Joseph Hooker Correspondence Project A Guide to Reading and Searching Joseph Hooker's Letters Online This guide is designed to help users read and understand both the original letter and the letter transcript. There are also some tips for searching the letters online. Please be aware that search functionality on the Joseph Hooker Correspondence Website is currently limited. The website is a pilot and we are working on upgrading and improving it. As an additional finding aid a full list of the letters which make up the online correspondence can be found in an appendix at the end of this document. Tips for searching the letters Please note the current basic search interface is only a temporary facility provided for the initial pilot phase of the project. A more powerful and user friendly interface will be introduced later. Enter search terms into the box provided and then either press Return or click on Search to submit your search. This is free text search. If no results are retrieved try simplifying your search terms or being less specific about the particular person, place, plant etc. you may be interested in, for example try searching for a surname or genus only. Viewing the letters & transcripts Images Please note that when you select a letter, the page will display a thumbnail of each page of the complete letter from which you can select which page to view. Clicking on an individual page will present an enlarged image of the individual page alongside the transcript and summary (where available) and details of the letters date, who it was sent to, where it was sent from and the volume and copyright information. The viewer has a limited zoom function built in. To view a larger image of the entire selected letter page click on the link below the image which will open the image in a new window. To view subsequent pages click on the arrows in the centre of each image to move forwards and backwards through the letter. Transcripts All letters, with the exception of image only records also have a full transcript available. The transcript is viewable below each letter page. Please click on an individual letter page to access the complete transcript. The transcript displays all text from the original mss, including any text that has been struck through but is still legible. All transcripts provided should display pages in the correct order for reading, even where this has become confused in the configuration of the physical letter.

As the website is still in a pilot phase please consider all transcripts as works in progress and refer to

the images of the original if in doubt. We welcome people to contribute corrections to the

transcripts, though it may be some time before these can be reflected on the website. You can

contact the Joseph Hooker Correspondence Project Officer at [email protected] to submit

corrections.

Interpreting the transcript markup

[[page number]] :all page numbers are inserted within square brackets at the beginning of the page

text.

* endnote: all numbers preceded by an asterisk indicate an endnote, further explanation about the

text marked will be available as an endnote at the bottom of the transcription.

[text in square brackets] indicates an editorial insertion. Editorial insertions are most often provided

to clarify an abbreviation by expanding it, to correct any spelling that is so erroneous the meaning

might otherwise be unclear, or to correct place names to their modern usage or spelling. NOTE

where place names have changed completely rather than just in standardised spelling this may be

recorded as an endnote.

<inferred text> where text has been lost, usually because of damage to the manuscript, it can

sometime be inferred from the context, where such an inference has been made this is indicated by

placing the text in angle brackets.

[sic] following a word indicates that the word has been copied exactly from the letter even though it

may appear incorrect or misspelled, this is often used to indicate an archaic spelling has been used in

the letter and is not a typographical error in the transcript e.g. shewed[sic].

[?] a question mark in square brackets indicates that the interpretation of the preceding word is

uncertain, usually because the handwriting is particularly difficult to decipher, any question marks

not in square brackets are transcribed from the manuscript and are not editorial insertions.

[signature] this text alongside the signature on a letter indicates that the letter has been signed by

the author of the letter i.e. it is not a copy made later in another's hand.

Metadata fields

Sent by: Author of the letter. For the first phase of the project all letters included are authored by Sir

Joseph Dalton Hooker.

Sent from: Address or location letter was written from.

Sent to: Recipient of the letter.

Date: Date letter was originally sent. Date or parts of dates in square bracket denote that the

enclosed part of the date has been inferred. Dates or parts of dates immediately followed by a

question mark are uncertain interpretations, usually due to illegible handwriting.

Series: Group of documents within the archive to which the letter belongs. This field is an interactive

link. Click on the title of the series to display a list of all digitised letters in the series.

Page 3: A Guide to Reading and Searching Joseph Hooker's Letters ...

Joseph Hooker Correspondence Project

Language: Language in which the original letter is written. Where possible transcripts of foreign

language letters have been made available as English translations.

Extent: Number of pages and folios that make up the letter. 'Folio' is an archival term referring to

sheets of paper rather than individual pages. For example a '4 page letter over 1 folio' may have an

original composition as illustrated below. Letters such as this have been digitised on the basis of 1

page per image rather than 1 folio per image to make the reading order clear.

folio front:

folio reverse:

Project ID: Unique number assigned to the letter when catalogued and digitised as part of the

project

Finding Number: Reference number assigned to the letter by the archive or institution that owns it.

Please quote this number if requesting original items from the owner institution.

Repository: Archive or institution that holds the original letter.

Copyright: Intellectual property owner of the contents of the original letter. For an unpublished

letter this is typically the letter author or their descendants.

Image Credit: Owner of the copyright of the digitised image of the letter. Please seek permission

from the owner before reproducing images.

Summary: Description of the content of the letter containing key information such as names of

plants, people and places mentioned. This field is searchable through the free text search function.

Physical Description: Meanings of descriptions as listed... Original Mss [Manuscript]: Letter written in the hand of the original author. Letters signed by the original author have the text [signature] after the valediction to indicate this is a genuine author signature not a copy in another's hand. Mss [Manuscript] Copy : Handwritten letter, but not written in the hand of the original author. Some of Hooker's letters only exist in the Kew archive in the form of manuscript copies. These are often marked in pencil at the top of page 1, with the word 'copy'. If there is no explicit indication on the letter itself that it is a copy but it is clear from the handwriting or signature that this is the case it will be stated in an endnote. Mss copies have generally been made soon after receipt of the original to be circulated to friends and family. Mss copies of Hooker's letters are believed to have been written out variously by Hooker's mother (Lady Maria Hooker), his sisters (Maria and Elizabeth) and his wives (Frances and Hyacinth). Instances where comparisons with the original have been possible indicate that these letters are faithful to the content of the original though the language, phrasing and grammar are often corrected or refined.

Typescript Copy: Typed copy of a letter. The majority of typescript copies in the Kew archive are believed to have been produced during the research for Leonard Huxley's biography of Joseph Hooker Life & Letters of JD Hooker (1918). Prepared with the assistance of Hooker's wife Hyacinth. Where comparisons with original letters have been possible they indicate that passages of varying lengths have been omitted from the copies in some instances but the original language and phrasing have been copied faithfully. Photocopy: Photocopy of a letter. Photocopies of some of Hooker's letters have historically been provided to the Kew archive by Hooker's descendants, other repositories or auction houses. Images of these photocopies cannot be displayed due to copyright restrictions. They may have been included in the project database with a transcript only. Amanuensis: Original composition written in a hand not that of the author but in their words e.g.

letter written from dictation by the author or typed by a secretary.
