Mailboxes were not the norm until 1923 when the Post Office Department mandated that all households have a mailbox or letter slot.

Curbside Mailboxes

Mailboxes made the postal service more efficient.

Now residential curbside mailboxes can be found in Tampa, Dallas and all over the country.

Mailboxes didn’t originally have a mandated

size or shape. This meant people could use just about

anything as their mailbox…which lead to some interesting interpretations.

Today, all mailboxes have a list of requirements in regards to height and the size of the door slot.
