It flushes out all the garbage and gives the digestive system a break from all the other stuff I put into it. Like Eizen, after cleansing, I usually feel motivated to eat healthier and shrink my portion sizes. Even a 24-hour cleanse can do wonders, so I like to do some sort of cleanse at least once a quarter—at the start of each new season—and I encourage you to do the same! For those of you worried about doing a cleanse because you fear being hungry, here’s an interesting fact. It’s not really a shortage of calories that makes you hungry—it’s a shortage of nutrients, water, and fiber. The idea behind a cleanse is to cut all the empty calories from your diet and pack in the vitamins, liquids, and other goodies. If your body is nourished, you can live off of very little food and feel very energized. It took me a while to come around to the idea of doing a cleanse. I love food, and I’m a big snacker. My family tends to overindulge, so I’ve never been very good about portion control either. The idea of eating nothing more than an half cup of kale a day sounded like torture. So the first cleanse I did was a 3-day juice cleanse I bought on Groupon. Ever since I tried it, I’ve been doing them a couple times a year. A juice cleanse saturates your system with nutrients and antioxidants and purifies your body of built-up toxins. It’s the perfect way to flush your system or jump-start a weight-loss regimen. The best way to do it is to start by drinking eight glasses of water per day for three days before the cleanse. I cut out junk food and sugary drinks during this time. Then, during the cleanse (3 to 5 days), I start each day with a full glass of water, followed by 3 to 6 fruit and vegetable juices consumed every 2 to 4 hours, depending on my hunger level. If I feel hungry, I add a fiber supplement. Post cleanse, when my body is jumpstarted into health mode, I continue drinking eight glasses of water per day, supplemented by plenty of fruits and greens. This cleanse is one of the best things to keep me eating healthy and feeling energized. There are many other great cleanses out there. If you are thinking of trying one, be sure to choose one with natural ingredients. I don’t recommend a detox that makes you take appetite suppressants, artificial metabolism boosters, or weight loss pills. The point is not to lose weight, it’s to get healthy and stay that way. Make sure to check with your doctor first if you have any major health issues. And if you have a partner, friend, or colleague to do the cleanse with, it will make it a lot easier to stick with it. If you have any questions about detoxing, feel free to call the office and ask me any questions you have. I can even refer you to a detox coach if you’d like. As you probably figure, I’m a big believer and I’d love to make some positive changes to your health. A recent study performed by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) surveyed 5,300 healthy Americans about their eating and drinking habits. Data from the survey showed that drinking one soda per day can cost the body 4.5 years of aging over a lifetime—the same amount lost by smoking. Spring officially sprang on March 20, which means that many of you are already deep within the throes of spring cleaning. But while you’re busy combing through your closet and sweeping out your garage, keep in mind that spring cleaning doesn’t have to be confined to your home. In fact, it shouldn’t be. It should extend to all areas of your life, from your office to your house, to your body, and it should probably take place more than once a year. Here at the office, we kicked off the season by starting fresh in a new space (if you haven’t already, stop on by and check out our new office!). But we also kept the spirit of spring cleaning alive by taking, as a team, a ten-day vegan cleanse. Our awesome hygienist, Eizen, suggested we all try the Purium cleanse that he was doing. The cleanse helped him lose weight, cut out caffeine, and live a healthier lifestyle, so he wanted to share the experience with the rest of us. He also thought it would be a great team building exercise. And trust me, few things build relationships faster than struggling through the same intense craving for a piece of chocolate and a coffee. But when all was said and done, the results from the cleanse were great. We were able to share our ups and downs, our successes and failures, and our desires for something other than a protein shake. Some people felt happy and energized, while others felt more moody and lethargic. In the end, we were all glad to have gone through with it, and one staff member even lost 11 pounds. This cell degeneration can lead to diabetes, heart disease and certain forms of cancer. So not only does soda add to your waistline and increase your chances of diabetes, but it can actually take years off your life. Although we all know that those colas in the fridge are unhealthy, here are a few unexpected uses for Coca Cola or Sprite that you may not be aware of. This way you can still get some use out of them. REMOVE RUST: For rust-covered objects, simply soak them in Coke overnight, then scrub them in the morning. The rust should come right off. CLEANING CLOTHES: Coca-Cola is a very inexpensive stain remover. Simply pour a can on any soiled or stained areas, then throw them in the wash. It will also work on stubborn stains like grease or blood. RELIEF FROM STINGS AND BITES: Coke can help alleviate the pain of different types of stings. Pour the beverage on bee, jellyfish, or mosquito bites and feel the relief. This is especially useful if you don’t have any topical ointment on hand. ELIMINATE SKUNK ODOR: Mix a can of Coca-Cola with some dish soap in a bucket of water. If you’re in need of a stronger solution, you can add hydrogen peroxide or baking soda. You can soak your clothes in the solution or sponge your skin and shower afterwards. TOILET CLEANER: Pour a can of Coke in your toilet and let it sit for a few minutes. Scrub the bowl as you normally would. Your cleaning time should be cut dramatically. Ways to Use Soda 773-975-6666 | 1 4 | wrigleyvilledental.com 3256 N. HIDDEN RISKS FOR DIABETICS

PLAYGROUND WORKOUTS

DIRECTIONS

Bring stock, quinoa, curry powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the quinoa is tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Once done, scrape the quinoa into a shallow dish and allow to cool to room temperature. Stir in the mango and green onions. Serve either at room temperature or cold.

Spring truly starts in April with flowers, showers, and… Oral Cancer Awareness? That’s right, April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. There is no better time than springtime to get on top of your health—and that includes visiting your dentist, especially if you have concerns about any

We all know that we’re supposed to brush and floss every day. It’s been drilled into us since we were kids. But why exactly do we need to? Two words: gum disease. And if you’re one of the 26 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes, you need to pay special attention. The most common side effects of diabetes include nerve issues and higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney problems... but gum disease (a.k.a. periodontitis) holds one of the top spots on that list as well.

Periodontitis is an evil that those with diabetes should be more aware of. What is periodontitis? In short, it’s a bacterial infection in the gums that could spread to other parts of the body. Diabetes causes a weaker immune system, so it takes longer for you to fight bacteria and infection. It starts with bleeding gums while brushing, then pain when you chew, but things get really bad when your gums become floppy and begin to pull away from your teeth. Deep pockets form, fill with pus, and, if left untreated, can cause your teeth to fall out. Gross, right? Not to mention painful.

If that doesn’t scare you into action, this will: periodontitis is not only a risk for those with diabetes, but it can also cause diabetes to get worse. However, there are ways to help prevent it:

abnormalities in your mouth or throat. Some people think that oral cancer is rare, but more than 42,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. Though the rate of oral cancer increases in those over 50 who smoke and excessively drink, it can happen to anyone. Another

BACK TO BASICS. Be diligent when it comes to taking care of your teeth and gums. This means brushing twice a day AND flossing. But don’t just run the brush across the front of your teeth and call it a day; work the bristles between your gum line and your teeth, and behind your teeth. When you’re done, FLOSS!

WATCH YOUR GLUCOSE LEVELS. You should keep your blood sugar levels regulated throughout the day. The more regular and consistent you keep your glucose levels, the lower your risk of developing periodontitis. This means staying away from sugary and high glycemic foods.

REGULAR CHECKUPS. Dentists are trained to catch the earliest signs of any gum disease. By seeing your dentist at least twice a year, you can help keep your mouth free of bad bacteria.

You’ve probably heard it many times before, but make sure (especially if you have diabetes) that you exercise, eat healthfully, keep your glucose under control, and watch your cholesterol. Unfortunately, being diabetic increases your risk for many things—don’t make “gum disease” just one more thing you have to put up with. See your doctors regularly and take care of your health. That means your teeth too.

Taking the kids to the park? Sneak in a quick workout of your own using the equipment at hand—no gym membership necessary!

SWINGS: Remember when you wanted to make your toes touch the sky? Adults can join in, too. Don’t be afraid to hop on and pump your way to the top. Swinging for five to ten minutes while keeping up a steady position at the top is a great warm-up. Lean back as much as you can without getting dizzy, and focus on using your abs to keep you forward and balanced. When you’re done, use one arm at a time to push your children and keep off those flabby “bat-wings.”

SLIDES: Slides aren’t just for kids. Take the stairs two at a time, and after sliding down, turn around to catch your child, lifting him or her high into the sky at the bottom for a good upper body workout.

MONKEY BARS: If swinging from rung to rung is too difficult, use the outside bar for pull-ups, both palms out and palms in.

STEPS: For these, you can use the bottom of a slide or the steps. Go up with your left foot, and then follow with the rest of your body, tapping your right foot beside your left before coming back down. Repeat on the other side at varying speeds.

PARK BENCH: Use the back of the park bench for push-ups. Grasp the bench just over shoulder-width apart and walk your feet back so that your body is diagonal. Lower yourself down for push-ups while keeping your abs tight and your torso and legs in line. Repeat 15 times.

There’s no job busier than being a mom. Treat yourself and your body with a playground workout built just for you.

factor that greatly increases a non-smoking, younger person’s chance of oral cancer is human papilloma virus (HPV), which is sexually transmitted and usually doesn't have any symptoms.

Only a little over 64 percent of those diagnosed with oral cancer will survive past five years, mainly because the cancer is usually discovered late in its development. Most oral cancers are hidden on the side of the tongue or the back of the mouth, places hard to see during routine self exams.

If you do find something suspicious, here’s what you can do. Try to take a picture of it or measure it to figure out the size. For the next 2 weeks, place coconut oil on the spot a few times a day. Coconut oil has healing properties that will speed up healing, and works really well on areas of trauma… cheek bite, corn chip piercing the gum, flossing injury, etc. Try not to touch the area during

the day. Most suspicious spots will go away within 2 weeks. If it is still there, and doesn’t look any smaller in size and there is no change in color, go visit your dentist. Dentists are trained to diagnose oral cancer. Even though your concern might turn out to be something simple and noncancerous, a visit to the dentist could save your life.

The main focus of Oral Cancer Awareness Month is to make you aware of this cancer and to emphasize the importance of early detection. Keeping your body healthy with proper hygiene, good nutrition, exercise, and regular dental visits will amp up your defense against oral cancer.
