Vol I, Issue 2 Jul - Sep 2013 As we bring out the second issue of Gurudisha we are happy to announce that the first issue published in July this year was well received by the education fraternity. A kaleidoscope for important events, we have tried to capture the excitement and activities of the recent past. We fervently hope that it soon becomes a brand image of our institution. We are striving to make Gurudisha become ultimately a launch pad for the creative sensibilities of the students. The lessons for our students involved in either scholastic or co-scholastic activities don't end with the final bell of the day. In fact, the learning experi- ences that come from participation in debate, drama, music, speech, sports and games and the like, promote lifetime values that cannot always be learned in the classroom as such we accord great importance to activities. The school has pledged to participate in all Zonal and CBSE Sports and Cultural activities as well as events sponsored and organized by the education fraternity. Unlike sports events we see on television at the professional level where entertainment is the mission and educa- tion is not a primary objective, our goal is to a have positive lifelong effect on our students. A high sense of responsibility, respect, integrity, courage, decisiveness, trustworthiness and self confidence are lifetime values taught best on the stage and on the playfield, and these are the principles of good sportsmanship. With them, the spirit of competition thrives, fueled by friendly rivalry, courteous relations and graceful acceptance of the results. Many parents have enthusiastically mentioned the profound positive changes they have noticed in their children primarily due to such activities. We urge all parents to en- courage their wards to participate in all scholastic as well as co-scholastic opportunities provided by the Institution. While our core aim and purpose does not change, how the Institution positions itself in a changing society requires timely adjustment and review. The way in which we define ourselves within the current culture and social development determines how we move forward. It is towards this endeavour we seek your support. As we go to press we would like to wish all students the very best in their mid tem and SA-I examinations. ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਦਿਨ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੰ ਘੇ A JOURNAL OF THE GURU TEGH BAHADUR PUBLIC SCHOOL

As we bring out the second issue of Gurudisha we are happy to announce that the first issue published in July this year was

well received by the education fraternity. A kaleidoscope for important events, we have tried to capture the excitement and activities of the recent past. T he 67th Independence Day was celebrated with great joy, enthusiasm and patriotic zeal. The fes-

tivities began with the Chairman of the School Manage-ment Committee, S. Prehlad Singh Chandhok unfurling the tricolour and the singing of the National Anthem in the presence of S. Jasbir Singh Sarna and other members of the School Management Committee. The auspicious programme began with the traditional lighting of the lamp. The patriotic spirit was amply visi-ble in the dazzling array of patriotic songs and dance sequences by the children dressed in colourful cos-tumes, symbolizing the unity and rich cultural heritage of the motherland.

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by

domestic walls; Where words come out from the

depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its

arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of

reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by

thee into ever-widening thought and action;

Into that heaven of freedom, my

father, let my country awake.” - Rabindranath Tagore

About 140 young patriots took part. The natural and spon-taneous enthusiasm of the little patriots of the nursery wing especially touched our hearts and made us proud. The seniors enthusiastically enacted the role and prover-bial sacrifice made by the great nationalist and freedom fighter Sardar Bhagat Singh. In his speech the Principal lauded the efforts made by the teachers and students in organising the impressive event. He called upon all to rededicate themselves to the service of the nation. Jai Hind.

It was a very enjoyable learn-ing experience for the children since it was the first time that a competi-tion at the zonal level was organised by the school. The girls and boys team of the school participated and played admirably. A positive outcome of the event is that many of our children are now highly motivated to play this enjoyable tag game which hardly needs any equipment except for two Kho Kho poles.

A special parent teacher meet was held on 27th July 2013. This was the first meet since the school reopened after the summer vacations. Life has become so hectic that parents need help and guidance to overcome major challenges of parenting effi-

ciently and effectively. We feel that the demands of modern society mean many parenting skills are outdated. Accordingly, a semi-nar on ‘Parenting the Modern Age Child ’ was organized by the Life Skills and Personality Development Department of the school so as to help parents foster high-quality relationships with their children. The Chairman S. Prehalad Singh Chandhok and members of the management committee, parents and teachers attended the meet. The resource person, Mrs Ira Sehgal, a reputed consult-ant with NIE Times of India, engaged the audience with her practical tips on how to handle common problems confronting parents in bringing up their school going children. From his day to day experiences as the school doctor, Dr Sharad Mathur, advised parents on ways to regularly monitor children’s health and hygiene and deal with their common medical issues. The eloquent and graceful Mrs Madhu Nagpal, Past President of the Rotary Club of Delhi Metro stressed the need for listening to children and spending qual-ity time with them. Management Committee Secretary S. Amarjot Singh Sethi assured the parents that the school will provide every kind of facility within its means to enable all round development of children. Col Rajendra Verma (Rtd), the Director-Principal spoke on the need for the teachers and parents to closely work together in addressing modern day parenting challenges. He im-pressed on the parents to regularly keep in touch with the class teachers and closely monitor the progress of their wards. The seminar left the audience greatly enlightened and inspired. The PTA Vice President S. Surinder Pal Singh requested the school to organize more such useful seminars and open ended discussions.

‘Van Mahotsav’ meaning ‘the festival of trees’ is an annual tree planting festival celebrated in July. This year’s abun-dant monsoon should spur everybody to plant more trees wherever possible. Every responsible citizen is expected to plant a sapling during the ‘Van Mahotsav’ week and in the

monsoon season. The festival is regularly celebrated in the school and tree saplings planted every year. This season, the Rotary Club of Delhi Metro under the stewardship of its President Mr Gulshan Batra, for-mer Presidents Mrs Madhu Nagpal, Mr Nirbhay Narula and other distinguished Rotarians organised the function and provided the saplings. Members of the Interact Club of the school ensured that every sapling was planted with love and care in the best possible location in the school. The campus is blessed with a number of precious trees such as Pakar, Banyan, Wullar, Reethi, Arjun, Ashoka, Neem and Eucalyptus. Of particular interest is the Pakar tree which provides a shady spot near the school canteen. It is also known as the Indian fig tree and is one of the common trees of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Many consider the Pakar to be variety of the Banyan tree, which is not. It is a deciduous tree, pretty and quick growing, with a thick crown and spreading branches. The branches start coming out from the trunk at a small height and the tree gener- ally looks as if leaning towards its base. The buds of this tree are used for making pickles and cooked as a vege-table by frying. This tree also has medici- nal properties like the bark which makes an excellent gargle for the throat and a lotion for wounds. A coarse fiber is prepared from the bark.

The School celebrated the festival of "Janmashtami", marking the birth of Lord Krishna, with much pomp and splendour. Dahi handi is also an integral part of Janmashtami celebrations. It marks the mischievous and playful behaviour of Lord Krishna. It was the lightweight Ashwani of class VIIA and his senior friends (Govindas) who much to the delight of the children

Navjot of class III as Krishna and Jaspreet of class IV as Kansa are brothers in real life.

formed a human pyramid to break the earthen pot filled with butter hanging from an elevated rope. The toddlers celebrated the occasion with enthusiasm. They enacted childhood scenes of Lord Krishna, while teachers, along with kids, sang aarti and bhajans. The primary students in colourful attires presented `tableaus' depicting events from Krishna's life such as 'Krishna Janam', 'Kansa Vadh', 'Sheshnaag'. ’Goverdhan Parvat’, ’Krishna and Gopikas’. Kunal Thakur of class VIB and Shubham Thakur of class VIIIA in the peacocks colourful costume presented the beautiful ‘mayur dance’.

"May Lord Krishna's noble message of 'Nishkama karma' or duty without thought of reward, motivate all of us to work in unity and with selfless dedication for peace, prosperity and progress in our country." - Hon’ble President Pranab Mukherjee

Street plays have been an integral part of the Indian tradition. The idea of a street play is to propagate socially relevant and thought provoking messages in a humor-ous and satirical manner thereby creating awareness amongst the masses. The “nukkad natak”, is characterized by highly enthusiastic and energetic performance so as to attract maximum crowd. The Inter House Nukkad Natak competition was held on 26th July 2013. Kurtas, boisterous voices, social messages, high energy and aggression, amazing actors kept everybody spellbound. No grand stage or sets, no props, no curtains, no fancy dresses or make up, just plain actors presenting their views, the only relaxation being the use of microphones. However, it was decided to completely do away with microphones in the next such competition.

Our school participates in the Regional level CBSE Science Exhibition every year. This year it was held on the 5th, 6th and 7th August. We showcased two working models. The first was an improvised EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) based on the now ubiqui-tous battery driven auto, which has become so common on Delhi’s roads. The radical concept drew inspiration from the EMU’s of the Delhi metro rail. Definitely it could well be a radical solution for an efficient public transportation system. It was highly acclaimed by the judges and impressed in-quiring visitors. Ankit and Chirag of Class XII C took pains to get the conceptual model ready. Congratu-lations to both. Keep up the creativity. Jyotsna Lo-hia and Amritpal Singh also of class XII C con-structed a working model of an FM radio receiver. The model demonstrated the function of the vari-ous components involved in the design of an FM receiver. All the components were skillfully laid out and the receiver functioned flawlessly. Shabash!

T eachers’ day is an occasion that is looked forward to by the teachers and students alike. The student

council took initiative by eloquently expressed their love and gratitude to the teachers who constantly in-spire and encourage them. The teachers were enter-tained with a string of heart warming performances. Rahul played lilting melodies on the guitar, School Cap-tain Chahat sang a rustic Punjabi song while Sumit sung a graceful Hindi number. Expectedly, the celebrations thereafter shifted to the playfields. Teachers and stu-dents matched their energy and talent in various sports

and games culminating in a friendly ‘Tug of war’ match. We pray that this bond between the teach-ers and students greatly strengthen with each passing day.

The Kirtan Parchar Academy organized an Inter School Gurmat quiz Competition ‘Kaun Banega Gursikh Pyara” on Gurmat, Sikh History, Human Values, and the Punjabi Language at the Mehfil Banquet Hall, GT Kar-nal road on Sunday, 28th July 2013 from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. Our school was among 12 other schools which took part in the competition. There were six participants from each school including ours who were selected from Class VIII to Class XII. The quiz competition was based on the model of the well known TV show, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati ’. All the participantants were put through a multiple choice quiz. Those who excelled were shortlisted and offered the ‘Hot Seat ’. Two of our students, Miss Manpreet Kaur of class XIB and Master Divjot Singh of class XB were selected for this round. Both of these brought laurels to the school by winning cash prizes of Rs 500/- each. Congratulations. The school is proud of you.
