Lembit UlfsakAny adjective lesser than “a legend” would be a definitive understatement for the lead actor of the “Tangerines”. After graduating from the Drama School of Estonia in 1970 he has been working as an actor and a director of film and theatre for well over a hundred credits. In 2012 on the celebration of the “100 Years of Estonian Cinema” Lembit Ulfsak was awarded with the Best Male Performer of the Century Award.

BackgroundIn the end of 19th century a small group of Estonians moved to Georgia to settle villages in the countryside. Their com-munity flourished there peacefully until a bloody war broke out in 1992 that changed everything.

SynopsisSet in 1992, during the growing conflict

between Georgia and Abkhazian separatists in the wake of the Soviet Union’s dissolu-tion, this compassionate tale focuses on two Estonian immigrant farmers who decide to remain in Georgia long enough to harvest their tangerine crop. When the war comes to their doorsteps, Ivo (played by legendary Estonian actor Lembit Ulfsak) takes in two wounded soldiers from opposite sides. The fighters vow to kill each other when they re-cover, but their extended period of recovery has a humanizing effect that might tran-scend ethnic divides. Set against a beautiful landscape defiled by war, this poetic film makes an eloquent statement for peace.

Director’s CommentPeople without borders – is the leitmotif of the film.It is unsettling how irresponsible politicians unleash wars that send ordinary people to die. People, who love life and are unique worlds of their own – death of a person is irreversible, but to politicians that is just statistics. And often the cause of a conflict is artificial to begin with.

The film is an attempt to show that even severe enemies can overcome this unnatural opposition and institutionalised slaughter-ing. It is about trust in the human kindness that will eventually prevail, if people are able to forgive, help and protect each other, even from their own people and at the cost of their own lives.

Director’s Comment

People without borders – this is probably the leitmotif of my fi lm.Diff erent nationalities and religious beliefs who oppose each other – enemies become friends.Th ey gradually realise that there is no need to be enemies. Th is movie should show the audience that people around the world are similar, they share common human values. In wars unleashed by irresponsible politicians, ordinary people who love life die. Th e death of one person is the death of a unique world, but for politicians it is just statistics.Borders divide people artifi cially. Th is fi lm should be an attempt to destroy artifi cial boundaries. Heroes who just recently, for some reason, were enemies will tear down these artifi cial borders.Th ey will be able to forgive, help and protect each other, even from their own people and at the cost of their own lives.
