ALBION CENTRAL SCHOOL --- Achievement, Character, and Success for Life!

Congratulations to the Class of 2012! The Albion Central Community celebrated its 134th graduation on June 22, 2012. It was the capstone of several months spent celebrating the successes of the students of Albion Central. I was pleased to recognize our seniors for their achievements in academics, athletics, music, drama, arts, leadership, and service to others. They made their mark,

a lasting positive imprint, on their school and community. The Class of 2012 “set the bar high” for their younger schoolmates, who have already earned impressive honors of their own. Seniors and underclassmen alike joined this year to earn the high school’s third consecutive Scholar Athlete Team School of Distinction title. For each of the past three years a state specified number of students on every varsity team carried a grade point average of 90 or better! Athletes and musicians earned honors in their respective areas and are recognized throughout the Link for their achievements. While we are into the summer months, we have much to accomplish here at school before students return in September. In addition to the usual preparation of the facilities (which began even before graduation day), teachers will be busy with curriculum and professional development to continue to improve the instruction that we offer. State mandated changes that we will address this summer include the new state teacher and principal evaluation system and the implementation of the state’s Dignity for all Students Act. Additionally, the federal government has issued new directives for school meal programs and the state of New York has added regulations governing the programs. It will surely be a busy summer! We will share updates in August and September. Several activities are planned this summer to prepare students for transitions here at school. Keep your eye out for the district calendar, to be distributed in mid-August for details on Open Houses, Orientations, and Campus Tour day. Please enjoy a safe and relaxing summer. We look forward to the first day of classes for students on Wed., Sept. 5, 2012.

A Message from our Superintendent…

School Lunch Program Changes for 2012 - 2013

On Jan. 25, 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama announced new school meal nutrition standards that go into effect starting on July 1, 2012. Under these standards:

• No more than 10 percent of calories can come from saturated fat and schools must eliminate added trans-fat.

• School meals must meet strict calorie limits.• Schools must gradually reduce sodium levels in school meals.• Cafeterias must offer larger servings of vegetables and fruit with every school lunch,

and children must take at least one serving.• Schools must offer a wide variety of vegetables, including at least a weekly serving of

dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes.• Milk must be fat-free or 1% (flavored milk must be fat-free).• All grains offered must be whole-grain rich.

While this will mean changes for students in the coming year, our school district has already implemented many of these healthy changes. Fresh fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas, pineapple and fruit cups have been on the current menu. Fresh vegetable offerings including baby carrots, broccoli and salads have also been served. The introduction of some whole-grain pasta, bread and pizza crusts has already begun and fat-free milk is the current standard for our program. The most significant changes that your student will notice during the 2012-13 school year are as follows:

• Allbreads,crusts,wrapsandpastawillbewholegrain(nomorewhitebreadoptions allowed).

• Portionsizesforvegetablesandfruitswillbelarger.• Studentsmusttakeatleastonefruitoronevegetablewiththeirmeal.• Portionsizesofmeatsandproteinsarerequiredtobesmaller.• The Federal Government is requiring schools to increase their price for lunch each

year. For 2012-13 school year, we are required to increase the cost of a paid lunch to $1.50.

We appreciate your cooperation as we all work together towards healthier eating choices.

Albion Middle School Students Participate in Mock Trial

By Rose Arnold & Destiny Wolfe

On May 10, 2012, a group of Middle School students in Mock Trial went to the Batavia Courthouse during the school day to act out a court case. These students have been meeting twice a week since October to rehearse the case of Romeo and Juliet. Mock Trial is an after-school group that meets every Wednesday and Thursday. The students have been learning about the judicial system. Mr. Knisley, a 7th-grade English teacher, has been coaching these students to ask questions as a lawyer would and answer questions as a witness. The students that portrayed lawyers were Destiny Wolfe, Lauren Becht and Riley Seielstad on the defense side, and Joe Madjeski and Kaitlin Zwifka on the side of the plaintiff. The defense was defending Friar Laurence, who was played by Zaria Rice. The witnesses for the defense were: Rose Arnold as Juliet’s nurse and Tessa Pollock as Benvolio Montague. The lawyers for the plaintiff were advocating on behalf of Lord Capulet, who was represented by Zachary Shaffer. They intended to prove that Friar Laurence was not liable for the accidental death of Juliet. Witnesses for the prosecution were: Lady Capulet, who was depicted by Rebekah Thompson and Leigha Townsend who played Princess Escalus. The jury was made up of Batavia Elementary School students. The two verdicts they were deciding on pertained to Friar Laurence’s ability to marry people and if he could dispense medicines. The jury came to a verdict that Friar Laurence should be able to marry anyone, (the defense greatly supported that conclusion), but the jury decided that he could not distribute drugs under any circumstances. The plaintiff did a remarkable job of buttressing the verdict about the drugs. All in all, the students involved in this case presented it very well to Judge Croyle. He had a good connection with the kids. Throughout the trial, he helped the jury and spectators further understand the facts of the case by explaining things to them step by step. The judge and spectators were impressed with the performance of the students, and the students gained a greater understanding of the judicial system.

AHS Instrumentalists Score Well at NYSSMA Solo Evaluation

Eight high school instrumentalists made the two-and-one-half-hour trek to Bolivar-Richburg Central School to perform at the New York State School Music Associations Solo and Ensemble Festival on Fri., June 1. Participating students spent weeks preparing upper-level classical solos. At the festival, they performed these same solos, many of which are multi-movement pieces, along with memorized scale exercises for a state adjudicator. Students also had to perform a sight-reading excerpt. For this portion of the evaluation, they are given a piece of music they’ve never seen before (composed specifically for this evaluation), are allowed 60 seconds to look it over, and then must perform it on the spot. NYSSMA solos are categorized from level I (easiest) to level VI (hardest). All of our Albion students prepared levels IV-VI solos, which are high school, collegiate, and professional grades, in terms of difficulty. Level IV students are judged on a 28 point scale, while levels V & VI students are judged on a 100 point scale. All of our students performed admirably!

• Michael Patterson, alto sax: level VI, A+ (100) • Jon Trembley, snare: level VI, A (96) • Rebecca Flanagan: level VI, A (93) • Amber Smarpat, flute: level V, A+ (99) • Samantha Dumont, alto clarinet: level IV, Outstanding (28) • Mark Graham, bari sax: level IV, Outstanding (27) • Brooke Chandler, trombone: level IV, Excellent (24) • Charlyne Olick, alto sax: level IV, Festival (comments only)

AHS Instrumental Music teacher Mike Thaine said he’s extremely proud of his students. “It’s very difficult to perform music of this complexity, especially by yourself, and for a complete stranger who is specifically looking for flaws in your performance! Throw in the memorized scales, and sight-reading requirement and the experience is beyond what many kids can handle.” He said it all boils down to preparation. “Every one of our kids did a wonderful job. We had two perfect scores, a couple of them were just one point off, but none of our students lost more than 4 points. I give them all the credit in the world.”

The Community as Schools (C.A.S.) program located at the Villages of Orleans (formerly the Orleans County Nursing Home) celebrated “Moving Up Day” for seven students on June 11, 2012. The program is an alternative education program for students who show promise but are struggling in the traditional high school setting. Students are given a chance to succeed in an environment that is completely different. This innovative program has earned rave reviews for its ability to intervene and get these students back on track. C.A.S. students attend classes in the nursing home and interact with residents and staff on a daily basis. Some residents have experience that is helpful to students and oftentimes the connection between students and residents is very deep. This interaction with staff and residents is what makes the program so unique. The program is facilitated by High School Teacher Brennan Meakin and High School Guidance Counselor Sally Schmidt. Meakin congratulated the students for overcoming many of the challenges they faced throughout their high school career and told them how proud he was of their accomplishments. Meakin said, “This program allows students to shine in a different environment and encourages ‘at risk’ students to look beyond their current situation. It stresses the importance of staying in school and the value of graduation.”

Senior Citizens Spend the Day at Albion High School!

Albion High School hosted its annual Senior Citizens’ Day in early May. This day is a favorite of both seniors and students. The festivities began at 9:30 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast. This year over 100 senior citizens registered to attend the event. Activities for the day included rock painting, picnic games, bingo and face painting along with browsing through the art foyer to admire student work. Bingo, as always, was a favorite for the day. Lunch was served in the gym by members of the student council. While lunch was being served, the seniors were entertained by music from the Jazz Band, Select Chorus and performances from the Drama Department.

Albion National Junior Honor Society Members Wrap Up Busy Year!

By Meredith Patterson, President of the National Junior Honor Society

The Albion National Junior Honor Society is much more than just an honor roll. The National Junior Honor Society establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student’s exemplary performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. The most prominent, and perhaps the most important of these five pillars is service. The Albion sector of the NJHS is aimed at introducing the value of community service to the world’s future leaders. This year, Albion’s NJHS consisted of 30 members. During this school year, these members volunteered over 800 hours of community service within the Albion school district and community. As a group, these hours were spent doing volunteer work such as ushering at the Albion Middle School’s Open House and Cultural Diversity Day. Several students also spent many afternoons tutoring Elementary School students after their school day was finished. In addition, associates participated in the Albion Elementary School’s PTA Christmas Craft Day and rang the bell for the Salvation Army at various local venues in the Albion community during the holiday season. Individually, students volunteered at PAWS and performed many great services for local churches. On June 16, 2012, the NJHS joined the community in passing the books from the old Swan Library to the new in a group effort to aid the Albion neighborhood. With so much volunteer work, many of Albion’s NJHS members gained over 25 hours of community service. Such a dedication to service is recognized with a service pin. This year, 24 service pins were awarded to Albion’s NJHS members. It is truly an honor to be selected as a part of the NJHS. It also takes an incredible amount of hard work and a commitment to one’s studies. Every member must have a high sense of self-duty to serve their community in any way possible. Through hundreds of hours of service, the Albion sector of the NJHS hopes to better their community, their country, and their entire world one great act at a time. Members receiving service pins this year are: Dylan Bader, Stacie Barnett, Bethany Bowman, Alex DeSmit, Mariah Elsenheimer, Jared Fearby, Kelley Flanagan, Matthew Flanagan, Aleah Foos, Madeline Gibbs, Sarah Graham, McKayla Hastings, Meghan Hurley, Abigail Maines, Caitlin Malanowski, Alyce Miller, Ellen Narburgh, Meredith Patterson, Katelyn Perry, Katlin Pieniaszek, Zachary Shaffer, Kelsee Soule, Melissa Symonds, Raven White and Mikayla Yaskulski.

Medieval Day 2012

Sixth graders enjoyed Medieval Day in late May with a chance to turn back the clock and learn about the culture and practices that were common at that time. The annual Medieval Day is one of the highlights of the year and students look forward to the variety of curriculum centered activities that are offered throughout the day. Students dressed in period costumes portrayed knights, lords, ladies, jesters and everything in between. They began by learning about the feudal system, the Crusades, knights and castles. Students participated in workshops throughout the day, such as calligraphy, almoners and Barony Court. They also learned about the significance of shields and the many purposes herbs were used for. At mid-day, they had a Medieval Feast complete with Fowl of the Manor (chicken on a bisquit), Medieval Moo Juice (milk), and for dessert, Cobble de la O’Chard (apple crisp). After the feast, they were summoned to the Great Hall to listen to an authentic medieval storyteller.

Middle School Award Winners Announced!

Congratulations to all of our Award Winners!

Mrs. Azzolino and her class received recognition as a Model Classroom in Accelerated Reader. It is a challenging goal to attain and she and her first graders worked very hard and diligently to accomplish the goal. Some of the criteria for Model Classroom are that students must read about three books a week for 12 weeks and, after taking a short quiz on them, must maintain an 85 percent average as a class. Reading growth is documented and sent into Accelerated Reader where they look over the documentation to see if the class has met all of the goals. They recognized the class and the teacher with certificates and a banner. Congratulations to Mrs. Azzolino and her class for working so conscientiously towards the goal and meeting it.

Class of 2019 Celebrates Moving Up Day

The Elementary School prepared to send its 5th-grade students to the Middle School during their Moving Up Day ceremony. Each student wrote an essay about the things that they had learned at the Elementary School and how it had helped them prepare for the next step in their educational journey. They thanked their teachers and staff members for helping them grow both socially and academically throughout the last six years. The essays were judged by staff members and each classroom had a winner declared. Essay winners were: Kirsten Struble, Nathaniel Grammatico, Honorato Martinez Maya, Malory Adams, Dylan Fox, Jacob Delamarter, Matthew Kovaleski and Catherine Wolck. These students read their piece to the entire class, faculty and many guests who were present at the assembly. Alternate essay winners from each class read the names of each classmate as they were congratulated for completing the first six years of their academic career. Alternate essay winners were: Payton Lake, Alexa Adams, Kaylee Rechtsiegel, Aja Naro, Natalie Lathrop, Isaiah Callicutt, Chantel VanDeGenachte and Arella Ives. Retiring Physical Education teacher Mrs. Dona Scharping was asked to address the class of 2019. She told them their life would become a smorgasbord of choices, but their most important choice is to devote the next several years to being a great student, learning as much as possible. She challenged the students to always do their best in their school work and their life and to make smart, safe, respectful and responsible choices.

Pioneer Days Return!

Fourth-grade students have looked forward to Pioneer Day for the last 27 years. It is the highlight of their school year and connects classroom learning to history in a significant way. Students dress in period clothing and rotate through stations lasting 35 minutes throughout the day. Because of the rotation, they are able to participate in many activities that bring new meaning to how the early residents of our country lived. The stations represent a wide variety of activities that help students appreciate early American culture and range from weaving to learning to making butter and candles. Students also get a peek at what school would have been like in pioneer days.

The Triple “C” Award program was established to honor young people who have distinguished themselves within their school and community. The award recognizes the qualities of Character, Courage and Commitment in New York’s students and is sponsored by the N.Y.S. Attorney General’s Office. Elementary School Principal, James Wood said, “This award highlights a student’s tremendous commitment to bettering oneself, their school and their community. This year the award was presented to two students in the Elementary School.” Special guest speaker, Assistant Attorney General Darren Longo said, “Their strength of character has helped them to achieve their goals and will guide them in making the right decisions in the future. It gives me great pleasure and a good deal of personal pride to introduce the students who have received this special recognition for their talents or abilities. I would like to present the Triple ‘C’ Award to Jessica Schleede and Shomari Howard.” Quoting from Jessica’s nomination form, Mr. Longo said, “Jessica is a perfect example of what character, commitment, and courage should look like. She is a young lady who truly cares about her fellow classmates and uses her knowledge to help them be successful. Jessica is an exceptional student who naturally displays compassion, enthusiasm and focus. She is President of the Student Leadership Council and a leader. The group hosted an ice cream sundae event for the entire Elementary School. For a $1 donation, students and faculty could enjoy a treat after eating a nutritious lunch. Sodexo USA, the company that provides food services to the Albion Central School District, generously donated 27 gallons of ice cream along with all of the necessary paper products to make the event possible. The Leadership group provided the syrup, whipped cream, toppings and manpower. As you can imagine, the event was VERY successful! This is the third year that the Elementary School Leadership group has sponsored this event. It has become one of the most anticipated “happy endings” of the school year! The group raised $718.15 to benefit the Community Action Foodbank.
