What is V3
V3 - Framework to Enable Enriched Training Experience
[ 1/18 ]Tomáš Pitner et al. ICL Conference, Villach, Austria, Sept 27-29, 2006
Versatile Vocational and educational training Vehicle (V3)
– Goal: design, implement, deploy, evaluate and exploit a versatile, user-friendly, ICT-based Vocational and Educational Training (VET) framework suited for lifelong learning activities.
– Funding: EU Leonardo Programme– Further info:

Motivation
V3 - Framework to Enable Enriched Training Experience
[ 2/18 ]Tomáš Pitner et al. ICL Conference, Villach, Austria, Sept 27-29, 2006
Lisbon European Council (March 2000)– Europeans need to increase professional
skills and employability – number of innovative tools for generating
training contents emerged– they not succeeded in the long run, due to a
lack of versatility and user-friendliness
Building a User-Friendly Training Framework

As a conclusion, the ambition of V3 is– design and implement a versatile, user-friendly
training framework – requiring a limited investment from the trainer – achieve a performing competence building
process with the trainees

The V3 functionality (Trainer)
– Seminars will be recorded with the help of an open-source, add-on software merging screen and voice activities
– Screenshots are recorded, embedding not only slides, but also demonstrations, annotations...

The V3 functionality (Server)– upload the recording as audiovisual file– automatic indexing tools applied in order to– enable searches through file collection and– facilitate navigation within each file.

[ 7/18 ]Tomáš Pitner et al. ICL Conference, Villach, Austria, Sept 27-29, 2006
The V3 functionality (LMS)– audiovisual files and indexes comply with
public encoding and indexing standards (MPEG, LOM and SCORM)
– are available through the Learning Management System platform of the trainer's organisation
Recording Software
V3 - Framework to Enable Enriched Training Experience
[ 8/18 ]Tomáš Pitner et al. ICL Conference, Villach, Austria, Sept 27-29, 2006
Recording Tool: It must satisfy the needs of:– licensing (free, open-source)– portability (at least all current MS Windows)– readiness (no time for any longer development)– extensibility (enhancements needed)
Recording Software

[ 9/18 ]Tomáš Pitner et al. ICL Conference, Villach, Austria, Sept 27-29, 2006
Recording Tool: The Choices– SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) based solution:
• pros: free, open-source, running on Linux (and Windows?)
• contras: must have been developed from scratch– CamStudio based solution:
• pros: readily available, open-sourced• contras: runs on Windows only
CamStudio won!

CamStudio - The Improvements Needed– User-friendliness (loss-of-signal notification)– More compact output (XviD)– Compatibility issues:
• Windows version (98, Millenium vs. 2000, XP)• various sound interface (Bluetooth HF sets vs.
microphone & sound card)
Indexing
V3 - Framework to Enable Enriched Training Experience
[11/18]Tomáš Pitner et al. ICL Conference, Villach, Austria, Sept 27-29, 2006
Server-side: Upload & Indexing– storage: centralized– indexing: a real problem with proprietary file
formats– gather metadata at:
• file-level• slide/chunk-level
LMS Integration

[12/18]Tomáš Pitner et al. ICL Conference, Villach, Austria, Sept 27-29, 2006
LMS Integration– two sites with centralized content storage
• @ ZMML, University of Bremen, Germany• @ FUNDP, Namur, Belgium
– interfacing with the partners’ learning management systems via web services
