Last year, Twin Ports shelters achieved their highest ever combined live release rate - one of the highest rates in the nation - when they placed 97% of admitted animals either into loving homes or with other rescue organizations. In comparison, 314 shelters in 31 communities nationwide had a combined average live release rate of 64% in 2011 as tracked by Maddie’s Fund, an organization helping to sustain and achieve a no-kill nation (www.maddiesfund.org). In 2010, Animal Allies launched the Campaign for Zero with the goal of eliminating euthanasia of all healthy cats and dogs entering Duluth shelters. By partnering with the City of Duluth shelter and local businesses, the organization achieved its goal that year and has continued to do so every year since. When Animal Allies began operating the City of Superior shelter in 2012, this campaign expanded to include the entire Twin Ports community. While Animal Allies strives to rehabilitate every animal possible, some that come into the shelter’s care are sick and suffering or are found to pose a significant risk to the health and safety of humans and other animals. Shelter staff work hard to find understanding owners, foster homes, and rescues that are able to help these cats and dogs, using euthanasia only as a last humane option. Since launching the Campaign for Zero in 2010, Animal Allies has eliminated the euthanasia of all healthy cats and dogs in the organization’s care and saved nearly all treatable, rehabilitateable, manageable and a significant number of what would typically be categorized as unhealthy/untreatable animals as well. The shelters acheived this astounding live release rate first and foremost by support from the community, which has driven progressive adoption, spay/neuter, and humane education programs. It has also been acheived by August 2013 WHAT IS A LIVE RELEASE RATE? A live release rate refers to the percentage of animals entering a shelter who are either adopted or transferred to another organization. In 2004, a group of animal welfare leaders from across the nation assembled to standardize terms used by animal shelters and rescue organizations. The resulting Asilomar Accords lay out a unified system that defines how to classify an animal as “Healthy,” “Treatable and Rehabilitatable,” “Treatable and Manageable,” or “Unhealthy and Untreatable.” Using these definitions, organizations enter data into a table that calculates their live release rate. The result is a uniform reporting system for all shelters that choose to use these accords. Of the data voluntarily submitted by thousands of animal shelters nationwide, Animal Allies boasts one of the highest live release rates for an organization of its size, which is consistent with the organization’s goal of placing every healthy animal with a new loving family or in another happy environment. WHAT IS A LIVE RELEASE RATE?A live release rate refers to the percentage of animals entering a shelter who are either adopted or transferred to another organization.

In 2004, a group of animal welfare leaders from across the nation assembled to standardize terms used by animal shelters and rescue organizations. The resulting Asilomar Accords lay out a unified system that defines how to classify an animal as “Healthy,” “Treatable and Rehabilitatable,” “Treatable and Manageable,” or “Unhealthy and Untreatable.” Using these definitions, organizations enter data into a table

that calculates their live release rate.

Congratulations to the City of Superior! The Superior City Council has dedicated a portion of Bear Creek Park to be the site of the new Superior/Douglas County animal shelter. The site selection process took longer than anticipated, but the end result is as close to perfect

as anyone could have hoped for. The chosen site has great visibility, access to walking trails, a peaceful park setting, and is a convenient location for Superior and Douglas County residents alike.

Selecting the Bear Creek site is the end result of lots of input and years of planning. It all started in 2008 when Superior’s then-Mayor, Dave Ross, began to explore the possibility of building a new animal shelter at the suggestion of City Councilor Mick MacKenzie (a supporter and leader of this project from day one). The city consulted the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and received a number of suggestions for the project in January 2010. In late 2010, all three existing animal rescue groups – Animal Allies Humane Society (AAHS), Animal Rescue Federation (ARF), and the Humane Society of Douglas County (HSDC) – joined the City of Superior in approving a recommendation to merge ARF and HSDC into AAHS. AAHS would then be contracted by the City of Superior to run a single animal shelter that would serve both the City of Superior and the rest of Douglas County.

In April 2011, newly elected Mayor Bruce Hagen voiced support for the project. A big hurdle was cleared when Superior bonded over $2 million toward the construction of the shelter. On January 1, 2012, ARF merged with AAHS and AAHS began operations of the existing animal shelter in Superior. When the new shelter is built and ready to open, HSDC will merge with AAHS as well.

The City of Superior considered a number of sites for the new shelter, but had difficulties finding a suitable location. Late in 2012, the Bear Creek site surfaced as the perfect spot.

Now the architectural plans are moving forward, the City of Superior and Douglas County are working on an agreement to share the expenses, and a capital campaign to “fill the gap” in construction costs is about to begin.

Animal Allies became involved in this project out of a desire to help homeless companion animals in the Twin Ports. The collaborative merger of ARF and HSDC with AAHS will allow all of us to care for lost, abandoned, and surrendered cats and dogs by pooling our resources, consolidating fundraising events, and bringing proven and successful adoption, spay/neuter, and humane education programs to people and animals in our community. We’ve already seen what can be achieved through cooperative efforts with the expansion of the Campaign for Zero, which now includes the city-owned, AAHS-operated shelter in Superior. Not a single healthy dog, cat, kitten or puppy was euthanized in Duluth or Superior shelters in 2012. That is a howling and purring success!

To continue these achievements, we need you. Securing financial gifts to fulfill the mission of Animal Allies is a continuous challenge and your donations provide food, shelter, medical and loving care to animals who have nowhere else to turn.

I humbly thank you for the gifts you have given, and ask you to remain committed to helping our homeless animals.

For the animals,

A PILE OF PEKES! This March, Animal Allies answered a plea for help when over twenty Pekingese and Shih-Tzu mixes were found in a home near International Falls. Eighteen of these dogs were transferred to Animal Allies in the hopes of finding them loving homes.

Many of the dogs needed specialized care and medical treatment for issues including severe matting, dental disease, and eye ailments. One female, Georgia, was pregnant and was placed in a foster home so she could give birth in a

comfortable and safe environment. Two-and-a-half weeks later, three little bundles of joy arrived!

The foster volunteer spent eight weeks caring for the mother and her puppies (who were named Anakin, Luke, and Yoda). The puppies were then neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and pronounced ready for adoption. Within one week, all three puppies found loving homes.

At the time of this article, Georgia has also been approved for adoption. We are confident that she will soon find her new family and the last of these eighteen rescued dogs will be forever home.

establishing relationships with other shelters and rescues and the implementation of a variety of initiatives including:

• A large network of volunteer foster families that nurture animals until they are ready for adoption, especially newborn kittens that require around-the-clock attention and care.

• Behavioral therapy to improve the behavior of anxious, aggressive, or unsociable animals.

• Extensive medical care for sick and injured homeless animals.

• The Barn Cat Adoption program, which relocates cats who are not good candidates for house pets to barns and warehouses where they can help out as mousers.

• Thorough efforts to find homes for senior pets and animals with special needs.

It is no easy feat to consistently place thousands of animals into loving homes. With your support, and that of other volunteers, members, donors, and animal lovers, Animal Allies will continue to help so many of the community’s abandoned, abused, and otherwise homeless cats and dogs find a happy home.

Animal Allies would like to thank two very special girls: Campbell and Katie. When these sisters hosted their birthday party at Animal Allies, they didn’t ask for new toys or cash for themselves but instead asked their guests to bring donations for homeless animals. Thanks to their generosity, the shelter received many gifts for the cats and dogs in their care.

By giving the animals the spotlight on their special day, these girls showed generosity beyond their years. Animal Allies relies on big-hearted people like Campbell and Katie

Volunteers put in over 13,500 hours through the end of May at our Duluth and Superior locations this year. This is the equivalent of 17 full time employees! A huge thank you goes out to our Dog and Cat Buddies, Office Assistants, Docents, Fosters, Humane Education Volunteers, Board and Committee Members, and Special Event and Community Outreach Volunteers. Thank you for all that you do for the animals! We couldn’t do it without each and every one of you.

DEVOTION AND FLEXIBILITY: WHO COULD ASK FOR MORE?

For over three years, Candy Madich has

been volunteering in a variety of ways with Animal Allies. Her flexibility has been a huge asset to the shelter because wherever she is needed, Candy is willing to help. Candy grooms, cleans, and cares for the many cats and kittens in our adoption program and even trains new Cat Buddy volunteers. She helps with the never-ending piles of dishes, assists with newsletter mailings and Humane Education activities, and is on our Programs and Operations Committee.

Candy and her husband Bob frequently lend a hand at special events throughout the year and are members of our Spay/Neuter Committee. Always friendly and upbeat, Candy does it all with a smile on her face and her positive attitude is contagious. When she is not at the shelter, Candy enjoys cuddling and spending time with her two rescue kitties, Luther and Forrest.

Help Adopters Find Their Newest Addition to the Family. Docents/Shelter Greeters are needed at the Duluth location Tuesday through Sunday from Noon to 6 pm and the Superior location Tuesday through Saturday from Noon to 6 pm to greet visitors, give tours of the shelter, answer questions, and help potential adopters find a new family member.

Cat Lovers Needed! We’re looking for Cat Buddies between the hours of 8 am and Noon who are willing to help keep our cat areas clean, occasionally groom, trim nails, socialize, and provide enrichment for the cats in our adoption program. Our cats and kittens will love you!

Most artwork was available for purchase at the 2013 Walk for Animals and a few special pieces were saved for the Fur Ball auction in October. All

proceeds are donated to Animal Allies, and more than $300 has been raised so far for adoption, spay/neuter, and humane education programs.

A big thank you to the UDAC artists, Breanna, and Kandiss! We look forward to working with you in 2014.

For the third year in a row, coordinators and artists at Art Junction (the arts program within UDAC’s Life Enrichment Services) donated their time and talents to help shelter animals. Beginning on February 20, artists visited the shelter twice a month to work on beautiful and fun art pieces with Animal Allies’ cats and dogs. OUR MOST SUCCESSFUL WALK YET!

Over 400 walkers and their pets – the highest number of participants yet – gathered at Bayfront Festival Park on June 8th for the short walk that goes a long way to help homeless animals. The weather was perfect, putting smiles on the fac-es of two- and four-legged walkers alike and attendees got to see a menagerie of unique animals including a pig, a rabbit, a goose, a tortoise, a bearded lizard, goats, and parrots!

By the end of the day, walkers raised over $30,000 to support Animal Allies’ adoption, spay/neuter, and humane education programs. What a success!

NORTHLAND SPAY/NEUTER EXPANDS FREE STERILIZATION SERVICES

Thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities®, Northland Spay/Neuter is expanding its service area for free spay and neuter surgeries to cat owners living in zip codes 55807 and 55812.

This initiative aims to lower intake in Duluth and Superior shelters and support Animal Allies’ ongoing commitment to zero euthanasia of healthy and treatable cats and dogs in the Twin Ports.

These free feline spay/neuter surgeries also include a rabies vaccination and microchip for residents living in zip codes 55802, 55805, 55806, 55807, 55812, and 54880.

“In this tough economy, we are very excited to offer spay/neuter surgeries valued at hundreds of dollars for free to qualifying pet

owners,” said Meggan Neve, CVT, Director of Program and Clinic Operations at Northland Spay/Neuter. “This program makes altering your pet easy and affordable.”

The clinic’s expert veterinary staff specializes in spay/neuter surgeries and has performed over 24,000 procedures since 2009. For more information, visit www.northlandspayneuter.org or call (218) 623-6342. Space is limited and free surgeries will only be offered until grant funding is exhausted.

ABOUT NORTHLAND SPAY/NEUTER Northland Spay/Neuter is a partnership of Animal Allies Humane Society and Twin Ports Spay/Neuter Clinic, PLLC. All veterinary

services are provided by Twin Ports Spay/Neuter Clinic, PLLC, an independent, veterinarian-owned medical practice. Northland Spay/Neuter is made possible by financial and administrative support from Animal Allies Humane Society.
