Oracle Corporation has come a long way to become the multinational technology company that it is today. Its rich history tracks its progress through the development and marketing of computer hardware systems, enterprise software and Oracle itself, the world renowned database technology.

• 1977 – Larry Ellison, Bob Miner & Ed Oates create Software Development Laboratories.

• 1978 – Oracle born, written in assembly language running on PDP-11 under RSX-11 in 129k of memory.

• 1979 – SDL rename themselves Relational Systems Inc. (RSI) and move to California. First commercial relational database released.

• 1981 – Umang Gupta joins RSI and creates the business plan.

• 1982 – RSI rename to Oracle Systems Corp. to align themselves with their main product.

• 1983 – Oracle database rewritten in C for portability, release of Oracle v3.

• 1984 – Oracle v4 released, introducing read consistency. Database software ported to PC platform in November.

• 1985 – Release of v5, making it one of the first RDBMSs to operate in client-server mode.

• 1986 – Oracle v5 MS-DOS released, and Oracle goes public with revenue of $55 million.

• 1987 – UNIX-based Oracle applications introduced.

• 1988 – Oracle v6 released with hot backups, embedded PL/SQL procedural engine within database and support for row-level locking.

• 1989 – Relocation to HQ in Redwood Shores, California with revenues reaching $584 million.

• 1990 – First ever loss in third quarter, unfortunately leading to job losses.

• 1992 – Oracle 7 released with application development tools, performance enhancements, and many other features.

• 1995 – Oracle becomes one of first large software companies to report an Internet Strategy.

• 1996 – Released Web Browser as part of Oracle PowerBrowser, moving towards web-enabled architecture.

• 1997 – Release first version of Discoverer, release Oracle v8 with Internet Technology, support for terabytes of data and SQL object technology. Also announce loyalty to Java platform.

• 1998 – Release Oracle Applications 2 and integrate Java Virtual Machine with Oracle Database. Oracle 8i and Oracle Application Server 4.0 released onto Linux.

• 1999 – Oracle Corporations offer first DBMS with XML support.

• 2000 – Oracle found the OracleMobile subsidiary. Oracle 9i released and application server released, and Oracle announce Internet File System (IFS) – later named Oracle Content Management.

• 2001 – Announcement that Oracle saved $1 billion by using its own business apps, and they become first to complete 3 terabyte TPC-H world record.

• 2002 – Offered the first database to pass 15 industry standard security evaluations.

• 2003 – Introduced Enterprise Grid Computing, to be released the following year. 08701 999 377

• 2004 – Agreement to acquire PeopleSoft for approximately $10 billion.

• 2005 – Reduction of combined workforce to 50,000, and announced purchase of Siebel for around $5.8 billion.

• 2006 – Acquire Portal Software, and and announced Unbreakable Linux.

• 2007 – File lawsuit against SAP for unfair competition, eventually winning $1.3 billion in 2010. In the same year, Oracle buys Agile Software Corporation.

• 2008 – Announce purchase of BEA Systems for $7.2 billion

• 2010 – Acquired Sun Microsystems and launched Enterprise Manager Operations Centre. Also acquired Phase Forward.

• 2011 – Fiscal Q11 revenues up 37% to $8.8 billion. Acquired a number of companies.

• 2012 – Continued acquisitions, including Collective Intellect and Involver.

• 2013 – Announced new in-memory applications for Oracle Hyperion, Oracle JD Edwards Enterprise One, Oracle Siebel, and Oracle E-Business Suite. Launched 12C, which is capable of providing cloud services with Oracle Database.
