Recent investments in WalesNuclear Power Investment, North Wales – November 2012HitachihascompletedtheacquisitionofHorizonNuclearPowerfromRWEandE.ON.HitachiwillnowstartleadingaprogrammeofbuildingnewnuclearpowerplantsintheUnitedKingdom,includingoneonAnglesey,NorthWales.Inaddition,HitachihasalsoannouncedthattwoleadingBritishcompanies,BabcockInternationalandRollsRoyce,havesignedMOUstojoinHitachitoplan and deliver the programme.

TheWelshGovernmentisalreadyworkingwithNetworkRailtoplanhowthisinvestmentwillbedelivered,andwillsecurethemaximumeconomicandcommunitybenefitsfromtheworkinvolved.
A456 – Heads of the Valleys Road Improvements – December 2012TheWelshGovernmenthasannouncedplanstocreateadualcarriagewayattheheadsoftheSouthWalesValleys.Apartnershipwiththeprivatesectorwillgenerate£300mtowidenthefinaltwosectionsoftheA465.ItwillmeantheroadfromNeathtoAbergavennyisturnedintoadualcarriagewayby2020asplanned.TheWelshGovernmentwillsetupaschemethatwillraise£300mofprivatefinance,whichitwillrepayover30years.

Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme – December 2012TheWelshGovernmentannouncedplanstoextendtheLocalGovernmentBorrowingInitiative,inpartnershipwithlocalauthorities,tothe21stCenturySchoolsProgrammewhichwouldacceleratearound£200mofinvestmentinimprovementsto new school buildings throughout Wales.

Sustainable Building Envelope Centre (SBEC)–fundedbyTataSteel,theLCRIandWelshGovernment,SBEC’sfocusisonacceleratingthedevelopmentoflowandzerocarbonsolutionsforthebuiltenvironmentusingsteelincombinationwithothermaterials.ThisinvolvesworkingcloselywithotherWelshtechnologycompaniesanddevelopingsupplychainsfortheinstallationandmaintenanceofanysolutionsthatemerge.

TheWelsh School of Architecture (CardiffUniversity)istheleadingarchitectureschoolintheUKwithover25yearspioneeringresearchinlowcarbondesignandsustainabilityinthebuiltenvironment.ItsresearchpartnershipsincludeworkwiththeHongKongRealEstateDevelopmentAssociation(REDA).Thispartnershiphelpspropertydevelopersassesstheoverallenvironmentalperformanceandenergyimpactofabuildingduringconstructionanduse.
TheCentre for Research in the Built Environment (CRiBE) pushes forward the sustainable design, construction and operation of the builtenvironment.CRiBEhasdevelopedaninter-disciplinarymodelofsustainabledesignanddevelopmentthatbringstogetherarchitects, engineers, planners and social and environmental scientists. The Sustainable Product Engineering Centre for Innovative Functional Industrial Coatings (SPECIFIC)–SPECIFICisanewInnovationandKnowledgeCentreledbySwanseaUniversityandTataSteel.ItisfundedbytheTechnologyStrategyBoard(TSB),theEngineering&PhysicalSciencesResearchCouncil,(EPSRC),andtheWelshGovernmentaswellasthemainpartners.
Thesharedvisionistodevelopfunctionalcoatedsteelandglassproductsforroofsandwallsthatgenerate,storeandreleaserenewableenergy–transformingbuildingsintopowerstationsanddeliveringsignificantenvironmentalandeconomicbenefits.Theprojecthascreatedaworld-classcentrebasedatBaglaninWales,wherebreakthroughtechnologyisscaledup,resultinginthe creation of a new manufacturing stream to create new materials bringing a wide range of sustainable solutions, such as low carbonenergygenerationandstorageinbuildings.Thesewillbringaboutthereductionofcarbondioxideemissionsandalsoencourage economic growth.

Overseas market:InternationalvisitorsarearelativelyhighspendingmarketbuthistoricallyhavebeenoflowerimportanceforWales,accountingforjust8%ofallstayingtripsand16%ofallstayingvisitorexpenditure.Scotland,IrelandandtheEnglishregionscurrentlyattractsignificantlymoreinternationalvisitorsthanWales.

•In2011,therewere9.7millionovernighttripstoWalesbyGBresidents.Theassociatedspendwas£1,734million.
•75%ofGBvisitorstoWalescameforaholiday,12%tovisitfriendsorrelativesand10%onbusiness.
•AmongtheregionsofWales,NorthWalesattractedthelargestshareofovernightGBtouristsonaholiday.ThemajorityofovernightbusinesstripsoccurredinSouthEastWales.
•Walesattracted879,000internationalvisitorsspending£328millionduring2011.
•ThefourtopgeneratingcountriesforoverseastourismtoWalesweretheRepublicofIreland,France,GermanyandtheUSA.
•42%ofInternationalvisitorswereonaholidaytrip,36%werevisitingfriendsorrelativesand16%wereonbusinessduring2011.
•Intotalthereweresome10.6millionovernightvisitorstoWalesspendingnearly£2.1billionduring2011.
•TheGreatBritainDayVisitssurveyindicatedthatexpenditurebydaytrippersinWalesamountedtoover£2.9billionin2011.
•TheWelshEconomyResearchUnit(WERU)atCardiffUniversityhasrecentlyupdatedtheWalesTourismSatelliteAccount(TSA)worktoa2007base.ItspurposeistoprovideamoreaccurateassessmentofthecontributionofTourismtotheeconomy.ItfollowsaninternationallyacceptedmethodologyapprovedbytheUnitedNationsWorldTourismOrganization(UNWTO).
•Thetoplineresultsindicatedtotalannualtourismdemandofaround£4.2billionandGrossValueAdded(GVA)byTourismof £1.8billion.Thisequatesto4.3%oftotaldirectGVAfortheWelsheconomy.Thesefigurescomparewiththefollowingfor TSA2000:£3.5billionfordemand,£1.1billioninrespectofGVAand3.7%ofdirectGVA.
