A FARRER - Michigan State...

Venezuelan vocalist/composer Irene Farrera has one of the deepest, sultriest female voices around. Dirty Linen says, " Her deep, dusky appealing vocals are in a register so low that one could be tempted to call her a Latina version of Mahlathini or Barry White." One of a small handful of artists at the forefront of redefining the genre of contemporary nueva trova (also known as nueva canción) in the U.S., Farrera has been called by Latin Beat Magazine "an important discovery." She is a shining star in a new generation of "singer/poets" setting roots in the U.S., whose original work and interpretations are reshaping this important musical form. Bom in Caracas, Venezuela, Farrera grew up singing "fast and loud" and playing cuatro informally within her large, musical family. When the Venezuelan progressive political move- ment Farrera was intensely involved with was crushed in the late '70s, she emigrated to the United States. Ashland, Oregon became her adopted home. Still committed to bearing witness'to injustice, Farrera began composing and singing professionally, first within Oregon and today in venues all across the U.S. Performing both originals and standards in Spanish, Portuguese and English, Farrera's passionate vocals and percussive guitar style have made her one of the most sought-after per- formers in the Pacific Northwest. Her music is rooted in the traditional rhythms and instruments of Latin America but, she is not a purist. Influenced by the joropos and gaitas of Venezuela, and the music of Brazil, Spain, Peru and the Caribbean, Farrera has a distinctive sound that is highly syncopated, mixing "samba, calypso and other styles into a gorgeous Pan-American sound" (The Portland Oregonian). Farrera expands the tradition as a composer writingfiery, romantic love ballads and musically addressing contemporary issues from her unique perspective as a Latina living in the U.S. Farrera imbues her work with the essence of the Latin spirit - a fierce passion combined with romantic tenderness. Farrera has won over all types of audiences ranging from hard-core folkies to Latin music lovers. Recent tours include sold-out shows in Texas and Colorado and standing ovations in California and New Mexico. She has showcased at major fairs and festivals including Bumbershoot and Folklife in Seattle, El Encuentro in San Francisco, Festival at the Lake in Oakland and Wimminfest in Albuquerque. This Fall she will tour the Mid-West and Southwest. Farrera is touring behind her most recent CD, Alma Latina (1995), released by Redwood Records. On this album Farrera pays tribute to significant and well-loved songwriters of Latin America including Silvio Rodriguez, Violeta Parra and Antonio Carlos Jobim. She is accompanied by virtuoso Peruvian guitarist Alfredo Muro and Venezuelan multi-instrumental wizard, Jackeline Rago on cuatro and percussion. The album has received rave reviews by the mainstream and Latin press. Walking in the Jungle (1993), Farrera's self-produced release features original songs, performed with the Tropical Band. Cuts from Alma Latina and Walking in the Jungle are receiving airplay on public, college, AAA and Spanish radio stations throughout North America and are distributed nationally.
