The Michigan Organic Food and Farm Alliance (MOFFA) rst published Eating Organically in 1999, one of Michigan’s rst guides to organic and local foods. The fth edition was released in September 2005.

This 55 page Guide features 317 listings for farms, farmers’ markets and related businesses, including 60 organic farms. It is not a complete list of all farms, markets and businesses offering local, organic foods in Michigan. We have included those businesses that made information available to us. If your business is not listed and you would like to be included in the future, contact us. If your farm or business information is incorrect, please let us know.

Because we know people are looking for quality foods grown or raised without toxic chemicals, hormones or antibiotics, in ways that protect the earth and support local communities, we have included notes from farms or businesses that describe their approach and philosophy. Organic farms are highlighted with this symbol:

Tips for Using This List

Search by county. Information is organized by county (see map of all Michigan counties.) If there are no listings for your county, consider those in surrounding areas.

Call before you go. Before you visit any location, call to conrm their information. We included details about farm products, locations, business hours, etc. based on information provided by the businesses, but these details can change week-to-week, during a season or from year-to-year.

Although we reviewed these listings, MOFFA has not veried or validated the farm and business information.

Finding an organic farm. Under the federal National Organic Program (NOP), a farm can market its products as organic only if they are certied (unless exempt under the rule). Certication is a process that requires farms to follow certain production practices, keep records, and be inspected by an independent certication agency. Farms that sell less than $5000 per year may be exempt from the requirement for certication, but are still required to follow all recordkeeping and other rules of the NOP.

We have identied those who are certied organic with a special symbol, and we list the name of their certication agency. Certication information can change; ask about current certication status.

Farms that are not certied organic sometimes say they follow organic practices, or they may have the word ‘organic’ in their farm name. This is not the same as being a certied organic farm, so ask questions. If you have concerns about use of pesticides, fertilizers, synthetic chemicals, hormones or other animal treatments, ask the farmer to explain his or her practices. Most farmers will be glad to have an informed and interested customer.
