PREFACE.The present work is issued by the C. L. S., primarily to meet

its own needs. We grew tired of waiting for action on the partof others. The Chinese Government has been often said to bedoing something in this line, but the Education Board has so farfailed to supply the need. The Japanese terms are being veryextensively adopted, and accordingly we went to the great Japa-nese work "5" ^ ~fc i^ iHf and copied out the terms that aretherein described at length.

YW, of course, do not endorse all these terms as even goodbut they are coining in like a flood. They are in the field andwe should know them. All who deal with students as well astranslators will find a knowledge of at least the principal termsindispensable. The total number of entries is about 2,482.

Dr. G. A. Stuart's work published by the EducationalAssociation of China in 1910, as well a's Dr. Cousland's Diction-ary of Medical Terms are excellent but wholly different. Thiswork is tentative and imperfect, but it is hoped that improvementcan be effected in the next edition.

    D. MAcGlLLIVRAY.
