BENEDICTION POSTLUDE “Postlude in Classical Style” Gordon Young MATTHEW 13:1-9, 18-23 (NIV)

“That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!’ Hear then the parable of the sower. ‘When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty’”

CHIMES PRELUDE “Shine Jesus Shine” arr. Mark Hayes BRINGING IN THE LIGHT WELCOME, REGISTRATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP L: Welcome friends to this gathering where we come to worship God in Jesus Christ. P: As we gather, may we recognize the presence of God as God has worked in and through many people in this historic place throughout the decades of our existence. L: As we hear the music, words spoken and sung, and sense in our spirits the very presence of God, may we hear God’s “word” for us today that we might understand God’s will for our lives. P: Speak to us, dear Lord, we pray. That we might hear, understand, and obey. Amen.

HYMN “Heaven Came Down” No. 510

(Verses 1, 2 & 3) CONFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Prayer of Confession: (In Unison)

Gracious Lord, we come before you today to hear your word. May we open our hearts and minds to receive your message to us today. We admit that the things we have done and encountered throughout life make it difficult to hear you and to understand. So speak to us, dear God that we might learn from you.

5

L: Let us now pray together the prayer that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taught us:

P: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

LIFE INVENTORY SHEETS

Our Christian faith assures us that death leads to eternal life with God. Meanwhile, family members, friends, and the pastors are sometimes in need of certain information that if available, could help them deal more appropriately with the grief and death of a loved one. The church office has Life Inventory Sheets that can assist your family during that time. If you would like a form to fill out, please contact the office at (623) 935-3411 or [email protected].

WALL OF MILITARY SERVICE

The Col. John “Scotty” Clarke Wall of Military Service is a monument given to the church by Isabel Clarke in honor of her late husband. The wall offers an opportunity for church members and their immediate families, living and deceased, to be recognized for their service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The monument is located on the

west wall of the Garden of Memories expansion. A brochure explaining how to honor a family member will be available in the church office during the week. All proceeds from plaque sales will be used to maintain the Garden of Memories.
