An American GameBasketball is truly an American game. In 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a teacher inMassachusetts, invented the sport. Dr. Naismith’s physical education studentswere bored and restless because they could not go outside for classes during thewinter. So he hung a fruit basket on either side of the gym and he found an oldsoccer ball to throw into the baskets. The students used a ladder to get the ballout of the basket. He made up the rules that are similar to the game of basket-ball today.

One reason basketball is so popular is that it’s simple to play. You need a basket,a ball, and a smooth floor. The baskets are 10 feet high, but, even though mostof the greatest players in the game are quite tall, you don’t have to be tall to play.

The rules are easy, too. Each team has five players who work together to put theball through the basket. The team that scores the most points – 2 points for mostbaskets, 3 points for long-distance baskets, 1 point for foul shots – wins. Rulechanges in basketball have made the game much faster and more exciting. Inprofessional basketball, teams must shoot the ball and either score or hit the rimwithin 24 seconds or lose possession of the ball. This rule speeds up the game.Players are skilled in artistic slam-dunking, crossover dribbling, powerfulrebounding, no-look passing, and long-distance shooting for three points. Theywork hard on their defense and put pressure on their opponents to make scoringdifficult. Teamwork is a big part of the game.

PlayingPositionFive players for each team are on thefloor at one time. The center is usual-ly the tallest player on the court andplays closest to the basket on bothoffense and defense. His job is torebound missed shots and block theopposing players from getting easyshots close to the basket. He must beskilled at scoring around the goal,too.

Just to the right and the left of thecenter are the two forwards. The“power forward” creates scoringopportunities by driving to the hoopwhile the “small forward” usuallypositions himself in the corner orwings looking for an open shot.

Two guards are usually the shorterplayers on the team. One is the “pointguard” who is an expert at handlingthe ball, dribbling, and passing toteammates to create easy shots. Thepoint guard brings the ball up thecourt and sets up the play. The“shooting guard” is a shooting spe-cialist and may be proficient at mak-ing the long-range three-point basket.

Of course, each player has his or herown set of skills and may not fit theexact profile.

DefensePlaying defense is an important jobfor every basketball player. Gooddefense means being committed tostopping the opponent. To do that,players must be in the proper positionand close enough to their opponentto prevent a good pass, a good shot,or the player dribbling right past thedefender. Defenders must do thiswithout holding, pushing, striking, ortripping an opponent. Generally,teams play either a “man-to-man”defense, meaning that each defend-ing player is responsible for guardinga specific player from the other team,or a “zone” defense, where eachdefender guards a specific area of thecourt. Successful defense requiresgood cooperation among teammates.

ScoringThe number of points scored dependson where the player is standing whenhe shoots. Two points are scored onany successful shot (often called a“field goal”) inside the three-pointline. Successful shots made beyondthe three-point line (23 feet, 9 inchesin the NBA; 19 feet, 9 inches in col-lege basketball) are worth threepoints. Three-point shooting is highlyvalued by teams and spectators. Afree throw is awarded after a foul iscommitted by an opposing player andis worth one point. It is an unchal-lenged shot at the basket from thefree-throw line.

TheNBAThrough the Ages The first professional basketball players challenged other teams and were paid$15 for each game. Professional basketball leagues didn’t last long until theNational Basketball League was formed in 1949. George Mikan, the first domi-nant big man in professional basketball, played for the Minneapolis Lakers andwas the game’s first true superstar. In the mid-1950s and 1960s, the BostonCeltics dominated professional basketball. Led by Bill Russell, they were thechampions for 11 of 13 years. The spectacular play by superstars such as JuliusErving, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson brought basketball to new heights in the1980s.

Enter Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s. Jordan led his team tosix championships in eight years, establishing the Bulls as one of the greatestdynasties in professional sports and Jordan as perhaps its greatest player ever.

Today, the rise in popularity of basketball throughout the world has brought anew influx of talent into the NBA. Great players from all over Europe are stars inthe NBA. The increase in international players continues to show that basketballis a truly a global game.

PlayoffsAfter a grueling 82-game season, the best teams of the NBA win the right to playon for the championship. The 16 playoff teams compete against each other infour rounds of games, each round being a best-of-seven series. The games arepressure-packed and exciting for players and spectators. The winner of eachseries is paired against another winner until the champion of the NationalBasketball Association is crowned.

Fantasy HoopsFantasy basketball allows a fan to act as an owner and coach ofhis own basketball franchise by selecting NBA players for his ownteam. Fans produce their starting lineups and make trades. Thestatistics produced by the selected players in real games deter-mine the points awarded to the fantasy team. Choosing the play-ers who perform the best could make a championship season.

WNBAIn 1996, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA)announced the formation of an 8-team league that began itsfirst season in June 1997. These women basketball playershave created a stir on the basketball scene. The league hasattracted a new audience of women and has expanded withteams in every region of the country. The WNBA has come along way in its brief history.

CollegeHoopsThe first five-on-five college basketball game was played in1896, when the University of Iowa invited student athletesfrom the University of Chicago. Chicago defeated Iowa 15-12,not exactly one of the high-scoring, high-flying games oftoday. By the turn of the 20th century, many colleges had bas-ketball teams and the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) was founded in 1906. The first NCAA Men’s CollegeBasketball Championship tournament was held in 1939 before5,500 fans with Oregon beating Ohio State, 46-33, to win thenational championship. Today, the NCAA BasketballTournament held in March is one of the nation’s favorite sport-ing events. “March Madness,” as it is commonly called, drawsmore than 700,000 fans. The first NCAA women’s basketballtournament was held in 1982 and is growing in popularity.

OlympicsMen’s basketball became an Olympic sport in 1936 at theBerlin Games. It was played outdoors on sand courts. Women’sOlympic basketball was introduced in 1974 during theMontreal games. The United States teams have dominated thesport in both men’s and women’s basketball. The games in theOlympics are closely followed by millions of people worldwide.

Basketball even offers one team of players who entertain while they play –The Harlem Globetrotters. They mix their basketball skills with comedy as partof their playing routine. They have played more than 20,000 games in morethan 100 countries before millions of fans, and they share their unique brandof basketball worldwide.

What comes to mind when you think about basketball? Is it a behind-the-back dribble you made on the playground, an acrobatic slam dunk

that you saw on television, or a game-saving steal in the finalsecond? Maybe you didn’t even realize that the games youplay are a laboratory for learning science and math. The sci-ence and math behind a basketball jump shot or grabbinga rebound can be fascinating.

In the 15th century, Galileo, an Italian scientist, made a study of objects thrown into the air. These objects,referred to as projectiles, travel up before falling down.Galileo was trying to accurately calculate the flight of a cannonball. Kings and their soldiers wanted to figure

out the path that cannonballs took so they could improvetheir chances in battle. Galileo discovered that the cannon-

ball’s path was determined by two motions, forward move-ment at a constant speed and movement up and then down

at changing speeds. The cannonballs followed a path called aparabola. It is the same path that basketballs take on the way to thehoop. What type of mathematical calculations do shooters make whenthey go up for a jump shot? They are thinking about how much force toput on their shot in order to score. Do you think that Galileo had thethree-point shot in mind when he was making his study?

Hang TimePerhaps the greatest basketball player of all time is Michael

Jordan. When he took off from the foul line on his way to apowerful slam dunk, it appeared that he was flying. But

even he was subject to the laws of gravity. Gravity, theforce that pulls objects together, was discovered bythe physicist Isaac Newton in the 17th century. Thestrength of the pull depends on the “mass” of theobject. The Earth is so massive that it has a strongpull to its center. Jordan’s jump depended on how

much force he could generate with his legs. He wouldbend his knees to get an extra push. If he could jump

high (and it takes a lot of energy to do that), he wouldstay in the air longer. It’s just like a rocket taking off. Jordan

also held on to the ball for as long as he could. He let go ofthe ball on the way down so it seemed that he was hanging in

mid-air. Finally, he pulled his legs up during the jump so it seemedhis jump was even higher. All this happened in less than a second.

Follow theBouncing BallGood ball handling will get a shooter into position to score. Playersdribble the ball to get closer to the basket or to move to the ideal spotfor a good scoring chance. They bounce the ball with one hand, put-ting a force on the ball with each swipe of the hand. You’ve probablyheard of the law of physics that says “for every action there is anequal and opposite reaction.” Dribbling a basketball is an example ofthat law, another discovery by Isaac Newton. Each time the basketball

hits the floor, it squashes slightlybefore springing back to its originalshape, releasing some energy. Thisspringing action, plus the momentumthe ball has when it hits the floor,pushes the ball back up to the player.How high a basketball bounces is aresult of its kinetic energy. Withoutthe force from the player’s hand, theball would not bounce as high. Thecycle continues as the player hits theball back down and applies newforce.

The bounce pass is a great way forplayers to pass the ball to their team-mates. They bounce the ball on thefloor in the direction of another play-er. The ball hits the floor at a 45-degree angle so it bounces to theteammate at 45 degrees in the oppo-site direction. This is a good positionfor taking control of the ball. A ballthrown at a 35-degree angle willbounce back at 35 degrees but maybe more difficult to handle. Thebounce pass is a difficult pass fordefensive players to guard againstbecause it is low to the ground.

Putting a spin on the ball changes theway a ball bounces. The ball alwaysbounces in the direction of the spin.Basketball players put a spin on theball when they dribble or when bank-ing a shot off the backboard. On abank shot, the spin makes the ballmove on a downward path into thebasket rather than away from the rim.Hold a ball in your hands and moveone hand down as you release theball, making the ball spin. If you moveyour right hand down, the ball willspin to the right. Move your righthand up and the ball moves to theleft.

Under the BoardsBasketball’s giants battle above the rim for control of theball. Because rebounding a missed shot is so important, probasketball’s best rebounders fight for position under thebackboard, timing their jump for the perfect moment whenthe ball bounces to them. They change their body positionto grab the rebound and they raise their arms, changingtheir center of gravity (the point around which the weightof an object is balanced). The players are able to get therebound and keep their balance as the force of gravity pullsthem back to the floor. Remember that gravity is the forceof attraction between two objects. If they lean or areknocked too far to one side, they will become unstable andfall. It’s a balancing act.

Roundball Stats Statistics are a collection of numerical information. In basketball, asin most sports, statistics tell a story about why games are won andlost, the strengths and weaknesses of a team, and who the bestplayers are. If you are studying statistics, it is important to collect asmuch information as possible because statistics can be misleading.

If you flipped a coin 10 times, how many tosses do you think wouldland on heads and how many on tails? Make a prediction and thenflip your coin 10 times. Did the coin land five times on heads andfive times on tails? The laws of probability say that would be thelikely result. What if your coin landed on heads eight times and ontails only twice? You may not have expected that to happen. Themore you flip your coin, the greater the chance that heads and tailswill come up an equal number of times. Tally the results of all theflips in the class. What are the results from your statistics? The factis that the more data you collect, the more accurate your informa-tion will be.

3. An official basketball is 30 inchesaround. That measure is called the “cir-cumference.” Ptolemy was an astronomerwho lived in ancient Egypt and who calcu-lated how to find the circumference of acircle. He measured the distance across

the center of a circle, called the “diame-ter.” He figured that by multiplying thediameter by the number 3.14, he wouldget the correct circumference of the cir-cle. He gave the number 3.14 the name“pi,” after a letter in the Greek alphabet.Since pi goes on forever, you can’t pindown the exact value of the last decimalplace. The formula for finding the circum-ference of a circle is C = Pd.(Circumference equals pi times the diame-ter). Find some circles in the newspaperand measure the diameter. Use the formu-la C=Pd to figure out the circumference ofeach circle.

In the thirdcolumn, compute the point spread, or difference betweenthe two scores, and in the fourth column, write the totalpoints scored by both teams. Find the scores for at leastthree other games.

Everybody Loves SportsWhether you enjoy playing the game, watching your favorite team on television, or seeing the athletes perform at the sta-dium or arena, chances are that you love sports. Sports are organized athletic activities, part of every culture, and they’vebeen around for years. The ancient Greeks played in sporting events for the same reasons that we play sports today. Peopleplay for fun or exercise or even relaxation. Others enjoy the thrill of playing for a victory. Fans follow their favorite sportsteam and cheer them on. No matter what, sports bring people together. Old and young, rich and poor, male and female,and people of every color are involved in sports activities. People play in city streets, in school gymnasiums, in suburbanparks, and on fields in the country.

The Joy ofLearningWe can learn a great deal participating in sports. We learn how to enjoy the win-ning and to accept the losing. It is “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.”We work hard to achieve an excellent performance and appreciate the outstandingaccomplishments of others. Before the game, you may consider preparing a healthy meal for your family. Go through the food ads and pick out the items you will need for a nutritious dinner. Make a shopping list and include the price of each item. Then find the total cost.

Teams and players establish a rivalry while competing against each other. What rivalries can you find in the newspaper? Rivals maybe in entertainment, politics, or business as well as the sports world. List these competitors and write brief descriptions of their com-petition and/or disagreements.

The government’s main recommendation is that you eat lots of fruits, vegetables, andwhole-grain foods. It also recommends that you limit sugars, most fats, and sodium (or salt).This version of the food pyramid suggests that you eat these foods in the following ways:

* Whole-grain foods: at most meals.

* Plant oils (such as olive, canola, soy, corn,sunflower, peanut, and other vegetable oils):as a “healthy” source of fats.

* Vegetables: in abundance.

* Fruit: 2 to 3 servings per day.

* Fish, poultry, and eggs: 0 to 2 servings per day.

* Nuts and legumes: 1 to 3 servings per day.

* Dairy products or calcium supplements: 1 to 2 servings per day.

* Red meat and butter: sparingly.

* White rice, white bread, potatoes, pasta, and sweets: sparingly.

The American Heart Associationalso recommends that you eat car-
