The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime, as setting lifetime goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making. To give a broad, balanced coverage to all important areas in your life, endeavour to set goals in all of the following:

Artistic

Do you want to learn an instrument? Participate in a play? See the Mona Lisa? If so, how can you make that happen?

AttitudeIs any part of your mindset holding you back? Are there any particular behaviors or habits that are upsetting to you and would like to change? Do you need any outside support to assist you in these changes?

CareerWhat level do you want to reach in your career? How much education will you need?

For each dot on the wheel below, consider the amount you feel fulfilled in that area. Draw your own dot in between the center of the wheel and the other dot to represent the amount you feel fulfilled in that area, with the center of the wheel representing 0% and the outside edge representing 100%.

For example, if you felt 100% fulfilled in all areas, your “pie” would extend to the outside edges and you’d have a full circle. You will connect each of your dots to a shape. Most likely you will have more of a starburst shape. Feel free to change any headings to more appropriately reflect aspects of life you care about.

EXPAND YOUR IDEAS

A way of creating your list of goals is to brainstorm ideas. While you are doing this, consider what you would do if you had no limitations. For example, what if money and health were not obstacles for you? Think about people you admire — what qualities do they have, how do they act? What qualities would you like to emulate? Pick four of the above categories and brainstorm goal ideas.

Ensure to cover the following categories:

• What you want to BE• What you want to DO• What you want to GIVE• What you want to HAVE• What you want to LEARN

This exercise is designed to help you set goals – “an ideal future” – and plan activities and strategies for meeting those goals. As you do this exercise, it is important to consider that your goals are not “set in stone”, they may change and that is expected. The important step is to begin the planning process and dream.

1. State your Goal. It must be specific, challenging and attainable.

2. List all the reasons why you want to achieve this goal. What will be the benefits?

3. List all obstacles between you and your Goal. Why have you not achieved it yet?

FUTURE AN IDEAL

Page 13: A dream BECOMES A action GOAL WORKBOOK · life possible; you must set effective goals for yourself. Effective goals are the biggest difference between a life spent daydreaming and

4. What information or skill do you need to achieve the Goal?

5. Who can help me to achieve this Goal?

6. What steps can you take?

7. Name the primary three first steps you can take.

8. How committed are you toward reaching this Goal?

Not at all Sort Of Moderately Significantly Motivated Highly Motivated

9. When you are 80 years old, what do you want to look back on and know you put your all into? What would make you be able to say “I had a good life”?

10. What is one simple thing you can do right now, today, to move toward the Goal? Do it!

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in

your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain
