MeridianHealth.com 1-800-DOCTORS 19 TERRI BERGRUD HAS TRIED MANY TREATMENTS OVER THE YEARS FOR HER VARICOSE veins. Varicose veins, a common, non-life-threatening venous disease, are swollen veins in the leg that occur when the valves that move blood to the heart cannot close properly and start to leak, causing veins to balloon. The main underlying cause for both spider veins and ropy varicose veins is genetics; however, childbirth, obesity, age, and lack of activity can all be contributing factors. After the birth of her fourth child, Terri began to notice spider veins — a common, mild variation of varicose veins that appear as twisted red, purple, or blue veins — on both of her legs. Unsettled with the appearance of her legs, she sought treatment. “I saw two dermatologists who treated me three times for my spider veins,” Terri says. ”After going for the third time and seeing no results, I thought it was hopeless.” In late 2012, Terri began to notice that her leg felt heavy and there was a painful burning sensation. She came across an ad in a local newspaper for Lawrence Mueller, M.D, a fellowship trained vascular surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Terri decided to schedule a consultation. During her consult, Dr. Mueller found a malfunctioning feeder vein. “While Dr. Mueller was performing an ultrasound, he pointed the sources of my vein problems out on a flat-screen TV,” Terri says. “It was comforting having him explain the source of the problem.” In January 2013, Dr. Mueller told Terri he planned to treat her vein by sealing it with radiofrequency ablation, the VNUS Closure procedure. Terri had minimal discomfort during this office procedure, which took only 30 minutes. Terri was able to drive herself home afterward and was fully recovered within two weeks. Since the treatment for varicose veins was so successful, she decided to have Dr. Mueller look at her spider veins. After a consult, he was confident that he could treat her spider veins over the course of a couple of visits. After just two visits with Dr. Mueller, Terri’s spider veins had finally disappeared. “I was convinced that I would have to live with spider veins forever,” says Terri. “My legs are proof that Dr. Mueller can make them disappear!” by Travis Taylor Terri enjoys spending time with her family, shopping, and going to the Allenhurst Beach Club.
