(ith pipe welding this t!pe of imperfection ma! cause effects in the fluid flow that can cause erosion and)or corrosion problems. Common causes Penetration becomes e$cessive when the *oint gap is too large+ the root faces are too small+ the heat input to the *oint is too high or a combination of these causes. Acceptance he criteria which sets the level of acceptable penetration depends primaril! on the application code or specification. , 2/1 %Class 2 arc welding& re"uires that the 0penetration bead shall not e$ceed mm for pipes up to and including 13mm bore or 4mm for pipes over 13mm bore0. , 24 %Class 1 arc welding& gives specific limits for smaller diameters pipes+ eg for p ipe si5e 2-3mm the ma$imum allowed bore penetration is 2.mm. A6# ,1. bases acceptabilit! on the nominal thickness of the weld+ for instance+ allowing for a thickness range of 1-2mm up to 7mm of protrusion. 8owever+ A 6# notes that 0more stringent criteria ma! be specified in the engineering design0.
