BECOMING THE BOSS
PLAY THE YOUNG BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN IN SEARCH FOR ROCK & ROLL FAME
It’s 1969. You are 19 and left in small town Freehold, New Jersey with a few bucks and a guitar. And the whole life in front of you. You only have one dream; a life of ROCK AND ROLL. You have a notable talent and an untamable will. But New York City is a million miles away and nobody passes New Jersey to spot the next star.
Your first step towards fame is to go to the board-walk town of Asbury Park where an arising rock and roll community is developing. This is the place to hone your talent, meet fellow die-hard rock and roll musicians, form a band and with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work get that breakthrough?

GREETINGS FROM ASBURY PARK, NJ
- 1973
I stood stone-like at midnight, suspended in my masquerade
I combed my hair till it was just
right and commanded the night brigade
I was open to pain and crossed by the rain and I walked on a crooked crutch
I strolled all alone through a fallout zone and come out with my
soul untouched
I hid in the clouded wrath of the crowd, but when they said, "Sit
down," I stood up Ooh... growin' up

You can also get a “floating” Hit Star at David Sancious’ Mother’s Garage or through a Tarot Card. The Hit Stars can be used on any track and cannot be lost once you have them - even if you lose the track.

INSTRUCTIONS - THE BALLS
You collect inspiration every time you land on an Event Square. On some Action Squares (Temporary home, The Boardwalk and Petillo Guitars) inspiration can be exchanged for songs. Exchange 5 Inspiration Balls for a song from the pile of Track Cards. You can have a no more than 10 Inspiration Balls at any given time.
IMPORTANT: If you have 10 Inspiration Balls you may (instead of picking two Track Cards from the pile) choose to pick one song from the pile and then swap a song with another player (your choice who). See “Swapping”.
BLACK BALLSYou continuously have to fight dark thoughts. If you have 10 Black Balls, you are paralyzed. Wait one round and let go of 3 Black Balls. You may at any time when it is your turn, drop 3 Black Balls and wait a round.
NOTE: You must have at least 3 Black Balls to voluntarily wait one round and drop 3 Balls.
It may be advantageous to wait one round or more to time your arrival at the Action Squares
with a SWAP icon.
!
QUALITY BALLSImprove your quality by playing gigs or rehearsing with your band at The Garage of David Sancious’ Mother. You can have no more than 10 Quality Balls at any given time.
IMAGE BALLSImprove your image by playing gigs. You can have no more than 10 Image Balls at any given time.
GIG BALLSKeep track of the number of gigs you have played. Only important to monitor until you have reached 3, at which point you may enter Battle of the Bands. Although it does not matter for the game play afterwards, it remains a measure of personal success.

INSTRUCTIONS - ASBURY PARKGETTING AROUND
ASBURY PARK & SURROUNDINGSFREEHOLD: The town where you lived your whole life – and don’t want to spend another second.
ASBURY PARK: The coastal town where the music scene is arising, where you feel at home and the setting of the main part of the game.
BELMAR: The Garage of David Sancious’ mother close to E Street where you have a place to rehearse.
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA: The place to be and play gigs for various reasons. Your manager Tinker’s right hand, Billy Alexander went there to study and convinced Tinker to let him arrange a free concert in a public park to pave the way for future payed gigs – and it worked. You have a huge fan base in Virginia. It is vital not to “overplay” the place, though.
EVENT SQUARES
On Event Squares you always take 1 Black Ball, 1 Inspira-tion Ball and an Event Card.
EDGE OF TOWN
?
ACTION SQUARES
On Action Squares you do the action. On some Action Squa-res you can play a gig. Inspect the Gig Board and make your choice.
RECRUITMENT
THE UPSTAGE CLUB
SWAPPINGOn certain Action Squares (marked with a SWAP icon) you can – besides doing the action – swap a Band Card or a Track Card with another player who is there at the same time.
However, both you and the player you wish to swap with need to have at least 3 cards of the kind you wish to swap.
HOW? You randomly pick a Track Card or Band Card of your choice and in exchange give the other player a similar card of your choice. Should more than one player be at the “swapping action square”, You decide, who you would like to plunder.
NOTE: Some Tarot Cards may be able to cancel the swapping.
SWAP
GETTING OUT OF NEW JERSEYWhen you have what is needed to go to California (see map) you may enter the orange track starting from Challenger Eastern Surfboards (Tinker’s).
NOTE: If you lose a band member at the Parking Lot on the way to Califor-nia – and end up not going there because you don’t have what you need – the member must wait at the Parking Lot until you come back from Califor-nia (at Tinker’s). You can still only have five band members (including the one waiting). You can only lose one band member at the time.
Consider building up a buffer since
you can lose things on the way to California.
!

INSTRUCTIONS - WINNING THE GAMECALIFORNIACalifornia seems to be the place at the time, if your hope is to be signed by a record label. Here you can test yourself against some of the best bands in the country - and reunite with your parents.
Tinker knows a guy who is into music and besides that, is leading the kitchen at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. A popular getaway-meditation spot for the well-off hippies, which has attracted The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel and Joan Baez.
In 1969 Esalen needs a band to play on New Year’s Eve to round off the 1960s.
And so they went; Bruce and Tinker in Tinker’s pickup and Vinnie Roslin, Vini Lopez and Danny Federici in a station car.
NOTE: If you don’t meet the requirements for California once you try to enter, you must go to Asbury Avenue instead.
NEW YORK CITYYou get the chance of your life: an audition at Columbia Records in New York City. Only a one-hour drive from Asbury Park but to most people it feels like going to the moon.
NOTE: If you don’t meet the requirements for New York City once you try to enter, you must go to Asbury Avenue instead.
Before you go to New York City, consider not only meeting the requirements to enter New York
City (see map), but also to go to the audition and maybe even to record your breakthrough album immediately after the audition.
!
When another player returns from California and plans to go
straight to New York City you may try to intercept and plunder the player for great tracks or band
members at Tinker’s.
!
WINNING THE GAMEThe first player to record an album in New York City and to make the front page of both Time Magazine and Newsweek the same week (October 27th, 1975) wins the game.

BEHIND THE GAME
ABOUT US
We are two high-school friends from Denmark – now in our early 40s. We are both huge fans of Springsteen and the rest of the band and have seen him/them live numerous times in Denmark, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, UK and USA.
We are not locals, but we have a huge interest in the history and culture of Asbury Park and rock and roll in general. Our passion has taken us to Asbury Park and Freehold (and even Flemington) in the footsteps of Springsteen. We view this game as our little tribute.
If people will enjoy playing the game half as much as we have enjoyed developing it, we'd be truly thrilled.
If you have any questions, suggestions or comments please let us know:
Facebook.com/becoming-the-boss or [email protected]
Special thanks to Sofie Asplund for the making of this homepage and to those who helped along the way.
ABOUT THE GAMEDeveloping this game has until recently been an entertaining hobby project for us. But having played and refined the game over and over again, we believe it is worth sharing with fellow fans. We hope you find it fun, educating, exciting and in the spirit of history.
Maybe one day it could be released as a real board game. Until then get your scissors out to play this print & play version.
And if you ARE The Boss, let us know and we will send you a printed version straight away. Enjoy,
Søren Kitaj & Knud Jønsson
