A Letter from the CEOFriends of the Community:

I am pleased to release the Muskingum County Community Foundation’s (MCCF) 2015 Annual Report: “Blueprints.”

As a young boy I always wanted to be an architect. I would spend hours upon hours looking through design books and studying blueprints, drawings and other plans for buildings. I loved the idea of taking a plan from paper to a finished structure.

During 2015, the Board was busy working on our “blueprints” for MCCF. The strategic planning work has continued into this year, as we now

try to answer “Who we are, what we do and how can we help?” I am excited about the direction our planning process is taking and the new cornerstones the Foundation will be embracing in the next several years. However, as every good architect knows, you must listen to the people using the “building.” Therefore, we’ve made a concerted effort to talk to the community to make sure we hear you and what you want from MCCF.

In this report, you’ll see a list of new funds and scholarships that were created in 2015 as well as the grant recipients from the 2015 Spring Grant Competition. You’ll also find a snapshot of the unaudited 2015 financials.

This is YOUR community foundation, and we look forward to engaging the community in 2016 to share our blueprint for the Foundation. Remember, you are welcome anytime at 534 Putnam, and if there is ever anything we can do for you, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Brian Wagner Chief Executive Officer

Donor Advised Funds (DAF) Our Donors made a Difference

Some of our donors...

• Supported a local arts program in Crooksville. If the donor had not stepped forward to offer support, the 12 kids in the program would have never had the opportunity to learn about the visual arts.

• Used their DAF to support the Tuesday Music Club’s efforts to send high school students to a summer music camp.

• Used their DAF to offer continous support to the charities and organizations that are most near and dear to their hearts.

To find out how you can establish a DAF, contact Brian Wagner or any of the MCCF staff.

Special Events Zanesville Prize

MCCF presented the second Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics international juried exhibition in 2015. Following the inaugural event in 2014, the 2015 exhibition included more than 60 works of art featured from September 2015 until January 2016 at the Zanesville Museum of Art. Jurors Doug Jeck, Garth Johnson and Julia Galloway selected Colby Parsons’ Peak #1 as the $20,000 Best of Show winner.

The Zanesville Prize is scheduled to return in 2017, as the show becomes a biannual show to allow artists more time to create their masterpieces.

Groundhog Day 2015More than just a weather event!

The community gathered at the Ohio University Zanesville/Zane State Campus Center on Friday, January 30, 2015, as the MCCF held its annual Groundhog Day Celebration. More than 175 live and silent auction items were sold, raising about $40,000—portions of which were used to support the 2015 Spring Grant Competition.

Over 375 people attended the annual event making it one of the “hottest” rooms in Zanesville. The evening featured two community members being recognized. The 2015 Dick Johnson Civic Leadership award was presented to local businessman Mark Moyer for his years of service to Genesis Hospital and the community. The 2015 Brian T. Wagner Community Leadership award was given to Bethany Hayes for her work in the public safety arena. By highlighting their commitments to Muskingum County, the Foundation continues to honor individuals who are helping to improve the region for the benefit of all.

If you want more information about the past recipients of the Dick Johnson Civic Leadership Award or the Brian T. Wagner Community Leadership Award, visit our website, www.mccf.org

College Night 2015On Thursday, March 12, 2015, over 200 students and their families attended College Night 2015. College Night is an evening of information sessions about everything students need to be aware of during the college-going process.

Philo High School junior Kimberly Kelly said that “All of the information was very insightful and helpful. It will definitely help me in planning for college next year. My favorite part of the entire night was winning a scholarship to Muskingum University.”

College Night Ten Years of Serving Muskingum and Surrounding Counties

College Night is a community service project developed by area county high school counselors to provide parents the tools necessary to help their children choose an appropriate post-secondary education. Scholarship Central and the Muskingum County Community Foundation agreed to lend their logistical and financial support to the project. Participation is free of charge for all attendees.

School Counselors and Scholarship Central have collaborated in regular quarterly meetings to prepare for College Night each year since the first event in 2007.

Since 2007, more than 4,300 students and family members have attended 10 College Nights.

Our AmeriCorps Ohio College Guides were essential in all roles of organizing and staffing our tenth annual College Night 2016 on March 10, 2016. 542 students and family members (272 students) from 27 area Middle Schools and High Schools each participated in 3 of 19 possible educational sessions. Twenty-five $250 and six $500 scholarships sponsored by local businesses, high schools and colleges were awarded.

211 scholarships have been awarded totaling more than $53,000. Sixty-two of these scholarships have been disbursed to students attending college and the remaining awards are being held by the Foundation for students still in high school for them to receive after their first term of college. Most of the money for these scholarships was donated by local individuals, businesses and organizations.
