SEOSearch Engine Optimisation

The practice of optimising a website and online presence to make a brand more easily found, ideally increasing sales

SERPSearch Engine Results Page

The position your website appears on Google, ie position #5 on page 1

WMT Webmaster Tools

A free Google tool that allows you to see what Google thinks of your site; whether there are penalties, how many pages it can see and

who is linking to you - you can also submit a sitemap here and request removal of any penalties too

GA Google Analytics

A free Google tool that allows you to see who is visiting your site, where they came from, how long they stayed on for and which pages

they visited…everything you can possibly imagine, this is the ultimate tracking tool

Meta Data Meta DataThis is the title and description that shows up when you see a site on

Google; the small snippet of information that you read before you click to get taken to the site

Bounce Rate NAThis is when someone visits a page on your website then clicks their

back button, ie they don't travel to other pages

Ping Back NAWhen someone lands on a page of your website then immediately

leaves again, staying on for perhaps less than 1 second and not engaging at all

Channel NAThe way people find your website, ie the channel is Facebook, or

Google or a third party website as that is the path users find you by

White Hat NAThe process of optimising a website that is all above board and in

accordance with Google's guidelines

Black Hat NAThe process of optimising a website that is NOT all above board and in

accordance with Google's guidelines!

Negative SEONegative Search

Engine OptimisationWhen someone performs blackhat SEO on your website to reduce its

ranking thus increasing their own or that of a competitor unfairly

Algorithm NAA set of instructions followed by a computer (or Google!) in problem

solving situations, very complex stuff so I'll leave it there…

Local SEOLocal Search Engine

Optimisation

Optimising a website so it shows up high in the SERPs for your local area, ie optimising a website for the London area so it shows up high

for searches with the word London in them

UI User InterfaceHow your website looks and how easy it is to navigate around, the

usability factor

UV Unique VisitorIf someone visits your website more than once, the unique visitor

count will only count them once; the number of people that visit your site, not the number of times they visit

SoLoMo Social, Local, MobileThe practice of combining these three disciplines to achieve your

marketing goals

Type of Algorithm

This was an algorithm implemented by Google that allowed Google to understand the relationship between

two words ie the sentiment of the word "best" when someone types in "best restaurant", "apple iPhone" meaning Apple the company and not the fruit etc

Google Panda Type of Algorithm

This Google algorithm let Google know what websites were trying to unfairly climb the ranks of Google by

publishing lots and lots of the same content - it could then penalise them appropriately

Google Penguin Type of Algorithm

This Google algorithm let Google know what websites were trying to unfairly climb the ranks of Google by

putting links to their website on other cheap websites, it could then penalise them appropriately

Google CaffeineChange to Indexing from

Google

Caffeine was released by Google and was an update that revamped the way they indexed web pages to make them

faster to return search results

Google Venice Type of AlgorithmThis Google algorithm helped Google to return local

searches, more accurately ie if you're in London it would return results relevant to London

FF Follow FridayThe practice of mentioning other peoples Twitter names in a tweet along with

the hashtag #FF to increase followers and recommend followers for others

Latergram NAUsed on Instagram, when you upload a photo to Instagram some time after you

Influencer NASomeone who is influential within a certain space, ie a fashion influencer would

At Mention NAUsing the @ symbol to send out a tweet to someone; putting this before their username means they receive that tweet directly via a notification, it is a way

of communicating with people publicly on Twitter

Remarketing Remarketing

The practice of capturing someone who has previously clicked on your ad but not converted and advertising to them on another platform or in another way, reason being they have shown previous interested so could be more likely to

convert

Ad Group NAWithin a PPC campaign, you subdivide the keywords/areas you want to target -

each sub division is called an Ad Group.Ad Advert The ad you create to display on Google.

Ad Extension Advert ExtensionWhen you display your ad on Google, there is the option to display other

information such as your testimonials page, a review or your phone number - each of these is called an ad extension

Conversion NAWhatever you want it to be! A conversion may be a lead, a click, a visit to a

certain page or the submission of an online contact form

CR Conversion RateThe rate at which your advert/campaign/adgroup converts - ie if two people

visit my site and 1 of them converts my conversion rate is 50%

Campaign NAThe umbrella term for all your PPC activity, your adgroups, ads, sitelinks are

all components of your overall campaign

CTRClick Through

RateThe ratio of people that see your ad vs. the ratio of people that click on it, if

10 people see it and 1 person clicks, your click through rate will be 10%CPV Cost Per Visitor How much money it costs to get a visitor to your website

QS Quality ScoreIf you create an ad, this is the relevance of the page that your ad links to - so if I create an ad for a food shop but the page I link it to is about teddy bears…

my quality score will be low

Impression NAAn ad might be seen a thousand times before one person clicks on it -

therefore that ad has had 1,000 impressions
