A Journey to a City

The world is fast shrinking into a global village driven by globalization and its

accompanying trends one of which is the increasing intermingling of cultures markedly in

large cities. There has been a tremendous change of attitude especially among the youth such

as acceptance to a cosmopolitan culture and a high level of tolerance, be it in matters

pertaining to religion, customs or traditions. The urban phenomenon has literally transformed

the face of the modern society, where everyone occupies a distinct place in the society and

has a voice in the undertakings for the public good. The city life in fact, has broadened and

opened up the minds of the people who were stuck in the traditions of the past.

The first thing that we observe in cities is the high level of civic sense that we seldom

see in the rural areas. When asked about the attitudinal differences in people coming from

rural areas Micheal, a student, said that “In the cities cleanliness and hygiene are given a top

priority. Denizens are well aware of their duties to keep their surroundings clean. Public

administration is much efficient and transparent in the cities compared to the rural areas”.

“The pressure on the officials tends to increase in paramount proportions when the denizens

gather together to assert their rights and highlight the inefficiencies and apathies of the public

servants, something which we rarely find in the rural areas” adds Micheal.

“Much attention is given to the high standards of education in urban areas which

equips the student with innumerable skills and dexterity to face the challenges of the ever

changing world, something which the rural areas lack” asserts Rashmi, a college student.

“The students in the cities are constantly exposed to the latest technologies. Hence it is

foolish on their part to not embrace what is at their disposal. Life is fair to each and everyone,

but then, it’s noticed that the urban people have an upper edge when it comes to learning new

things” added Rashmi.

The most glaring observation in the cities is the presence of huge disparity of wealth

between the rich and the poor. We see beggars on the streets and at the same time we also

observe rich people in their luxury cars. Yet underneath that disparity, we see unity, the unity

to strive forward to achieve respective goals. “One positive outcome in the cities is unity in

diversity. A city like Chennai welcomes people from all quarters of the Indian society be it

backward or advanced, each and every person has a role to play, no matter how miniscule

that role is, and that’s the beauty of the modern urban life, so complex and yet unified” says

Avino, a post graduate student.

A journey to a city is sure to illuminate the mind of someone who is unused to a

variety of cultures and in that process provides a basis for understanding and tolerance for

others. The fast-paced life in the cities, the development and the advanced technologies

astounds one experiencing it for the first time. Many people migrate to the cities in the

promise of a better life, but how often do these dreams gets fulfilled remains to be seen, with

so much competition and very limited space. Nevertheless, it can’t be denied that cities

provide better avenues for people to develop and to earn their livelihood than in the rural

areas.
