“The soldiers pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry Jesus’ Cross” (Mk 15:21)

It was customary to take a zig-zagged route to the site of crucifixion to make a spectacle of the condemned criminal. Jerusalem’s streets were narrow and winding and because of Passover, very crowded. Here I see the cross for the first time. Normally, just the crossbeam was carried. The vertical beam was already fixed in place at the site. An ominous chord is sounded in that Jesus didn’t carry his own cross, as was customary. Apparently he had been beaten so badly in the scourging, he was unable to do this. Think about Simon the Cyrene. It wasn’t as though the Roman soldiers had asked for a volunteer and Simon had raised his had saying, “I’ll do it.” He was simply passing by and out of the blue he was “pressed into service” to carry the cross. A lot of crosses come that way. Why this? Why me? Simon should be the patron saint for those who carry these kinds of crosses. He is given no introduction. No farewell. He is never seen again. He carried the cross, not knowing why, or where he was going. But he wasn’t lost. He was following the Lord.

Easter Mass Schedule

2018 Tri-Parish Lenten Mission Tri-Parish Lenten Mission St. Mark Catholic Church 7:00 p.m. March 18th, 19th and 20th

Starting this Sunday everning, come and join fellow parishioners of St. Mark, St. Roch and St. Barnabas for a renewal of hearts and spirits as we ready ourselves for the great feast of Easter. There will be a free will offering and light reception at the

end of each evening. Gifted authors and speakers Deacons Eddie Ensley and Robert Hermann will take us on a contemplative journey...learn to pray as Jesus and the early Christians prayed “and you will find rest for your souls”. Nightly Topics include: ~ How to cope with the hurts of life through letting God heal us in the quiet of prayer. ~ Mary as model of prayer and discipleship showing us the way to true Christian joy. ~ Moving beyond bitterness to reconciliation and peace in our relationships. ~ Learning how to pray again and discovering the font of Christian life.

Condolences

“For even the Son of Man

did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45 At St. Mark there are many ways that parishioners are able to use the gifts, that the Holy Spirit of God has bestowed on each of us to serve our fellow brothers and sisters as Jesus in the Gospel calls on each of us to do. The Pastoral Council would like to ask parishioners to consider volunteering their time and talent to an important area of service; Communication. The St. Mark parish website and bulletin are maintained and put together each week by parish volunteers working along side the parish office staff, and more volunteers are always welcomed. If you have any background or interest in web management, web design, or writing, the council would ask that you pray and consider contacting David Olivares (317-603-3517) to volunteer to help with either the parish website, bulletin, or both. The more hands that we have helping the better these two important platforms of communication can be for not only the St. Mark parish community, but the community outside St. Mark as well.

We pray for the repose of the soul of ….. Elizabeth Price

St. Mark extends condolences to her family. May God grant eternal rest to her and His consolation to her family and friends. May Elizabeth’s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

The Holy Places collection will be taken up in most Catholic parishes around the world on Friday, March 30th, Good Friday. This collection will aid Christian parishes and their outreaches in the Holy Land. This initiative has been an annual tradition in the Church since its institution by Blessed Pope Paul VI. According to him the collection is “not only for the Holy Places above all those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities.” These funds will be used to help the parochial schools, hospitals, and community centers to protect and care for their communities, which often include refugees, asylum-seekers, children, and victims of war. “As we prepare for Easter, let us renew our commitment to becoming artisans of peace, praying and working that peace may dwell in the heart of every person, especially our brothers and sisters of the Holy Land and the Middle East.”
