I. Introduction

Between the 10th and 15th March, 2013, the 3rd Comenius School Partnerships

Project meeting was held at Oasis Academy: Lords Hill, in Southampton, the UK.

The aims of the meeting were:

- introduce the project partners to Oasis Academy: Lord’s Hill; - organise homework presentations; - organise black and white photography workshop; - organise a trip to Oxford; - organise story writing workshops.

II. The receiving organisation

Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill replaced Millbrook Community School and Oaklands

Community School which both closed in August 2008. The Academy opened in

September 2008 in the existing buildings on the two sites of the predecessor

schools.

From September 2012 the Academy transferred across to a purpose-built and iconic

new building on the ‘5 acre field’ site.

The Academy is sponsored by Oasis Community Learning, which is separate charity,

but is part of the Oasis global family.

The Academy initially caters for approx. 950 students in the 11-16 age range. All

places at the Academy are free and available to the local community within an

admissions policy that mirrors the inclusive admissions arrangements for community

schools in Southampton.

The specialist focus of the Academy is Arts that builds on the augments the existing

strengths of the predecessor schools and continues to develop its links to the wider

community. With a focus on lifelong learning, each student’s education is a careful

and personalised balance between practical training and academic education. As an

independent school, we employ innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

The Academy’s goal is to create an environment where students ‘want’ to learn

rather than ‘have’ to learn. State of the art computing facilities provide an essential

tool to enhance teaching in the classroom and facilitates independent learning whilst

the Academy’s study areas provide students with further autonomy in their learning.

V. Project activities

On Sunday, the 10th March all the project participants arrived in Southampton. Students were taken to host families, teachers were taken to the Holiday Inn hotel. On Monday, the 11th March all the participants arrived at the Academy where the opening of the 3rd project meeting took place. Teachers and students were given a guided tour round the Academy’s new building. The tour was led by vice principal Paul Gaston and student members from Oasis student council. All the participants were welcomed by the principal Ian Golding. The principal introduced Oasis family and the Academy to the guests. Host students showed their play-quiz. A professional photographer and designer Chris Webb ran a short seminar on black and white photography. After lunch students and teachers were shown the old city of Southampton, led by Teresa Monks. On Tuesday, the 12th March all the project participants had a day out in Oxford where they visited Brasenose College and other university buildings. After lunch in High Street students and teachers visited Pitt Rivers Museum. The aim of the trip was to take photographs for the story. In the evening back in the Academy the visitors watched the play ‘Punch for Judy’ performed by Oasis Youth Theatre. The play was written by Oasis Academy Theatre Director Mark Wheeler and was based on a real story. The Academy drama group is the best among youth drama groups in England. On Wednesday, the 13 March students and teachers worked in workshops either writing the story or working on the photographs for the story. In the evening, teachers had an opportunity to watch a Theatre performance. On Thursday, the 14th March students and teachers worked in workshops finishing the story. The group that was working on a photo diary presented their work. After lunch Oasis Business Director Kate Bulpit closed the meeting and issued the certificates for the project participants. In the evening students and teachers gathered at the New Forest pub for a farewell dinner. Friday, the 15th March – the departure day.

VII. Conclusion

The 3rd project meeting held in Southampton on the 10th-15th March, 2013 was successful and can be evaluated as good. The highlights of the meeting were a visit to Oxford and the performance shown by Oasis Youth Theatre. The staff hospitality, location, transport and ability to solve problems were the strengths highlighted by students and teachers. Students did a great job creating the third chapter. They started with an impressive brainstorming and story development. Towards the end teachers had to contribute more than it was expected in order the chapter to be completed. The English Team
