relax and get ready to enjoy your winter break! Happy Holidays from NEHS.

Members of the Month
By: Tyler Haley Squire: Tara Rosenbaum
Tara was acknowledged as Squire of The Month for her dedication to the Creative Writing Club, of which Na-tional English Honor Society is the parent club. Tara cites her motivation for starting and running the club as “wanting to share the joy of storytelling and creation with everyone.” Tara’s hard work got the club rolling and it now conducts meetings eve-ry Tuesday after school start-
ing at 1:45 in Ms. McKenna’s room. All writers, within NEHS or not, are encouraged to join and help create a productive and reliable community that helps all kinds of writers. Tara looks forward to ex-panding the club and keep it running, with the help of all current and potential members.
Knight: Mac-Kenzie Howard
MacKenzie was awarded with Knight of The Month for her drive to assist the society. On her own accord, MacKenzie ar-ranged a fund-raiser to assist with admission costs for students hoping to attend the Magic Kingdom field trip. The fundraiser is set to occur at the Art in the Heart Café in Dunedin on January 7th, 2017. The fundraiser will consist of pot-tery painting, and MacKenzie is hopeful that around 40-50 people will show up to help a good cause. MacKenzie’s selflessness in assisting others sets the standard for all members of NEHS, and we are thankful for her efforts.
SENIOR COLLEGE REPORT
By: Amy Radwan
SENIOR: SARA ZANDY
Sara, in addition to being part of the National English Honor
Society, is the President of Largo High School’s French
Honor Society. She likes biking and hanging out with her
friends. Sara recently applied to the University of Florida
because that is the school she hopes to go to the most. “I feel
like it’s a good distance from home, not too far but not too
close,” she explained. “I love Florida and I really don’t want
to leave!”
SENIOR: LIZ LAUER
Liz, the President of NEHS, is an Early Admissions student
at St. Petersburg College. Her passion is playing guitar.
“Concerts are my life!” she expressed. Liz, who aspires to
be an English teacher, applied to FSU because the campus is
beautiful and historic. “They also have a really good English
program,” she added.
SENIOR: LIZ WINANS
People-person Liz is a self-proclaimed “Big Animal Nerd”. She loves cats, dogs, and all other animals – expect for liz-
ards, which she claims to dislike due to having similar names! Liz submitted only one application to a college,
Flagler College, in St. Augustine. “When I was in seventh grade, my family took a tour there,” she described. “I fell in
love with the architecture and how close the community was at the college. It’s like one big family, but a family that edu-cates you. I love it.”
Magic Movies
By: Kim Nguyen
To make this holiday season even better, go enjoy a
movie with your friends and family! If you loved the Harry
Potter series, either in the
movies or the books by J.K.
Rowling, Fantastic Beasts
and Where to Find Them is
the prefect fit for you. In
the Harry Potter world,
Fantastic Beasts and
Where to Find Them is
originally a book used by
Harry Potter himself
throughout his studies. The
release of the movie was
on November 18, 2016. If
it’s still in theatres, don't
miss out on your opportuni-
ty to watch the movie and
continue your studies in
this lovely series!
Another magical movie is coming out soon in March
2017! Those who fell in love with the animated version of
Beauty and the Beast will die for the upcoming live action
version. It's the same story plot, so no need to fear. What
could go wrong? If you’ve never seen Beauty and the Beast,
this is the perfect opportunity! This, along with Fantastic
Beasts, are two suggestions of “beast” theme related movies
to check out. Enjoy the holiday!

Behind Shakespeare in Hollywood
By: Iris Serrano
“I go, I go; look how I go / Swifter than arrow…”
This was one line that stood out from character Puck
in Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood, the play that
theatre teacher Gerald Durst directed here at Largo High
School. In case you missed it, Shakespeare in Hollywood is a
witty play set in the 1930s. Oberon and Puck, characters from
William Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night's Dream,
get transported to a movie set which is shooting a film version
of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the two get lost in the
world of “Hollywood land”. The story takes us through how
Oberon and Puck try to return to their homeland, Athens,
while having a little fun along the way.
In each of the three nights it aired, the show was a
complete success. One of the stars, Priscilla Mclain (Lydia
Lansing) can agree to that.
Q: Could you explain your character?
A: I portrayed Lydia Lansing. Lydia Lansing is a
beautiful show girl who wants to be a Hollywood star. She
dates Jack Warner in the hope he will help make her dreams
come true. Lydia flirts with other men to get her way but ulti-
mately learns she truly loves Jack.
Q: How long was the rehearsal process?
A: The rehearsal process was around 2 months. We
rehearsed 3 days a week and our rehearsals ranged from 3-5
hours.
Q: Are you content with the outcome of this Produc-
tion?
A: I am very content with the outcome of Shake-
speare In Hollywood. It showcased all that theatre is about.
Humor, drama, heartbreak, whit. It's one of the most fun
shows I've ever been a part of.
Q: How many other productions have you been in?
A: At Largo High I've been involved in five, and
outside of school I've been in six. Theatre is my passion so I
hope there are many more productions in my future!
Although the show is over, you still have a chance to
witness the excellent talent of Largo High’s actors/actresses
and the direction of Mr. Durst. The musical South Pacific will
be playing at Largo High’s auditorium in April, 2017.

How to Prepare for the SAT/ACT By: Tamara Gibbs There are several opportunities to take the upcoming SAT Tests, so you better get ready quick! If you want to do your best on the SAT, you might want to consider doing SAT Prep. Why should you care about your SAT performance? Your SAT scores are sent to colleges and univer-sities during the application process, and can af-fect whether or not you get accepted. Ultimately, the SAT Tests are IMPOSSIBLE to ignore if you are want to go to college and pursue a career. There are different ways to prepare for the SAT, such as SAT Classroom Online, SAT Class-room On-Site, and SAT On Demand Self-Paced Course. Perhaps the best way to prepare is by us-ing Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a learning resource for all ages that provides practice exer-cises, instructional videos, and a personalized dashboard that shows learners how to study at their own pace inside and outside of school. Khan Academy can help you improve your skills in sub-jects such as math, science, history, and reading. On Khan Academy, you have the ability to cus-tomize your own personal SAT prep, where you can pick your start date and how many times a week you practice. For more information, go to www.khanacademy.org. It is important that you begin studying for the SAT as soon as possible. A good time to start would be after you sign up to take the test. The longer you wait, the less prepared you will be, which adds more stress and pressure when taking the test. Also, last minute cramming is not recom-mended. Many teachers recommend doing SAT prep because it results in a major increase in scores. Your SAT score can be the difference be-tween an acceptance or a rejection by a college, so the higher the score, the better!
The ACT is just important as the SAT. Admission officers use the ACT to judge your academic preparedness for college, in replacement of the SAT. The best place to go to for ACT prep is the Kaplan ACT Prep Course, which can be found at www.kaptest.com/ACT. Kaplan is dedi-cated to helping you achieve your goal. It provides students with the right tools, such as test-taking strategies, proctored full length practice tests, timed practice questions, and detailed Smart Re-ports that track your progress. 95% of Kaplan stu-dents got into one or more of their top choice col-leges in 2012, 2013, and 2014. That could be you! If you take this prep course seriously, you can get an excellent score on the ACT. Teachers believe that confidence is an incredibly important part of your success on test day, for both the SAT and ACT. The best way to be confident during the exam is to use SAT and ACT Prep Courses, such as Khan Academy and Kaplan, which offer some of the finest practice material in the industry. If you study hard, you’ll feel ready on Test Day and have a higher chance of getting the score you want. Good luck!
