THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS" a INTERNATIONAL A Sunday, September 12, 1999 DAYLAMI DAZZLES IN CHAMPION S. On paper, yesterday's G1 ESAT Digifone Champion S. at Leopardstown looked like a highly competitive contest, but Daylami (Ire) (Doyoun {Ire}) turned the race into a rout, securing Godolphin's 14th Group 1 victory worldwide this season with a dominating nine-length decision. By adding this victory to his five-length win In the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond S. at Ascot July 24, the five-year-old establishes himself as the runaway leader in the Emirates World Series Racing Championship. Royal Anthem (Theatrical {Ire}) was sent right to the lead in this leg of the series, but, due to the presence of Godolphin's pacemaker Lord Of Men (GB) (Groom Dancer), he was not allowed to dic tate the pace as he had when winning the Aug. 17 G1 Juddmonte International. He led into the straight, but Daylami, who had been cruising along in third, was switched to the inside rail to make his bid and in only a few strides the race was over, with jockey Frankie Dettori looked around for non-existent danger from fully a furlong out and easing his mount down in the final 100 yards. Daylami, who has won six Group 1 contests and will retire to his breeder The Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud in Ireland at the end of the season, will now point for the G1 Prix de I'Arc de Triomphe Oct. 3. Godolphin boss Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum was naturally elated, but could not resist having a dig at the many experts who had rated Royal Anthem superior to Daylami. "I've been telling everyone that this is the next Swain (Ire)," he said. "I cannot think why the experts rated Royal Anthem superior to our horse. He had beaten him before and now he's done it again. Perhaps those experts should be called something else now." Dettori paid tribute to the decision to run Lord Of Men, saying, "It was hugely important that Lord Of Men took on Royal Anthem up front. He was able to dictate the Juddmonte at York, but our horse harrassed him from the start (in the Champion S.). But even with out Lord Of Men, I still think Daylami would have won today." French-based trainer John Hammond was fine lr£15,000 by the stewards for not starting the Michael Tabor-owned Montjeu (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) in the race, having declared the horse to run and then deciding to run him instead in today's G2 Prix Niel at Longchamp. (Chart, p2) "SILVER" EXTENDS STREAK TO 11 The 1-10 favorite facing five overmatched rivals, Silverbulletday (Silver Deputy) extended her winning streak over the fairer sex to 11 with a1 3/4-length victory in yesterday's Gi Gazelle H. at Belmont Park. Looking to add a fifth Grade I win to her resume, the champ swerved toward the rail from her inside post shortly after the start, then straightened away and settled just off the pace down the backstretch. She carried jockey Jerry Bailey to the lead while three wide on the far turn, drew off at the top of the lane and was not threatened by the late bid of 27-1 runner-up Queen's Word (Kingmambo), who was in receipt of 11 pounds. Explaining the change of course at the start of the race, Bailey said, "The Belmont chute is longer than any other racetrack's. There is stuff back there that many horses never see, and I don't think that she real ized that she was in a race. But she got her mind on running...down the backstretch." Added trainer Bob Baffert, "I had no concern. There were some nice fillies in there, but she just outclasses them so much. She's a great filly." St. Leger S. cont.Displaying courage of the highest order, Mutafaweq

galloped relentlessly to the line to deny Ramruma whatwould have been a famous victory. In the process, hegave Godolphin the record for quickest 50 Group 1wins worldwide. The winner had previously impressedwhen taking G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal AscotJune 18, but then disappointed slightly when fifth inthe G1 Irish Derby at The Curragh June 27. He was anencouraging fourth with a late run in the G2 GreatVoltigeur S. Aug. 17 and this test of stamina certainlysuited his requirements. Outsider Praslin Island (Be MyChief) led at a strong pace from All The Way (ShirleyHeights {GB}), Adair and Ramruma, as Mutafaweqraced in relaxed style in fifth. The running began inearnest as the field passed the three-furlong marker, where Ramruma, Mutafaweq and Adair all fought forthe lead. Mutafaweq held a definite advantage enteringthe final quarter, but Ramruma would not give up. Thepair treated the fans to a gritty battle until Mutafaweqgained the upper hand inside the final furlong, despiterolling into Ramruma, and he stayed on for a gutsy win,but the effort took its toll. There were distressingscenes in the unsaddling enclosure afterwards as thecolt, in obvious discomfort, struck out vigorously. RobinWhite, the Jockey Club veterinary officer, said, "I thinkthat he suffered from the effects of heat stroke andpost-race exhaustion and was dehydrated. We thinkthat caused the incoordination and discomfort. He hasbeen given 10 liters of fluid in an intravenous drip, including a sedative, to settle him down, and anti-inflammatories. At the moment we think that it is not amajor problem. He has recovered very quickly."

Winless since taking the G2 Hong Kong InternationalCup in December of 1997, Val's Prince was off theboard in five of his six starts last year, but ended theabbreviated campaign with a second-place finish in theGl Sword Dancer Invitational H. at Saratoga in August. The seven-year-old was then sidelined for 11 months, returning to be second in a July 16 Belmont allowancetest and again in the Sword Dancer in his latest effortAug. 14. The third choice off that performance, thechestnut gelding was on the bridle as he sat just outside pacesetters Mash One (Mashkour) and Fahris (Generous {Ire}), drove to the front as they raced into thestretch and left his rivals in the dust as he kicked awayto a decisive victory over the soft turf course. Trainedby Jimmy Picou until recently, he was making his firststart under the auspices of Jim Bond. "We actually justgot him in the barn," Bond assistant Mark Shuman said."He was in good shape and we just tried to keep himhappy. We're still learning about him." Winning jockeyJorge Chavez said, "He loves Belmont. He likes the bigturns, and the soft turf is good for him." The winnercould go next in the Gl Turf Classic Oct. 9, a race hewon in '97, with the Gl Breeders' Cup Turf Nov. 6 ashis ultimate goal. Honor Glide (Honor Grades), the 2-1favorite, was never in the hunt and finished last. "WhenI asked him, he ran for about 50 yards. After that, hewas struggling," jockey Jose Santos said. "From thehalf-mile pole on, he was going nowhere. He definitelydoesn't like the soft going at all."

Daryaba was a game winner of the June 13 Gl Prixde Diane Hermes in what was only her third start andher first in stakes company, beating the highly regardedStar Of Akkar (GB) by a length in a race that was run ata muddling pace. She makes her first start since thatvictory. Etizaaz, the pick of the Godolphin pair onjockey bookings, is also inexperienced, but she beliedher lack of racecourse action to win the Listed AtalantaS. Aug. 21 on her only start this season. That racecame over a mile, but it would be foolhardy to suggestthat her connections do not believe she will stay thisextra half mile. Godolphin's Fairy Queen started theseason with a decent effort when 10th in the Gl English 1000 Guineas May 2 and followed up with goodwins in the Listed Victress S. It's a low turnout, but all of the participants havewon at least one Group 1 race, with a total of eightGroup 1 wins all told. El Condor Pasa will bid to reversethe form of the G1 Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp May23 with Croco Rouge. That race heralded El CondorPasa's first run outside Japan and he was only collaredclose to home by an inspired burst of acceleration fromCroco Rouge. The Japanese champion went on totrounce a quality field in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud July 4 and is reported to have sparkled in hisworkouts this week, (jroco Rouge, who finished unplaced in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. at Sandown July 3 onhis most recent outing, will find the 12 furlongs at theouter limits of his stamina capabilities. But he had anabundance of excuses for his latest performance andcan be forgiven one poor run. Sagamix has finishedfourth in both his starts this season, the G1 Prix Ganayat Longchamp May 2 and the G1 Prix d'Ispahan at thesame track May 23. He has to find improvement tochallenge the top two, but he comes good at this timeof year and is sure to find track conditions to his liking.Borgia's best effort this season was a second in the G3Prix Exbury Mar. 13, but she has yet to recapture theform that saw her run second in the Breeders' Cup Turfand third in the Prix de I'Arc de Triomphe in 1997.

WEEKEND PEDIGREEPERSPECTIVES

by Alan Porter

PEDIGREE SHORTS

We don't see a whole lot of inbreeding to NijinskyII, but there was an unusual example last weekend inthe shape of Thornfield (h, 5, Sky Classic-Alexandrina, by Conquistador Cielo), who capturedthe Gil Niagara Breeders' Cup H. Thornfield is by oneof the best North American-based sons of Nijinsky II,and his third dam The Temptress is a daughter ofNijinsky, which gives him Nijinsky 2x4 at the top andbottom of the pedigree.

Inbreeding to various members of the Thong familyis working extremely well. The latest example isSabre Dance (f, 2, Sword Dance {lre}~Sister of Darkness, by Geiger Counter), winner of the Florida Stallion Susan's Girl S. Sword Dance's granddam Lisadellis a multiple group-winning daughter of Thong, andSabre Dance is out of a mare by Lisadell's halfbrother Geiger Counter. Note that Sword Dance hassired an earlier stakes winner Sword of Freedom outof a mare by King Pellinore, a half brother to Lisadelland Geiger Counter.

Never worse than third in her career, Nordican Inchstill has yet to win a stakes race, with three secondsand two thirds in five appearances. Her last start was agood one, as she rallied to take the lead in the G3 Prixde Psyche Aug. 7 at Deauville before being passed byWelluna (Ger). She has been running at between 10 and12 furlongs recently, although her last victory was atthis distance, an allowance win at Cholet April 12.

A bit up-and-down for Kevin Prendergast at TheCurragh, with a win in the G2 Pretty Polly S. followedby never-threatening runs in the Gl Irish Oaks and theG3 Meld S. She closed to be third in her last, the G2Royal Whip S. Aug. 14, but was still 614 lengths behind. She is a slow starter and may be compromised by trafficproblems in this field of 13, but gets Lasix for the firsttime.

Five straight good efforts, with two wins in her lasttwo starts, mark Ronda as one to watch. She hasshown that she can run over any course, as she wassecond in the G2 German 1000 Guineas May 2, wonthe G3 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly June 6 on softgoing and captured the G2 Falmouth S. at NewmarketJuly 7 in her last three starts. All three races were at amile and the added furlong is new territory, althoughGary Stevens should make a good guide.
