Background

In 1993 the New Mexico Legislature enacted laws to address the serious problem of DWI

- increased the rate of liquor excise tax

- created the Local DWI Grant Program Currently, all 33 counties in NM have an LDWI

Program

New Mexico has contracted with ADE Incorporated, Clarkston, Michigan to:

provide a computerized alcohol and substance abuse assessment and client tracking tool to standardize screening and tracking of DWI offenders for the state of New Mexico

The ADE Screening Instrument The ADE screening instrument is an extension of the

Substance Abuse Life Circumstance Evaluation (SALCE), a standardized alcohol and substance abuse assessment instrument.

This instrument is designed to Provide a standardized, objective and consistent method of

gathering information Provide valid information about all relevant aspects of a

respondent’s life to determine the first level of appropriate intervention

Provide valid direction for conducting the personal interview

Conclusions Demographics of DWI offenders in New Mexico

remain constant between the years-Males are younger than Females when convicted of DWI

Offenders require more than one year for full completion of sanctions

Multiple offenders usually recidivate within same county

Further study needs to examine drinking patterns regarding monthly alcohol use
