ford White Upon several occasionsMiss Simonton has publicly declaredthat she would fix Thaw and that I

her testimony would have much to dowith sending him to the electric chair

The testimony of Miss Simontonwas very much desired by District At ¬

torney Jerome during the first trialbut the young woman could not befound and was reported to have been-in Africa Nor has she returned with-a blare of newspaper trumpets MissSImonton was Evelyn Nesbits closest I

friend before the marriage of the lat ¬

ter with the Pittsburg millionaire Shewas called to Europe to bring Mrs CJ Holinan Evelyn Thaws mother I

and Thaw were making a merry tourof the continent It is declared thatMiss Simonton is familiar with manyof Thaws escapades and alleged bru ¬

talities and that the story she willhave to tell upon the witness standwill be a spicy one

Martin W Littleton chief counsel-for Thaw scouts the idea that MissSimontons testimony will have anyimportant bearing on the trial anddeclares that her public statement thatshe would fix Thaw is sufficient tocondemn her testimony in advance asbeing inspired by malice It is knownthat detectives for the defense have-of late been engaged in ferreting outMiss Simontons history and it is saidthat they have discovered facts thatwill discredit her as a witness

spire an avenger to slay the devilThe letters abound in statementstending to show that Thaw was amonomaniac on the subject of thewrong doings of White

The letters to Comstock followed-the employment by Thaw of severalprivate detectives to watch StanfordWhite These sleuths reported to himthe allegel revels of White in thestudios Armed with these reportsThaw called upon Anthony Comstock-and attempted to induce the reformer-to use his influence and that of hissociety to put an end to Whites or ¬

gies After several interviews withThaw and the receipt of a number ofletters Comstock decided that the

I young millionaire was of unsound mindand that the charges against Whitewere probably nothing more than un ¬

founded vagaries Comstock referredThaw to the Society for the Preven ¬

tion of Cruelty to Children but thatbody also refused to take up the mat ¬

terTemporary Insanity-

On the morning after Thaw killedWhite the murderer asked that Com ¬

stock visit him Comstock complied-with the request and called upon Thaw-at his cell in the Tombs As a result-of this interview it is said Comstock-was further convinced that Thaw wassuffering from temporary insanity

While Attorney Littleton refuses tosay positively that Evelyn Thaw willbe called to the stand it is definitelyknown that the defense now contem-plates
