The Professional Dancers’ Postgraduate Teaching

Certificate (PDPTC)

Designed for Dancers wishing to prepare for a new career in teaching whilst continuing to perform

Dancers who are already teaching but wish to gain an internationally renowned RAD teaching qualification whilst continuing to work

Widens access to higher education and initial teacher training for professional dancers at postgraduate level

Offers Registered Teachers Status (RAD)

Programme Overview

The programme is offered as a part-time, distance learning delivery with taught components (on site in Berlin). It is a modular programme (Four 15 credit modules) delivered over one calendar year (January –November).

How the programme is taught?

Begins with a 3 day Induction Seminar, (January)

Followed by a period of distance learning.

In the summer (July), students attend an Intensive Study Period (minimum duration four weeks) which comprises practical sessions, lectures, seminars, discussion groups and tutorials.

In the final module, students undertake a teaching placement in a dance school of their choice where they are supported by a Mentor and Practical Teaching Supervisor.

Assessment mode

Modules are assessed through a range of written tasks including reflective journals, lesson plans, reports and projects.Module PDPTC704 is assessed through a Practical Teaching Examination followed by a short discussion on the class examined.

Progression routes

Students who exit with 60 credits may apply to the Master of Teaching (Dance) programme, subject to meeting the English language and entry requirements and completing an online postgraduate study skills course.

Entry requirements

We welcome applications from dancers with significant professional experience and advanced technical proficiency in ballet. ILTS English Language Proficiency test for students whose first language is not English. (score 6.5) The admissions process requires a personal statement from the applicant outlining their skills, knowledge and career aspirations and a current statement from a referee, and will also include an interview. The application form can be downloaded on www.radeducation.org.uk or posted upon request.

Employment prospects Graduates are well placed to work in the private (vocational) dance sector and in a range of educational contexts internationally across Europe and/or to enrol for further study at postgraduate level. Registered Teachers status – RADThe programme includes study of the syllabi and examinations of the RAD. Graduates are eligible to become teaching members of the RAD and can enter students for RAD examinations should they wish to do so.
