I trooked outuard from Heathrow to Ner York/JFK, trans-ferred and overnighted at New York/Nearark and then fIeIJ Ne$ark-{hicago,/o'hare-Ios Angeles and finaUy Honolulu. Ttre return sorrE ttlree weeks later uas Honolulu-Da11as,/Fort worth (with a five hour stop)-Boston and home to lleathrow.

With a routi.ng l"ike that the prospects rrere great for sde aircraft spotting.I checked in at O90O hours on Monday 25 October for flight AAIO5 departing at110O hours. f managed a vindow seat on the front left side by the emergency exitof the fully laden MD-ll (N1759).

push back uas 25 minutes late at 1125 due to five passengers being delayed by afire scare in the terminal which had brought dovn sqre steel fire doors blockingtheir passage to the aircraft. We then proceeded to runrray 0m for an 1138 takeoff torards London. Our flight routed outrrard leaving Dngland by Bristol overfreland, across the Atlantic arriving qver the pond at Nova Sc.otia, dovn theeastern seaboard by Etoston, Long IsLand and into JYR aL L432 hours locat timesome 6 hours 54 minutes later-

Custds and fnrnigration rrere cleared very guickly (20 mins) and wlthin 40 minutesof landing f nas on the airport bus to Manhatten Ifith the twln torers of theWorld trade Centre, and the Enpire State building in the distance. fnstead of astraight transfer between airports 1 chose to go lria the centre in order that iceuld get a guick look at the sights of this famous city. A quick change of busesand I rras soon at Nerark, and my overnights Hilton Hotel near ttE airport.

After a hearty fu11 Am--rican breakfast I caught the shuttle back to the alrportand checked in for flight AA161 scheduled to depart at 0929. Push back was deadon time, but, as Nerdark is very lrsy at this tine lt yas not rmti1.50 minutesl-ater that ne got airborne. Unbelievably there r,ere over 30 aircraft before usqueuing to get off the ground. The rc-10 flight (N167AA) to Chicago taklng justt hour 50 minutes. We touctEd dordn at O'hare just 15 minutes late so ot\rlouslythe schedule has raiting time at Newark built into it. The first thing that younotice on arrival at Chicago as the sheer slze of tlle alrfield, lt is a vastspread out placre rith at least four nnlfays in use at the saIIE titlp. We taxiedround to AtrEricanrs superb new terminal, where i trad an lrour on the ground to]-og the mainly AnErican Airl"ines aircraft.

Departure frot Chlcago vas scheduled for 12 noon and re pustd back again exactlyon tire having made up the slight delay on the turn ror:nd. We taxied out to runray32R and after $aiting for ten aircraft in front of us took off at 1230 hours forthe 3 hour 28 minute flight to Los Angeles. Lunch ras served about an hour intothe flight and on the menu uas a first for an inflight trEal for [E,Chicago deeppan pizza, different and not bad at a11. Our dec€nt into Ios Angeles uas qultebumpy due too the strong Santa Ana winds blowing torards the coast from thedesert. we also caught a glimpse of the disasterous fires wtridr were raging through-out the area causlng destruction to brushland and property. After landing andta:<ying to the American terminal I again trad an hour on the ground.

'Itre aircraft had only been about 25% fu1l leaving Nevark andabout 5()% fu1I frorn chicago to I-os Angeles but now every seat rras taken. On arrivalin a temperature of 80+ despite it being early evening f lfas greeted by my friendsand vlsked al{;ly to their apartment on the outskirts of tovn to @in my tErd earnedthree rreeks in the sun-

Drring my stay I managed a couple of guick visits to the airport. It,s difficultto say irhich is the best place for spotting. If you stay in the terminal and clearsecurity (no ticket required) you can get acEess to m)st qlates, including the newinter-island terminal, but you can't see a lot of the smaller inter_island aircraft,the based aircraft or the cargo terninal. As I had a car I opted for Lagoon DriveYhich nEans you can drive round the various llangers, cargo sheds etc. and their areplenty of these, and then you can park at the end of Lagoon Drive. Here they havebuitt a car park and j.t is right next too the take off point of the main runH-ay-Also many sma1l inber-island craft land here on a cross run$ay and the light aircrafthangers are here al-so, so its a pretty good spot. The only problem is ii,s guite along vay from the terminal and alnDst impossible to 1og any incoming flights and$hen you see sorething like an Air polynesia Boeing 767 landing it can be quitefrustrating.

the best sight at Honolulu for rE are the tvo Carvairs of Hawaii Pacific Air. Thesefine o1d birds still look in remarkably good crondition but, unfortunately, I didn'tsee them flyinq this year. During the nnrning mcst arrirrals are from the Pacific area(.fapan, Xorea, Australia). The American flights start arriving Late afternoon andcontinue into the late evening sith the inter-island flights of Aloha and Haraiiancerning and going all day.

The three Lreeks rtent all too guickly and with the temperatures alvays above 80 thetan develolEd quickly. For the flight. home on 13 November American Airlines providedDC-1O N141M which w-as scheduled to depart Honolulu at 2000 hours for the 6 hour 40mlnute flight to Dallas/Fort Worth rdhere we arrived at 0650 local time the foUowingtrprning. I ranaged a few hours sleep on the flj.ght so on arrival I had a guick break-fast before logging the many aircraft around. Again as the airport is so big a'ith Idon't knov hon nrany terminals mcst aircraft seen rrere either Arerican or Delta.

ltle flight frorn Dallas nas classed as a ttrough flight to Heathrorr vith a stop inBoston and as I had only one coupon in my ticket for it I expected to be boardinga Boeing 767 so I vas guite surprised to see a MD82 (N219AA) on ramp for the flight.lte flight to Boston took exactly three hours and as it lras dark on arrival I csuldn't6ee much. I had less than an hour on the ground before I transferred to Boeing 767N358AA for the final leg of my journey back to I-ondon Heathrov and a further 6 hours4O minutes of flying.

For the flight. home on 13 November American Airlines providedDC-1O N141M which w-as scheduled to depart Honolulu at 2000 hours for the 6 hour 40mlnute flight to Dallas/Fort Worth rdhere we arrived at 0650 local time the foUowingtrprning. I ranaged a few hours sleep on the flj.ght so on arrival I had a guick break-fast before logging the many aircraft around. Again as the airport is so big a'ith Idon't knov hon nrany terminals mcst aircraft seen rrere either Arerican or Delta.

ltle flight frorn Dallas nas classed as a ttrough flight to Heathrorr vith a stop inBoston and as I had only one coupon in my ticket for it I expected to be boardinga Boeing 767 so I vas guite surprised to see a MD82 (N219AA) on ramp for the flight.lte flight to Boston took exactly three hours and as it lras dark on arrival I csuldn't6ee much. I had less than an hour on the ground before I transferred to Boeing 767N358AA for the final leg of my journey back to I-ondon Heathrov and a further 6 hours4O minutes of flying.

We only had t-i mc to caI. l. f or a late lunch on the h,ay hone, butthe arrivals board looked good for an hour or so of entertainmentand the weaLher was delightful. No all-day breakfast today: thehangover couldn t t face it.

The walkways to the Terminal were fu11 of people pushing trolleysloaded vith suitcases and the departure lounges were busy withsmiling Geordies. The sun was shining and the Spectators RoofTerrace beckoned me along with many others. There are plenty ofseats in whlch to relax and enjoy the excellent view. A childrenssoft-p1ay area was an addltion slnce my last visit (alreadycosseting future passengers - smart marketing ) .

Fron past experjence I knew the Spectator Terrace to be anexcellent photographi.c vantage point, even when crowded. Thiswas possibly my last chance to get t.hat vinning shot for the1993 photo competition.
